The Hudson Valley region of NewYork has inspired painters, politi-cians and pioneers for more than

Orange CountyJust across the state line in Port Jervis, N.Y.is the southern gateway to the UpperDelaware Scenic Byway– also known asRoute 97. The 70-mile stretch parallels theDelaware River and connects several rivercommunities with history dating back toAmerica’s earliest days. In Orange County aspectacular span of road, known as Hawk’sNest (below), winds through the mountainsand offers breathtaking vistas of the riverand valley below. Motorcycle Magazinenamed it one of the best riding roads in theNortheast. Opportunities for camping, fish-ing, hiking and bird watching are abundant.Stop in any of the small towns and explorea variety of art galleries, museums, antiqueshops, general stores and places to eat.Sightseeing is a must. Don’t miss FortDecker Museum of History in Port Jervis.Home to the Minisink Valley HistoricalSociety, the stone house dates to 1793.Revolutionary War veteran LieutenantMartinus Decker built the structure, whichalso served as a D&H Canal hotel in the1820s. In Port Jervis, you can’t pass up theopportunity to stand in three states at onetime. The feat may be accomplished at the

aptly named– Tri-States Monument. Strollthe path to the Tri-States Rock and take inthe view from New York, New Jersey andPennsylvania.

Orange County is defined by the DelawareRiver on its western border and the HudsonRiver to the east. Head east, take a breakfrom looking at the river and get on it.Pride of the Hudson departs fromNewburgh, N.Y. with two-hour narratedsightseeing cruises. Points of interest visiblefrom deck include Bannerman Castle,Pollepel Island, Cold Spring, Storm KingMountain, Breakneck Mountain and WestPoint.

Ulster CountyThe best way to experience the beauty ofthe Hudson River Valley is up close and per-sonal. The pristine, rugged terrain ofMohonk Preserve allows you to do just that.Outdoor enthusiasts may indulge just aboutany passion on 8,000 acres of mountainridges, forests, fields, streams and ponds inthe Shawangunk Mountains. car. The five-mile, 45-minute round trip begins in Mt.Tremper and travels along the Esopus Creek to Boiceville.

Columbia CountyCross the Hudson River and experience the history and heritageof the people who called the Hudson River Valley home. Thescenery around him inspired one of America’s preeminent land-scape painters. Frederic Church rose to fame in the mid-1800swith paintings that were characterized by a calmness and senseof hope. In 1870 he began construction of a Persian style home,called Olana, inspired by his trips to the Middle East, with sweep-ing views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. Today visi-tors can tour the home that remains much as it did duringChurch’s time including the original furniture, rugs, bronzes,paintings and sculptures collected by the artist himself over 30years. Visitors maytake a self-guided tour of the property on fivemiles of carriage roads that traverse the terrain.The eighth president of the United States madehis home in the Hudson River Valley. On his farm,called Lindenwald, Martin Van Buren managed

two presidential campaigns and entertainedpoliticians and influential personalities of the1840s and ‘50s. The property is a NationalHistoric Site, under the supervision of theNational Park service. Visitors may take ranger-led tours of the estate. The property includes theoriginal mansion, which dates to the 1790s andwas renovated in the mid 1800s. The home andproperty were restored to Van Buren’s time ofoccupancy (1841-1862).

New York Zip Line Tours promisesto sweep you off your feet– literallyand figuratively. Located at scenicHunter Mountain in New York'sCatskills, this attraction offers threedifferent outdoor adventures.
