EczemaThis skin condition causes itchy, flaky skin which is often red, scaly, and painful. It can appear anywhere but it’s mostcommon in the skin creases of theelbows, knees and on the scalp.

There are three main types of eczema:

Atopic: this is closely linked withasthma and hayfever. It tends to run in families and usually develops in childhood.

Contact: this is caused by an allergyto something familiar and everyday, like nickel or chemical detergents.Earrings, belt buckles and zips oftencontain nickel. Soaps, perfumes anddetergents can also cause a reaction.

Food allergy or intolerance: thiscan also be a trigger for eczema inmany people.

What can you do? Use a moisturising cream like E45 Itch

Relief Cream* (available from thehealthcare aisles) - this will help makethe skin less dry and itchy.

If you suffer from contact eczema, keep a note of the substances thatmay have caused the reaction so thatyou can avoid them.

Look at your diet to see if there is any link between certain foods andeczema. For more advice, take a lookat our Allergy Advice booklet.

PsoriasisA malfunction in the immune systemcauses skin cells to regeneratethemselves too quickly. As the skin cellsaccumulate, they form scaly areas of skin which itch and feel uncomfortable. Many things can trigger it, includingstress, sunburn, injury or illness.

What can you do? Emollient creams or bath additives can

help psoriasis. Talk to your pharmacistor GP about which product is right foryour symptoms.

* Contains Urea and Lauromacrogols.Always read the label/leaflet before use

Your skin is the biggest organ inyour body. It’s your protectionfrom the outside world, and

you can help to keep it healthy byfollowing these tips from Tesco’sholistic therapist Bharti Vyas:

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise– this will also help to avoid dryness.Try the Tesco Skin Wisdom Silky TouchBody Lotion which contains almondbutter to nourish and condition.

Tip:If you’re prone to spots,

use oil-free skincare products.Your acne products may cause

your skin to become very dry butyou can use an oil-free moisturiser

- use more on drier patches asrequired. Try Tesco SkinWisdom Daily Care Oil

Free Moisture Gel.

Tip:Keep your hair away

from your face, especially your forehead,as the natural oil your

hair produces canencourage spots.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT ACNE? No-one should have to put up with acne, and there’s a lot you can do to help theproblem:

Bacteria on your skin causes spots. Help reduce this by washing your skinwith a pH-balanced soap-freecleanser, such as Simple RefreshingFacial Wash Gel.

Try a spot treatment such as Oxy On-The-Spot*. This can be applieddirectly to problem areas for the treatmentof spots.

Ask your pharmacist about FreedermGel**.It’s the only topical acne treatment thatcontains an anti-inflammatory and it’sclinically proven to reduce acne spotsand redness.

If you’ve got blackheads, use a gentle exfoliatorsuch as Tesco SkinWisdom EnergisingFacial Scrub to removethe dead skin cells sothey don’t block pores.

If you’re suffering from acne whichhasn’t responded to self-treatment, talk toyour GP about other options. Antibioticscan help some people or your GP may

THE COMMON COLD SOREWhat is it?Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blistersthat appear in a moist sensitive area likethe mouth or nose. They may weep and

eventually grow a crust or scab.

How do you get one? They are caused by theherpes simplex virus and canbe caught through direct skincontact with someone who

already has the virus.

When do they appear?Once caught, the virus remains dormantuntil it is triggered by something like anillness (e.g. colds and flu), menstrualperiods, emotional upset or brightsunlight. After the first attack, somepeople will never have another one, whereas others will get them regularly.

What can you do? As sunlight can be a trigger, use a

lip balm containing sunblock in bright sunlight.

As soon as you feel the warning ‘tingle’in your skin, apply a cream containingthe drug aciclovir (for example TescoCold Sore Cream*, available from thehealthcare aisles) to help reduce thelength and severity of the attack.

Pain caused by cold sores can be helpedby applying lidocaine ointment (ask yourpharmacist) or by taking paracetamol.

Always wash your hands beforetouching a sore so as not to introducebacteria and make the problem worse.

Remember treatments can take up to two months to take effect, so don’texpect instant results, but do persevere.

Beauty is only skin deepD

octors often call spots acne, whether you have two or two hundred; and it’s not just teenagers who get it. Hormonal changes that can typically start in your 30s mean that adults can be driven mad by spots too. Acne can have a

profound effect on mood and self esteem and can cause depression if not treated.

Did youknow?

According to the Acne SupportGroup, it’s a myth that chocolateand fried foods make acne worse;but they do recommend a healthy

diet, as this will improve yourgeneral health and ability to fight

inflammation (see backpage for contact

details). 4TOP TO TOE

WHY ME? No-one knows why some people get it andothers don’t, but acne does run in families.Hormonal changes of any kind can alter thetestosterone balance, which is why acne canarise prior to a period, if you’re taking thepill or when you’re pregnant.

What causes acne?Acne sufferers have increased sensitivity in theirskin’s sebaceous glands. This results in glandsbecoming blocked with sebum and more prone to infection, causing spots.

All TescoPharmacies have aprivate consultingarea so you can

discuss what mightbe best for you in

privacy.

TYPES OF SPOTS Blackheads: caused by partially blocked

pores, these are flat, darkened spots (thedark colour is caused when the thick sebuminside comes into contact with the air).

Whiteheads: these are the same asblackheads, but occur just near the surface of the skin and remain closed. Infection islikely as the grease and bacteria can’t escape.

Red and yellow spots: these occur whenthe blocked oil in the pores allows bacteriato multiply resulting in the area becomingswollen and inflamed. If these spots becomevery bad, talk to your GP who may be ableto prescribe antibiotic treatments.

