2016 -2017 FALL ISSUE GFWC OREGON FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS FROM YOUR PRESIDENT MARY ACCETTURA_______________________________ GFWC OREGON President – Mary Accettura 1 st Vice President – Karen LaVoie 2 nd Vice President – Laurel Jones Treasurer – Pam Briggs Recording Secretary – Glenda Peters Greetings, As we start a new administration, our thoughts and hopes turn to thoughts of new projects, programs and new ideas. I look forward to working with all of the many talented and energetic women in the OFWC. I have chosen the “Heart” as my administration theme and I have chosen the phrase, from our Collect by Mary Stewart, “THE GREAT HUMAN HEART OF US ALL”. The heart is the primary organ in the body, the seat of emotion, the central, inner part of anything. As I see it, all members are the heart of the GFWC, OFWC and individual clubs. As the heart pumps oxygen and blood thru the human body, we, as club members, pump our talents, time, ideas and generosity thru the club body. For my President’s project I have chosen “LITERACY”. Libraries have always played an important part in my life. Since the GFWC was instrumental in the establishment of over 75% of our nation’s libraries and the OFWC was responsible for the establishment of public libraries in our State, I feel that my project will be beneficial to all of us. I urge all the clubs in the State to, once again, establish a working relationship with the library in their community. I look forward to the next two years as your President and I hope I can live up to your expectations. Please invite me to visit your club, I am at your “beck & call”. Visiting the clubs in this State is a great joy and pleasure for me. Thank you. The Executive Committee will Growth Through Service Organized October 24, 1899

GFWC OREGON President – Mary Accettura1st Vice President – Karen LaVoie2nd Vice President – Laurel JonesTreasurer – Pam BriggsRecording Secretary – Glenda Peters

Greetings,As we start a new administration, our thoughts and hopes turn to thoughts of new projects, programs and new ideas.

Thank you.

In the City of Mill City, Or last year, the city library was burned to the ground. This library was the pride of the Mill City Womans’ Club. They will be re-establishing the library through the generous gift of a donated site. I am asking all club members to help them build their collection. They are asking for books that are published from 2000 to date. Their main genre is fiction: Adult, Young Adult & Children. The books will be collected at the State Board of Directors’ meeting on October 8, 2016. Please be generous with your donations. Books may be new or used. Club Presidents, please bring the donated books with you, I will see that they are delivered to Mill City.

State ChairmenPlease visit the GFWC webs site and print the information on your individual program. There is a wealth of usable information and ideas. Also, note the program partners for each program. A suggestion was made at the GFWC Board of Directors’ meeting. If each State chairman would seek out the program partners FACEBOOK listing, click on the “Like” word, all info for that program partner will be sent to you. A great way to keep in touch with the new ideas in your area.

I encourage all members to sign up for the GFWC CLUBWOMAN MAGAZINE, this is an excellent publication. The information and the articles are well worth the $10.00 a year subscription. Also, sign up for the electronically sent GFWC NEWS AND NOTES. This e-mail is sent to you each Thursday, again, the information will keep you connected to GFWC and all the other clubs throughout the U.S.A. Last, but not least, is the Legislative Action area. Again visit the GFWC website, there is a link for you to sign up. You will also include the names of your two Congressional Senators and your Congressional Representative. Every time there is a vote coming up in Congress, that is pertinent to our GFWC goals, you will be notified and asked to include your position about said vote. If you agree with the GFWC position, you will click on the submit button, if you do not agree, refrain from submitting. Your submit opinion will be sent to your Congressional Senators and Congressional Representative. When I have submitted my opinion in the past, I have received a thank you from these Congress men. There was discussion about furthering this program to all the State Legislatures. The GFWC Public Affairs committee is looking into this possibility. I will keep you informed about their progress.

Think what could happen if we had 50 families participating!

If you have not already done so, please link your rewards card to OFWC through Fred Meyers Community Rewards program following the attached instruction sheet. Be sure to ask at your club meetings how many members are participating in this fundraiser!

**If you linked your rewards card to OFWC before June 2016, you MUST re-link your card in order to continue to have OFWC receive credit for your purchases.

WASHINGTON WORKSHOP: We have been invited by the 2016-2018 GFWC Washington Board to attend their Fall Conference (See page 5 for the call). In the morning of this meeting they are going to present a LEADERSHIP SEMINAR. Speakers at this seminar will be: Karlene Garner – Past GFWC International President Nancy Jones – GFWC Public Issues Chairman Chyrle Holman – GFWC Legislation Committee Member

I am positive that you will not want to miss this seminar. Because of the speakers, I know that it will be informative and inspiring. Please make an effort to attend. If you do not plan to attend the luncheon, please indicate on the call you will send in, there is no charge for the seminar. Let us thank our neighbors to the North of us, that we appreciate their generosity and attend this great event.************************************************************************************************************************A note from the Beaverton Woman’s Club:

This summer has been a very busy time for the Beaverton Woman’s Club. We participated, for the first time, in the Beaverton National Night Out campaign-4 members were at the event to meet and greet the public as well as thank our Beaverton Police Dept. for their service to our community. We assembled 55 goody bags to give to attending officers and first responders. This was an idea we found on the GFWC app done by a Louisiana area club. BWC set up a membership table and garnered 14 new names of prospective members interested in possibly joining our club.

On August 25, BWC members hosted our annual Membership Dessert Social in the Beaverton Community Center. Of the 69 invitees, 15 attended to hear and talk about how we Live the Volunteer Spirit in Beaverton. Our invitees were women who have showed interest over the past 4 months at the Girlfriends Tea, The Pinwheels for Prevention Display and the National Night Out events.

