Established in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, Ryman Auditorium is a Nation-al Historic Landmark and must see for any Nashville visitor. Most famous as the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 — 1974,

there is far more to the story of Music City’s most recog-nizable icon. Take a Self-Guided or Guided Backstage tour and discover what makes the Ryman, the “Soul of Nashville.” At the start of your tour, you will be immersed in the Ryman’s magical history during “Soul of Nashville,” a one-of-a-kind theater experience which puts the spotlight on more than a century of legendary performances and showcases a new collaboration with Darius Rucker, The Fisk Jubilee Singers, Sheryl Crow and Vince Gill. Five new exhibits are now open! “Workin’ on a Building,” “Showplace of the South,” Mother Church of Country Music,” “Ryman Stage to Screen,” and “Ryman Renaissance”. Peruse genuine artifacts and enjoy videos with hosts Charles Esten, Marty Stuart, Nicole Kidman, Ricky Skaggs, Robin Roberts and Trisha Yearwood as they take you through each chapter of the fascinating Ryman story. Explore its rich entertainment history and how the Ryman became known as the “Carnegie Hall of South” during the years when Caruso and Sousa performed, Theodore Roosevelt spoke, and Houdini escaped in the 5th Avenue vestibule timeline. Then, take your place center stage, grab a guitar and step up to the microphone while you have your photo taken on the legendary planks.

Visit the Ryman Gift Shop and take a piece of music history home with you! Find exclusive Ryman merchandise including tee-shirts, Hatch Show Prints, and novelty memorabilia along with specialty CDs and DVDs. And now, you can make your own custom shirt at the all new activity station. Open daily from 9 am until 7 pm with extended hours during events.

Take a Guided Backstage Tour* through dressing rooms dedicated to the stars of the Ryman’s rich musical past including Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and Minnie Pearl, and stand in the wings where performers as varied as Elvis Presley, James Brown and Katharine Hepburn stood awaiting their time in the spotlights. Make a Record at the Ryman! Do you sing? Visit the Ryman’s recording studio and cut your own CD**! Choose from a selection of classic songs or bring an original composition of your own and let our sound engineer record your rendition right in the Ryman Auditorium. Your Ryman Records CD — labeled with your name and song — will make a great souvenir or special gift. The all new Cafe Lula features fresh, heathy fare with an emphasis on rotisserie cooking. Dine in or grab and go! Open daily 7 am–7 pm with extended hours during events. Open for Tours Daily from 9 am – 4:30 pm. Self-guided tour: adults $20.00, children 4-11 $15. Backstage tour: adults $27.50, children 4-11 $22.50. 615-889-3060 ryman.com.

destination

In 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee, the first combination candy bar was invented. A roundish mound of luscious caramel, creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, the Goo Goo Cluster has been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since. Goo Goo Clusters were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, a team of ladies was responsible for swaddling the Goo Goo Clusters in tin foil before they were sold. Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the candy. Today, the process is so streamlined that Standard Candy Company in Nashville can produce 20,000 clusters in one hour! In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme, which replaces peanuts with pecans, and the Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate. Last year saw another exciting addition to the brand’s offerings when Goo Goo Cluster opened its flagship retail store, the Goo Goo Shop, in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville. The Goo Goo Shop is no ordinary retail store. Visitors have the opportunity to take a walk through history as they peruse a 100+ year timeline complete with artifacts from the Goo Goo archives. But the sweetest part of the new space (pun intended) may be the glassed-encased confectionery kitchen, where Premium Goo Goos are made by hand daily in full view of visitors. Premium Goo Goos, the newest addition to the company’s product offerings, are sold exclusively at the Goo Goo Shop. This 4 ounce confection is more than twice the size of an Original Goo Goo Cluster, and comes in various flavors. The Premium menu rotates periodically and new flavors are introduced on a regular basis. In recent months, some of the most popular have been a peanut butter and pretzel version and a toasted pistachio, cherry and dark chocolate ganache version. Visit oftento try them all! For more information on Goo Goo Cluster and the Goo Goo Shop, visit www.googoo.com.