Some acne sufferers may develop cysts but luckily these are very rare.

Tip:When you have a

cold sore, don’t kissanyone or let others

come into skin contactwith it to avoid passing

the virus on.

* Contains Aciclovir. * Contains Benzoyl Peroxide.** Contains Nicotinamide. Always read the label / leaflet before use.

Handling hair lossDid you know it’s estimated that six out of 10 women will experience hair lossto some degree during their lifetime? Some hair loss problems can betemporary whereas others arepermanent – for example:

Having a baby: hormonal changesstop you losing hair while you’repregnant so there’s a ‘backlog’ to get through when you get back tonormal. It may feel scary but don’tworry, your hair will settle down.

The menopause: some womenexperience hair loss due to changinghormone levels whilst they go throughthe menopause but, like pregnancy, thiswill settle down in time.

It’s in the genes: hereditary hair lossis one of the most common causes ofthinning hair in women. Men can alsosuffer – male pattern balding is themost common hair loss.

Thickening hair treatments, such asRegaine* (available in differentstrengths for men and women) canhelp. (But it should not be used ifyour scalp is red, inflamed, irritated, infected, painful or shaved.)

Hair can be helped to appear to bethicker by using a volume-enhancingshampoo such as McAdam VolumeThickening Shampoo.

Planning a trip? Chlorine in the pool, salt in the sea andsunshine can play havoc with your hair, drying it out dramatically.

For these reasons allow at least a weekbefore going on holiday if you’re having aperm or hair colourant put in. Pack a hatand use special protective products, toprotect your hair from sea, sun and thepool. For example, Ultraswim can helpremove chlorine.

Developing any kind of hair problemcan be upsetting and distressing as itis almost always visible. If you start

to suffer, don’t despair – there is a lot youcan do to help yourself.

Psoriasis can look like a very badattack of dandruff. The flakes aresilvery-white and your scalp will bered and inflamed. Anti-dandruffshampoos, such as Polytar***, mayhelp, but if it is very severe talk toyour doctor or pharmacist for more advice.

Scalp ringworm is another type of fungal infection that can cause anitchy, flaky scalp. It may cause circularpatches of hair loss. Prescriptionmedication is neededto treat thiscondition - talkto your GP formoreinformation.

WHAT’S THE CAUSE? Dandruff is the most common cause

of a flaky scalp. Every day you losedead skin cells from your scalp but, if you have dandruff, this processspeeds up, and the cells clumptogether, forming white or grey flakescalled dandruff. The main cause is ayeast, but other factors, such asstress, changes in climate or evenwearing a hat, can also make it worse.Using an anti-dandruff shampoo (forexample Nizoral Dandruff Shampoo*)should clear it within 2-4 weeks.

Eczema causes a more severe form of dandruff. As well as your hair, it will also affect the skin around youreyebrows, nose, ears, face and forehead. The flakes are yellow and greasylooking and the skin is red, itchy andcrusty. Wash your hair every week, orevery other week, with a shampoospecially formulated (for exampleAlphosyl 2 in 1 Shampoo**) to helprelieve the scaling and itching which can be associated with eczema.

Flaky, itchy, scratchy scalp?

Didyou know?

Your scalp is very sensitive,so to help prevent dandruff,

when you’re shampooing yourhair, massage it, rather thanscratching, and rinse it well.Excessive use of a hairdryercan also aggravate dandruff

so avoid overdryingyour hair.

If you’re sufferingfrom hair loss, the

following advice may help: Use a mild shampoo and

conditioner made from naturalingredients.

Avoid frequent colouring with chemical treatments.

Use a good brush and don’t pull the hair.

Did youknow?

When you’re pregnanthair is often drier thanusual so you may need

to use a strongerconditioner.

Tip: For healthy hair,

taking a completeB vitamin

supplement mayhelp.

Tescostocks a range of

different shampoos tohelp these conditions. You’ll find them in the

healthcare aisles. If yousuffer from severe dandruff,

talk to your pharmacistfor more advice.

GETTING TO GRIPS WITH GLAUCOMAOver the age of 40, one in 50 peoplewill have glaucoma (raised pressure inthe eyes which may lead to blindness ifnot treated).

Glaucoma has no symptoms in its earlystages. You may just think you’re clumsy, but up to 40% of useful sight can be lostbefore you notice.

That’s why eye tests are crucial. Whenglaucoma is diagnosed, using pressurelowering eye drops can minimise furthereyesight loss.

Some people are more at risk thanothers. These include those:

• Of Afro-Caribbean origin.

• Over 40.

• Who suffer from diabetes.

• With very short sight (severe myopia).

There are in-store opticians at someTesco stores where you can get youreyes tested and find a full range ofglasses and contact lenses. Call 0845 601 3479 for the nearest one to you.

It’s important for everyone to haveregular eye checks with an optician. An eye test includes a thorough eye

health examination. It’s not just theobvious problems like short sightednesswhich opticians can help with – they canalso pick up signs of serious eye diseasesbefore the symptoms appear. Your eyesare also an indicator of your general healthand well-being - another reason why it isimportant to keep a check on them.

A full eye test can detect age-related maculardegeneration (AMD) which is the leadingcause of sight loss in older people. Changesthat indicate diabetes and high blood pressurecan also be detected. For that reason, theRoyal National Institute of the Blindrecommends an eye examination at least onceevery two years, whether or not you needglasses, more often if you have sight problems.

WHAT IS GLUE EAR? Glue ear is a very common conditionthat affects children. It occurs whenpockets of infection remain in the innerear, deadening hearing. This can affectspeech development which is whyparents should look out for signs of glue ear – these could include:
