• Recycling and reuse programs can reduce that cost.

• You can save money by conducting a waste audit.

• You can save money by using salvaged or once used materials.

What is Green or Environmentally Preferable Purchasing?

The EPA defines

environmentally preferable as…

…products or services that have a lesser or

reduced effect on human health and the

environment when compared with competing

products or services that serve the same

purpose.

This comparison applies to raw materials,

manufacturing, packaging, distribution, use,

reuse, operation, maintenance, and disposal.

Page 15: Getting started in sustainability webinar (08 15 11)

Why is Green Purchasing Important?

• What comes in must go out - almost everything that ends up in the garbage probably came into the office through purchasing – the connection between purchasing and waste disposal becomes important

• Certain products actually cost us more than just the initial purchase price- utility costs, maintenance, and end of life disposal

• What we purchase sends a message to our customers and our suppliers

Opportunities to Save with Green PurchasingReduce your energy bills by purchasing Energy Star office

equipment

Reduce your fuel use by choosing energy efficient and hybrid vehicles

Reduce your paper (and waste) costs by requiring duplexing

Reduce the initial cost of new products by purchasing remanufactured products

Reduce the initial cost and waste disposal fees by buying in bulk to reduce packaging

Page 18: Getting started in sustainability webinar (08 15 11)

Sustainability Planning• Increasingly seen as a requirement for vendors

and contractors- sends the right message to your clients

• Opportunity to consolidate company-wide efforts into one document

• Increases efficiency and saves money

• Includes: Policy development Goal Setting

360 degree view of activities Process and results oriented

Sustainability Planning

Impact Area Current Baseline Objective Strategies Department Progress Completed/Implemented 1.12 Begin Recycling - Rags Rags used to clean drums

after leak testing are used once and discarded wet. Monthly rag purchase cost is $2,000 to $3,000 ($0.75 per rag) Monthly rag disposal tons are xx tons and disposal cost is $xxx

Re-use rags and reduce average monthly rag cost (purchase cost + disposal cost ) by 80% Reduce monthly tons of rags sent to landfill by 80%.

1. Purchase industrial grade washing machine and dryer to clean used rags. Use rags for as many weeks as possible before replacement. Document average monthly rag cost (purchase and disposal).

2. Document number of wash loads run per day/month to calculate water and energy usage and cost per month. Add wash cost to average monthly rag cost and compare to monthly rag cost when not reusing rags to compute % cost reduction.Compare average monthly disposal tons to monthly disposal tons prior to re-use to calculate reduction in monthly tons of rags landfilled.

3. Identify a recycler for rags and begin recycling.
