GHSOSHA’s Take:“Revising OSHA's Hazard Communication standard will improve the quality and consistency of hazard information, making it safer for workers to do their jobs and easier for employers to stay competitive”
Hilda Solis, US Secretary of Labor
GHSWhat’s Changing?
MSDS sheets redesigned as Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
GHS standardizes the content and formatting of SDS's into a strict 16 Part Document with a set order
1. SDS
GHSLabel ratings are now inverted to ease confusion
- Current NFPA or HMIS systems have “4” as worst and “1” as best
- With GHS, “category 1” is the worst
2. Classifications
What’s Changing?
GHSWhat’s Changing?
Two signal words in GHS used to communicate the level of hazard on label and SDS: danger and warning
Standardized GHS pictograms developed
3. Labels
GHSWhat’s Changing?
Long, inconsistent, dense labels inhibit maximum transmission of critical infoHigh risk involved with different systems of hazard classification and labeling
Clarity/Simplicity/Consistency=Effective Communication of Information=
Improved Protection
