Note: Only 64 bit systems are supported. You must have either one of the above patches installed before proceeding with this ASE installation

Microsof t Wind ows System requirements for ASE 15.7 ESD#2:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package and KB2565063 or

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 and KB2565057

Task

The installer creates the target directory (if it does not yet exists) and installs the selected components into thatdirectory.

Note: Adaptive Server Enterprise 15.7 ESD #2 includes new major versions of Adaptive Server and many supportingcomponents. Installing Adaptive Server version 15.7ESD#2 into the same directory with existing products should not

impact the existing products. However, installing other products on top of Adaptive Server version 15.7 ESD #2 mayresult in one or more products not working correctly.

Sybase strongly recommends that you install Adaptive Server version 15.7 ESD #2 into its own directory if possible. Ifyou must install other products into the same directory, install Adaptive Server version 15.7 ESD #2 last.Adaptive Server version 15.5 and later uses InstallAnywhere for its installation, while versions of Adaptive Serverearlier than 15.5 and other Sybase products use InstallShield Multiplatform. Do not use both installers to install

products into the same directory, as this creates files to be installed incorrectly and overwritten without warning.

Sybase recommends installing products as a system administrator; however, root permissions are not required to run theinstaller. The installer creates the target directory (if necessary) and installs the selected components into that directory. At the end of the installation, you can verify the product installation. You may need to perform additional configuration

procedures before you can use some products.

At the end of the installation, you can verify the product installation. You may need to perform additional configuration procedures before using some products.

If you downloaded the product from SPDC or SAP Service Marketplace, go to the directory where you extracted theinstallation image and start the installer:

./setup.exe

  Select the language.

On the Introduction screen, click Next.

Accept the default directory or enter a new path, then click Next.

Select the type of installation: Typical | Full | Customizeo Typical: (Defaults) Installs the default components. This is recommended for most userso Full: Installs every Adaptive Server component, including all the supported language moduleso Customize: Lets you select the components to install. Some components are automatically installed if they

are required to run selected components.

Select Free Developer Edition of Adaptive Server Suite  software license type for the Adaptive Server suite:

Choose the most appropriate region, read the license terms, then click I agree. Click Next.

After installation, following screen will come to configure New Adaptive Server –  Make sure that “create sample

databases” option is selected. If you chose a typical installation, the installer asks you following options , in screentypical of above.

STARTING AND STOPPING ADAPTIVE SERVER

Follow the instructions in the sections below to start Adaptive Server using Sybase Control Center or from thecommand line.

Start and Stop Servers Using the Control PanelYou can start, stop, and pause a server both automatically and manually from the Services applet in the Control Panel.

Note: If you are running Adaptive Server and the Windows Process Viewer, and Adaptive Server is listed in theProcess Viewer, you may not be able to restart Adaptive Server after you shut it down. This is because theProcessViewer holds some Registry resources, even after the viewed process is closed. Shut down the Process Viewer

 before you restart Adaptive Server.

Setting Up Adaptive Server as an Automatic Service

Use the Control Panel to set up the server as an automatic service.1. In Windows Services at Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools >Services .2. Scroll through the list of available services until you find the listings for your Sybaseservers.

Server names use this format:

Sybase typeServer _ servername_suffix where servername is the name of the Adaptive Server and type and _ suffixrepresent the server type:

  SQL –  Adaptive Server

BCK and _BS –  Backup Server

XP and _XP –  XP Server

Double-click Adaptive Server, or right-click Adaptive Server service entry and select Properties.

Select Automatic as the start-up type.

5. Click Close. The selected server now starts automatically each time you restart the computer. You canverify the status of the server by examining the status column in the Services applet.See your Windows documentation or online help for more information about setting upautomatic services

Server Start-up ParametersAdaptive Server and Backup Server store their default start-up parameters in the Windows Registry file. This allowsyou to start and manage servers as Windows services, and allows servers to start automatically when you start yourcomputer. The default start-up parameters are stored under the Registry key

\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SYBASE\Server\ server_name\Parameters, where server_name is thename of the server you installed. Backup Server server names are appended with “_BS”.

Note: You can install multiple servers, each with its own Registry key.

Start-up parameters are listed under Registry values named Argn, wheren is a number from 0 to 8. The number of theargument indicates the order in which the server reads the parameter.

Upon start-up, Adaptive Server begins to write information to a local error log file: %SYBASE%\%SYBASE_ASE%\install\errorlog.

This file:

• Stores information about the success or failure of each start -up attempt• Logs error and informational messages generated by the server during its operations• Remains open until you stop the server process  • Retains its contents until you rename, move, or empty the file

If this file becomes too large, you can:• Use sp_errorlog to dynamically change its path. Once the older error log is not being used by Adaptive Server, youcan move it, and make space available.• Stop the Adaptive Server and delete logged messages.

Logging to the Adaptive Server error log is always enabled. However, when you create or modify a specific user-defined message, you can set it to be omitted from the log.

Adaptive Server error log stores:• Start-up messages from Adaptive Server• Backtraces and stack traces from Adaptive Server  • Fatal error messages (severity level 19 and higher)  • Kernel error messages• Informational messages

Adaptive Server Default Configuration Parameters

Installing or updating Adaptive Server automatically sets some default parameters and settings, and includes severalauxiliary programs. After installing and testing this “default” Adaptive Server, you must configure it to your  system’s

needs and install other optional features. Many of Adaptive Server settings are determined by the configuration file, which is located in %SYBASE%, and set with the sp_configure system procedure.

STOPPING ADAPTIVE SERVER

Only the system administrator can issue a shutdown command. Using a shutdown command minimizes the amount ofwork that automatic recovery needs to do when the servers are restarted. The preferred method of stopping AdaptiveServer is to use the Transact-SQLshutdown command.

1. Log in to an Adaptive Server account with System Administrator privileges:isql -Usa -P password -S server_name

2. Enter:1> shutdown2> go

The default for the shutdown command is with wait. The with wait option allows Adaptive Server to finish executingSQL statements or procedures, perform a checkpoint in each database, disable new logins, and perform other shutdowntasks.

A message similar to this prints to the stderr file:Server SHUTDOWN by request. The SQL Server is terminating this process.CT-LIBRARY error:

This is normal behavior.

If the message indicates that Adaptive Server is waiting for processes to complete, and you must stop Adaptive Serverimmediately, you can use the shutdown with nowait command.

shutdown with nowait does not wait for currently executing statements to finish, nor does it perform checkpoints in

every database. Use the shutdown with nowait command only when necessary.

CONNECTING TO ADAPTIVE SERVER WITH ISQL

isql sends Transact-SQL commands to Adaptive Server, formatting the results and printing them to standard output. There is no maximum size for an isql statement. For more information about using Transact-SQL, see the Transact-SQLUser’s Guide.

To log into Adaptive Server using isql:1. Open an MS-DOS Command Prompt window

2. Start isql and connect to Adaptive Server:%SYBASE%\%SYBASE_OCS%\bin\isql -Usa -P pass_word -S server_name

where:

• %SYBASE% –  is the Sybase installation directory.

• server_name –  is the name of your Adaptive Server.Adaptive Server displays the isql prompt:1>
