•Understand that • Technology systems are often combined to

create more complex systems• Technology systems often interact with

each other.

Page 3: Getting from here to there, technology is everywhere.

•Understand that the Core Technologies are the building blocks of all technology systems.

• Recognize the core technologies in

common technology systems.

The Career TeamScientist: Helps discover and explains how the world around us works.

Engineer: Defines the problem and comes up with a solution the problem.

Technologist: Works closely with the engineer to make improvements to an existing product.

Technicians: Tests, fixes and maintains products.

Craft person: Builds the product that the Engineer designed.

The Core Technologies

Materials – TTO producing, altering and combining materials

Mechanical – TTO putting mechanical parts together to produce, control, and transmit

motion.

Optical: TTO producing light; controlling light; using light for information collection, processing, storage, retrieval, and communication, and using light to do work.

Structural: TTO putting parts and materials together to create supports, containers, ,shelters, connectors, and functional shapes.

Thermal: TTO producing, storing, controlling, transmitting, and getting workfrom heat energy.

Bio-tech: TTO using, adapting, and altering organisms and biological processes for a desired outcome.

Electronics: TTO using small amounts of electricity for controlling; detecting; and information collecting, storing, retrieving, processing, and communicating.

Electrical: TTO producing, storing, controlling, transmitting, and getting work from electrical energy.

Fluid: TTO using fluid, either gaseous (pneumatics) or liquid (hydraulics) to apply force or to transport

Technology SystemsCombining Core Technologies to create products

Fluid – air in the tires, oil for the brakes

Structural – Frame of the car

Optical - Head lights to see at night

Thermal – Radiator to keep engine cool

Material – The stuff the car is made out of

Electrical – Battery and alternator to generate electricity

Mechanical – The engine and transmission of car

Electronic – Computer to control fuel consumption

BioTechnology

• Vaccines developed for use in immunization – require specialized technologies to support environments in which

a sufficient amount of vaccines are produced.

• Artificial ecosystems – Human-made complexes that replicate some aspects of the natural

environment.

• Genetic engineering– Involves modifying the structure of DNA to produce novel genetic

make-ups.

• Technological advances in agriculture – Genetically altered crops– Directly affect the time and number of people required to produce

food for a large population.