Summer fun from the Oregon City Woman’s Club

Needless to say our summer was not one of relaxation. We started the season with a booth at our First City Celebration. We distributed flyers, brochures and information on our club and its activities. We are happy to say that three perspective members are interested in

joining and will be attending their first meeting in September.

At our National Night Out booth we again distributed information but we also contributed to the Oregon City Police Dep. Raffle by donating gift cards.

The two day Festival of the Arts was a fundraiser for us. We sold bottled water which was greatly appreciated because that weekend was one of the hottest of the summer. Of course we attracted interest in the club. We also received 19 donation from various local artists for our annual auction which will be held: SUNDAY – OCTOBER 30, 2016 AINSWORTH HOUSE AND GARDENS 19130 Lot Whitcomb Dr. Oregon City, Oregon Hours 1-4pmFor more information, please call Jeri Adams 503-866-7367. We look forward to seeing you.

Welcome to Valley District Voice

This year as your Valley District President I choose to have my theme as Communication with Heart which keeps with our Oregon State President’s Theme. This newsletter will be available for clubs in Valley District to highlight what the Club is doing in their Community as well as being able to give us your calendar of events.

Also, Wendy Wheeler-Jacobs will be serving as our editor and the first edition is for you to share with your community. We are asking that each club assign someone as your editor so that Wendy will have someone in the Club to contact for articles.

This is your newsletter and we hope to share with the State and the GFWC Clubs throughout the U. S. what Valley District is doing.

We also will be highlighting a club member each edition. I will be contacting your club and asking for your help in getting this accomplished. So please if I contact your club and ask for your help in getting this club member interviewed please share their information with me. New members as well as our outstanding long term members will be highlighted and the questions that you see in the Club Woman article will be the same for all members.

Page 8 Remember this is your newsletter and you can send articles, photos of your projects or just what your club is doing. We wish each club your best and hope that you will take this opportunity to shine and share.

Communication between clubs is valuable and what your club is doing may be used by another club or we can support each other’s clubs by participating in your projects or your

I hope that you enjoy the newsletter and what will be going on in the next two years.

GFWC Oregon’s GOLDEN KEYThe tradition of giving a Golden Key (our modern lingo shortens it to Gold Key) was begun in 1974. To date, as far as records indicate, 318 Clubwomen, family or friends have received a Golden Key.Yes…This award may honor not only clubwomen, but family and friends with a “Gold Key” specified donation of $50.00 to the OFWC Endowment Fund. Clubwomen honorees are often those members who are the “behind the scenes” volunteers. She is not necessarily the Club President but one who makes a quiet difference in the success of the Club or… she can be the Club “mover and shaker.” Mrs. Kenneth (Patti) Myren of Silverton Junior Women’s Club was the first Gold Key recipient. Linette Little (1987) of Albany Woman’s Club (Lebanon Zenith) received the 100th Key; Glenda Peters (1994) of Beaverton Woman’s Club (200th) and Jamie Rockwell (2007) of Independence-Polk County Woman’s Club (300 th). The most recent honorees at the 2016 OFWC Convention were Mary Accetura (Portland Woman’s Club) and Penny Rich (Beaverton Woman’s Club). To make a gift of a Golden Key or for more information, contact:Valerie Huey, Endowment Fund Chairman at [email protected] NE 232nd St. Battle Ground, WA 98604*********************************************************************************************NOTES FROM THE GFWC BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING

There is the possibility that a new program partner will be assigned to the ART PROGRAM. That program partner is based here in Portland, Or and they are the DREAMING ZEBRA FOUNDATION. We will be notified when all the final arrangements have been made. National Arts Week is September 11-17.

The Junior Special Project for the 2016-2018 administration is: ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN. The week of October 23, 2016 is Advocates week.

Western Region States Conference is September 15-18, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. A new WSR pin and a WSR badge will be available. If you would like one, contact a member of the executive committee. The cost is $5.00 per pin and/or badge.

Be on the alert for a new e-mail scam – SPEAR FISHINGThis is geared to non-profit organizations. Normally the treasurer of the organization is contacted and the caller states that he or she has spoken to the organization president and that president has given their permission to forward money to the caller, normally it is a small amount so no “alarm bells” are sounded. This is a SCAM, DO NOT FALL FOR IT. Always call the president of your organization to get verification. Page 9

Last but not least, I would be remiss if I did not mention about the awards we received at the GFWC 2016 Convention in Baltimore, Maryland at the end of June.

The states are divided into 6 categories according to club membership. We are in category 6, states with fewer than 399 members. The states in this category are: New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Vermont, Alaska, South Dakota, Utah, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Idaho, Hawaii and Washington D.C., and Oregon.

We received OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT In HOME LIFE. We also received OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT In EDUCATION.My thanks go to Wilma Shepherd of the Mill City Woman’s Club, 2014-2016 OFWC Home Life Chairman and to Allison Belisle of the Beaverton Woman’s Club, 2014-2016 OFWC Education Chairman. Without your energetic and enthusiastic support of your respective programs, OFWC would not have received these awards. We also received a CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION from HOBY. Thanks to those clubs who reported their participation in this program partner.

In the coming months I hope to reach out to, you our members, in more newsletters. I would like to highlight club Presidents and also any information the individual clubs would like to share with the membership. I agree with Heather Thomas, Valley District President, communication is a vital part of this organization, it will keep us going forward with enthusiasm and purpose.
