Getting into ResearchPCH General Meeting
Why do research? Why is it important?
•Fun!
•Avenue to practice what you learned in class
•Way to personalize your education
•Contribute to society
•Work closely with faculty and the BEST scientists in the field
What is research? What are your perceptions of
research?
Different types of research
Biological Sciences:● Basic science● Translational● Clinical
Special categories: Psychology, Humanities, Public Health, and more!
Basic Science
● Study of fundamental mechanisms
● The core and foundation of biology and other sciences
Translational Research
● Bridging “bench to bedside”
● Development of novel therapies
● Making a clinical impact using scientific research
Clinical Research
● Patient care research
● Provider-patient interaction
● Application of therapeutics
Activity!
We’re going to discuss REAL labs and research areas at UCLA. Tell us if it falls
under basic science, translational or clinical research!
Dr. Antoni RibasDr. Antoni Ribas is a physician-scientist conducting laboratory and clinical research focused in malignant melanoma. His research includes:• laboratory research in adoptive cell transfer therapy with T-cell receptor (TCR) engineered lymphocytes• understanding the antitumor activity of CTLA4-blocking antibodies• molecular imaging and advanced immune monitoring for the study of tumor immunotherapy• the laboratory and clinical testing of novel targeted therapies blocking oncogenic events in melanoma and their use as immune sensitizers
TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH
Dr. Felicia Schanche Hodge
Dr. Hodge's research focuses on chronic health conditions and health beliefs and behaviors among American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Indigenous populations. Her work includes smoking cessation and control, diabetes and cancer screening and control, obesity, adverse childhood events, self-management of pain, and cultural constructs of illness and disease.
CLINICAL RESEARCH
Dr. Utpal Banerjee
● Elucidation of signaling pathways in Drosophilao Hematopoietic stem cell niche maintenanceo Tumorigenesis and cancer metabolismo Pathways of wound healing
BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH
To get into research, you have to do research!
Different avenues to get into a lab:1.Email principal investigators (PI)2.Biomedical Research Minor3.Connections
Email PI’s: www.biosciences.ucla.edu
Biomedical Research Minor
● Integrates research with your academic curriculum (journal club and research presentation seminars)
● Program that helps match you with a lab of interest
● Easier to get the lab that YOU want● www.biomedresearchminor.ucla.edu
Connections
● Academic relationships with teaching assistants and/or professors
● Employment as lab helpers● Friends in research
How would you contact a PI to
express interest in their research?
Contacting the PI
1.Know the research and show it!2.Emailing the PI
a. Concise (no longer than a paragraph)b. Prepare a curriculum vitae (CV)c. Send a class schedule
3.Make it sound that you are available and willing to commit
Additional tips
● Go to poster sessions and talk to people!
● Attend research seminars and talks
● Schedule in lab meetings like a class● Keep up with the literature● Befriend your lab (teamwork is
everything!)● Apply for research programs and
funding
Any questions?
Dianne’s Research
Correction of the sickle-cell disease mutation in hematopoietic stem cells using gene
therapy
Why, yes. Yes, I do science … in a dress.
Joey’s Research
Dendritic cell vaccination for immune targeting of glioblastoma multiforme
