POST SHOW REPORTThe world’s most influential event for sustainable agriculture

Innovation in agriculture gives us a real chance of feeding nine billion people using fewer resources and with no environmental damage.

It has the potential to offer solutions to combat global warming, provide technologies that can improve nutrition and social prosperity in

developing countries, be an unlimited source of clean energy, and help us look after our most precious resource: water.

Launched in February 2014, the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture (GFIA) achieved international acclaim for being the largest

showcase of innovations for sustainable agriculture the world had ever seen.

Building on the success of the first edition, GFIA 2015 leveraged partnerships with over 40 powerful international organisations to make

GFIA the world’s most influential event for the future of food production.

“I was spending my days as a GFIA delegate with a group of mostly European, Middle Eastern and African leaders vastly more action oriented than any I had seen in my seven years as a participant at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. While Davos was always about projecting the identity of “importance” simply by virtue of ones attendance - GFIA in Abu Dhabi was laser focused on the foundations of global security in its truest sense.”

THE innOvATiOnS

Introducing three game-changers:

INNovATIoN: SALT FARM TExEL

organisation: Salt Farm Texel, The Netherlands

At the research location of Salt Farm Texel, a salt tolerant variety of potato has been identified that is four times higher than previously believed to be possible. With over one billion hectares of salinised soil worldwide, and rising, the potential to increase agricultural production on previously non-cultivated land is enormous.

INNovATIoN: PRoTIx

organisation: Protix Biosystems, The Netherlands

Insects play a pivotal role in the nutrient cycle by converting low quality degrading material into high quality living biomass. Protix has developed large scale production technologies that enable the extraction of high-quality proteins and lipids from organic waste. This makes Protix the first company worldwide to cultivate insects efficiently, ensuring organic waste as a new source of feed for future generations.

INNovATIoN: PLANET LABS

organisation: Planet Labs, UK

Fresh data from any place on Earth is foundational to solving commercial, environmental, and humanitarian challenges. Satellite imaging has revolutionised our knowledge of the Earth, but Planet Labs can do better and go faster — by getting smaller. It produces tiny satellites that, when launched in a cluster, provide high-res images of the entire planet. Its global sensing and analytics platform unlocks the ability to understand and respond to change at a local and global scale.

Across four theatres, 100 speakers had just 15 minutes to show an audience of food producers, technology buyers and investors how

their innovation can improve productivity and why it could shape the future of sustainable farming around the world.

“Your work to promote sustainability and resource conservation through what I hope will be genuinely appropriate technology and innovation could not be more important.”

HRH The Prince of Wales, speaking at GFIA 2015
