long been the message from local businessowners Irsquom a bit biased being the owner of My

Community Pharmacy but like millions of Amer-icans I could have just as easily worked for Cor-porate America My wife could have continued towork for CVS and we could have continued get-ting our medications filled at the huge conglom-erate Instead we decided to take a risk and starta small pharmacy back in 2008 We went all-inwith our familyrsquos savings got loans from the fam-ily that believed in our vision and maxed out over$100K on our credit cards to start a locallyowned independent pharmacy That soundscrazy and very risky to some but we aimed toserve the public and give them an option to thechains With that said I donrsquot understand whysome people donrsquot support their local economyLike many other business owners about 75cents of every dollar made is spent and recircu-lated here in our own community On the otherhand CVS sends 75 cents of every dollar theymake out of the state Same is true for Wal-

greens We (local business owners and employ-ees) buy from our neighbors and support otherlocal businesses which also keeps a greater per-centage of our tax dollars here Corporate prof-its usually get dispersed all over the world toshare-holders and corporate management Localbusiness owners typically live in the communitiesin which they work and to some extent are ac-tive in their communities We care about what isgoing on in our town We sit on boards and foun-dations for charities in our community Locallyowned businesses also employ the citizens of thetowns they serve again increasing spending inthat very same community and tax revenueMembers of my staff on average make 20more than they would at a CVS or a WalgreensIn addition a big chain would not hesitate toclose their doors in a neighborhood they donrsquotdeem profitable whereas with independents weput the needs of our community first I wouldnever move my store to Palm Beach Island just tosell the same medication for three times theamount like the business model of the chains
