Getting a West Australian HR Learners Permit
The Department of Transport (DoT) stipulates that you do not need a Learners Permit to commence
lessons. However, to sit for your Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) you will need to have obtained one. In
order for us to organise a 2 day course for you and/or book your PDA you will be required to hold a HR
Learners Permit. The steps to attain a HR Learners Permit are as follows:
1. Go to your local Licensing Centre (http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/) and take a
computerised Heavy Vehicle Theory Test (multiple-choice questions). This test is generic for all
classes of heavy vehicles including HR. 10 out of the 17 questions in the attached document will be
asked in your test, you need to get 8 or more correct to pass. Be sure to study all 17 questions
before attempting your theory test. This test costs $18.40.
2. Once you have passed the Heavy Vehicle theory test, you can apply for a HR Learners Permit. This
can be done as soon as you pass your theory test and costs $72.40 which includes 1 PDA.
3. We will then book your PDA on your behalf based on a date and time that suits our schedule as well
as yours. We can then commence your 2 day course or lessons accordingly. The cost for the 2 day
course is $980 and hourly lessons are $100 per hour.
* Please note that overseas and interstate licence holders who apply for a WA drivers licence for the first
time will need to bring 5 forms of approved identification.