T he hallowed Rotunda at The Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville Tennessee is where the plaques of inducted Hall of Famers are mounted in a huge and beautiful circle. “All are equal inside of this circle” is the mantra

and it is a sight to behold. The words Will The Circle Be Unbroken are written above the bronzed plaques and the circular ceiling that is bathed in sunlight seems to rise above to the Heavens which is also symbolic for many of our Country Music Heroes who we have loved have moved on beyond this earth and their light does seem to shine down upon the Rotunda. It is still mind boggling to me that The Oak Ridge Boys will be enshrined here come October. So early this morning I drove down to The HALL for an interview on WSM. I was scheduled to appear around 9 AM to talk with Bill Cody about our induction. Well I awakened with the sun and decided to go on downtown early to beat the Nashville rush hour traffic and managed to get to The Hall Of Fame almost 90 minutes before my interview. Security brought me on up to the main floors where all of the exhibits as well as The Rotunda are on display. It would be an hour before the Hall opened to the public so while I waited for my interview I wandered around the empty Hall of Fame. Now I have written several editorials and a magazine piece already about the beauty and length and breadth of our new CMHOF and education center so I won’t elaborate. Suffice to say that it is a magnificent tribute to America’s

country legends of today and yesterday and to the music itself. There are ghosts everywhere. I talked to John and June this morning. I chatted with George Jones and Tammy and Conway. I stood before Earl Scruggs Banjo and thanked him for being a banjo hero to me. I spent time with Miss Minnie and the Tater and thanked Ernest Tubb for the signed picture he gave my father in law once. It just meant the world to him and it now hangs on my wall at home. After my mystical visiting sessions I entered the Rotunda where our own faces would be immortalized in bronze very soon. I sat down and took it all in. It was just me… all alone…on the floor…sitting in the middle of the circle that would forever be unbroken... I wept like a child. I could envision our entire career playing out in my minds

eye. The songs, the miles, the shows, the ups and downs and I took comfort in the fact that it is all far from over. I could see younger versions of myself and Duane Allen, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban dreaming dreams and reaching for the stars and working hard to make sure we did everything the right way and now I see us HERE! In The Country Music Hall of Fame… The ROTUNDA! The greatest honor in a career of honors is to be up on that wall… in this circle.

I got up, said a prayer of thanks to God and wiped the tears… I will NEVER forget these moments… Not EVER!

Joseph S Bonsall is the author of the book On The Road With The Oak Ridge Boys.

T he highly anticipated GRAMMY Gallery will open in Fall 2015 and will be an 8,500 square foot expansion of the

Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located on the first floor of the Nashville Historic Municipal Audi-torium. Through educational interactive stations, the permanent GRAMMY Gallery will explore the creative process of making music in a hands on, immersive environment — from songwriting and producing to engineering, mixing, singing, and rapping. The gallery will explore the role of the DJ and the history of the GRAMMY Awards — the pre-eminent peer-recognized award for musical excellence. In addition, the Gallery will include an exhibit about the history of the GRAMMY Awards and a 3-D view of the making of the iconic gramophone-shaped GRAMMY Award. “The Musicians Hall of Fame is a diverse multi-genre museum, much like the GRAMMY Museum,” said Joe Chambers, Executive Director of the museum. “Our collection of iconic musical instruments that have been used in live and studio sessions by some of the greatest musicians in the world, married with the GRAMMY Museum’s state-of-the-art, interactive, and educational gallery, will be a great experience for all visitors to Music City.” The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum honors the background musicians who played on thousands of iconic albums throughout history. Yes, Nashville is stereo-typically country, but it is by no means the only genre that has been or is being created here. This museum

sheds light on the recording sessions that were otherwise closed to the public. Visitors learn what went on during sessions such as Elvis recording “In the Ghetto” at American Sound Studios

in Memphis; Ringo Starr recording “Beaucoup of Blues” at Studio 19 in Nashville, or The Beach Boys recording their countless hits with The Wrecking Crew at Los Angeles’s Capitol Records. The GRAMMY Gallery at Musicians Hall of Fame is a one-of-a-kind public-private partnership that repurposes a historic city property at a fraction of new construction cost and adds a unique destination and experience for Music City visitors and residents. “We are excited to develop our one-of-a-kind interactive experiences at the Musicians Hall

of Fame,” said Bob Santelli, Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum. “It will explore the intricacies of the recording process, from beginning to end, in a city where so much great music is made.” The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum also hosts an annual induction ceremony and concert which honors new members, nominated by the American Federation of Musicians and other music industry professionals, and ensures the continued

growth of the museum. The 2014 induction included greats such as Barbara Mandrell, Peter Frampton, and Randy Bachman. Nashville mogul Mike Curb was inducted with a Non-performance Award and Roy Orbison posthumously received the inaugural Iconic Riff Award.

H is music career ran the gamut – from 78

RPM Records all the way to digital downloads. Though George Jones has been gone for a little over two years now, his artistic legacy remains as bright as ever. His name continues to be referenced as an influence of just about every newcomer in the

format that comes down the pike today, and his records continue to sell well – both here in the United States and abroad. Jones told his life story in his 1997 autobiography I Lived To Tell It All, but now fans can get up close and personal with “The Possum” with the brand new state-of-the-art George Jones Museum. Located at 128 Second Avenue North in downtown Nashville, the story of George Glenn Jones is told in as much vivid detail as ever before – to his growing up years in Texas going to sleep with the Grand Ole Opry playing on the radio to his 1955 breakthrough hit “Why Baby Why” all the way through his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse in the 1970s and 1980s, ending up with his latter-day triumphs such as “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and “Choices” (both Grammy-winning performances) to his 1992 induc-tion into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The George Jones Museum also features many video screens that show Jones doing what he did best- performing. Many archival interviews featuring the singer are featured as well. Also part of the displays include his numerous Gold and Platinum records – both as a solo art-ist, and as part of duets with acts such as Tammy Wynette and Merle Haggard. (Including these artists, Jones also re-corded with over fifty other acts, including Buck Owens, Mavis Staples, Dolly Parton, Dr. Hook, Keith Richards, and Harry Connick, Jr.) One aspect of the George Jones Museum that will

please fans is the interactive recording studio which gives visitors a chance to match vocal wits with Jones on a va-riety of his classic hit recordings. All told, Jones recorded over 900 songs, and charted on the Billboard Country Singles chart over 150 times between 1955 and 2010. In addition to the Museum, there is also a restaurant and gift shop that will allow fans to take home a George Jones souvenir, as well as a 75-foot rooftop bar overlook-ing the Cumberland River. On opening weekend (April

2015), the Museum also served as the launch site for White Lightning’ Moonshine. A partnership with Silver Trail Distillery (winners of the 2012 SIP Award for best Whiskey Moonshine – as well as developers of the LBL Moonshine that was just picked up by a national dis-tributor), the brand pays homage to the J.P. Richardson-written song of the same title – which became Jones’ first number one record on the Billboard charts in 1959. Jones’ wife / widow, Nancy Jones, says that she feels the Museum will be a place that fans can pay homage to Jones for years to come. “On a daily basis I hear from fans asking me to tell them stories about George. This amaz-ing museum will now be able to help tell those stories as we are going to show so many of his awards, clothes, guitars, and artifacts given to him all around the world from various events. I think fans are going to love it.”

N ancy Jones invites you for a walk through George Jones’s life. Experience a winding wall of

memorabilia and create some very special memories of your own, including singing with the legendary George Jones. Your experience only gets larger as you visit the Museum gift shop, stop by the tasting bar for a sip or two of White Lightning, enjoy a flavorful dish at Possum Holler Café and then take a ride to the rooftop and see the best view in Downtown Nashville. Country music fans from around the world visit year after year to experience the unique country music history that comes alive

as you journey through the Willie Nelson and Friends Museum. This is a very personal museum that evolved over the years from friendships established by museum founders, Frank and Jeanie Oakley. The Oakley’s were longtime friends with not only Willie Nelson but many of his legendary country music friends as well. There are lots of personal items to see donated by legends like Webb Pierce and Faron Young who were regulars at the museum prior to their passing. The museum has always been known as a great hangout for many of the stars you’ll see represented in the many exhibits. The museum is true country music history and showcases an “All Star” line-up of some of traditional country music’s greatest stars! Among the many highlights on display include the Martin guitar and paystub from Willie

Nelson’s Grand Ole Opry debut in 1963. You’ll also see many personal items of the great Patsy Cline. Also featured are several “Nudie of Hollywood” suits worn by the legends Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Webb Pierce and Porter Wagoner. The Willie Nelson and Friends Museum is undeniably one of the best values in Nashville. It’s a family operated and family friendly attraction with plenty of free parking. You are also welcome to take photographs during your journey so don’t forget your camera!

The longest running musical is back by popular demand, the legend lives on in Nashville’s first and only

continuously running show paying tribute to him in Music City, where he recorded over 300 songs. This high-energy, live musical biography starring John Beardsley transports the audience through six eras of The King’s career and is unique in showcasing all of his most memorable and distinct styles of music. John Beardsley’s world-renowned performance with over 30 songs and five costume changes has thrilled audiences of all ages from New York to Russia. Many music industry giants who worked with and were friends of Elvis give impressive reviews to Beardsley’s Tribute: “John, you are a great showman; this is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen!” declared Kitty Wells, Queen of Country Music, who

toured with Elvis. “This show is fabulous! John is so talented and so very respectful of Elvis, you just have to see!” raved Joanne Cash Yates, sister of Johnny Cash. Audiences continue to give standing ovations at every show, and they walk away excited and entertained. All guests are greeted by friendly smiles and the meet-and-greet after the show is special for everyone.

Are you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is

definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

Conway Twitty to Sara Evans and Toby Keith. There is entertainment for the entire family. The “Best of Country” Dinner and Show, throughout their season, includes guest stars such as “Opry Star” Jeannie Seely, “The Fiddle Man” Tim Watson, Tommy Cash, Diana Murrell, Paula Poe (from the Tammy Wynette Show) and many others. This is a fantastic show you won’t want to miss! The standing ovation at the end of the show is an indication of the great time the audience had. Following the show there is a meet and greet with the performers. I would highly recommend that visitors to Nashville experience Nashville Nightlife where you will see the best of country from old to new. Come see why the Nashville Nightlife Dinner Theater presents a Dinner and Country Music Show voted the best combination in Nashville. Don’t miss this Nashville tradition. T he Mantz Brothers, the duo comprised of brothers Jordan and Holdan Mantz, kicked off their “Back at Me” tour starting with perfor-mances during CMA week in Nashville. Their first stop was at

Storme Warren’s Nashville Navy Kickoff Party with other great artists including Jaime Fox, Love and Theft, Halfway to Haz-ard and Brett Michaels, just to name a few. They introduced some of their new music, which is now available on iTunes, and their fans loved it! The momentum continued throughout the week as they performed at “Music at The Row”, The Midtown Stages. Fans that couldn’t make it out to Nashville were able to watch the live broadcast of their performance worldwide which was live streamed. Their new single, just released to country radio, “Back

at Me” was a huge crowd pleaser! It was an extra special performance to have Ashla Taylor, one of the songwriters of the hit, perform on the stage as well. The Mantz Brothers released their first EP in June 2014 and

their first single, “One Kiss at a Time” debuted as a “Highway Find” on Sirius XM the Highway. Their single was on the Hot 45 Live for five consecutive weeks and gained a lot of attention. “Jordan and Holdan knocked it out of the park again with the 5 tunes on their new EP” said Producer, Eddie Kilgallon. “We listened to hundreds of songs to find the perfect match-can’t wait for their fans to hear the new project!” Check out The Mantz Brothers

The latest expansion includes tripling the size of the museum store and adding a Bongo Java Café featuring Nashville’s finest coffee and coffee drinks as well as gourmet café fare. For “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee”, you’ve got to visit Jack’s Bar-B-Que where they proudly serve barbeque

from “Pit to Plate”. Offering Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis style ribs, smoked chicken, and other Southern cuisine with their award-winning sauces, there is something to please every palate. Their cooking method and award-winning sauces make Jack’s the best. After applying their dry rub (spices and herbs) meat is smoked for 18 hours at 250 degrees. From “Pit to Plate”, it is sliced and chopped before serving and you will notice a pink smoke ring. That’s the real signature of hickory smoked barbeque. Jack recommends pouring sauces right before eating. Award-winning sauces include Kansas City Style (mild, sweet and smoky), Tennessee Original (tangy vinegar base), Texas Sweet Hot (tomato base), XXX-911 (cross between TN & TX with a kick), Carolina Style (mustard base), and Music City White Sauce (mayo, horseradish base). Purchase any four of Jack’s Bar-B-Que Famous Sauces and get a FREE Hand Rub! When you dine at Jack’s, you will see for yourself why Jack’s Bar-B-Que has been named “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee” by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Southern Living, and USA Today. 3 Locations to serve you (T.C.B) Trinity, Charlotte and Broadway. All 3 historic locations, 334 West Trinity Lane at Historic Talbot Corner, 1601 Charlotte Avenue on the Historic Prison Grounds at the foot of Capital Hill and 416 Broadway at the heart of the Honky Tonks on Lower Broadway. “Taking Care of Business since 1976”. On exhibit now thru November 1, 2015 at Cheekwood is the fabulous Jaume Plensa: Human Landscape. This is the latest grand-scale exhibition to be featured at the estate’s historic grounds and Museum

of Art. The exhibition will feature outdoor and indoor installations by internationally acclaimed Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, including sculptures imagined specifically for Cheekwood’s grounds. The exhibition is organized by Cheekwood in partnership with The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, where four of the artist’s sculptures will also be on view.

Jaume Plensa: Human Landscape will be the artist’s largest exhibition to date in the United States. His best-known U.S. works include Crown Fountain in Chicago’s Millennium Park, and Echo, formerly on view in Madison Square Park in New York, now permanently sited at Olympic Sculpture Park at the Seattle Museum of Art. Plensa is the recipient of many international accolades and awards, including the 2012 prestigious National Visual Arts Award of Spain, the 2013 Velasquez Prize awarded by the Spanish Cultural Ministry, and Spain’s 2013 National Graphic Arts Prize. Plensa’s body of work is inspired by the complexities of the human condition, the exploration between interior and exterior life, and the transmission of language and culture. Using cast iron, steel, bronze, alabaster and other materials, his distinctive sculptural portraits blur the line of language, culture, belief system and physicality to achieve luminous beauty and grace, a sense of harmony, and supreme calm. This comprehensive exhibition at Cheekwood will

span the historic estate’s grounds, gardens and museum galleries with nine large-scale outdoor sculptures, indoor installations and a selection of works on paper. Plensa will create two new works as a part of the exhibition, including a double sculpture entitled Soul of Words, sited on the prominent color garden lawn. Other highlights include Laura with Bun, a 23 foot high cast iron portrait gracing the entrance to Cheekwood’s grounds placed in conversation with Plensa’s monumental sculpture Isabella (2014), installed near the entrance to the Frist Center. “Special events and programming around our exhibitions is part of what makes Cheekwood such a valuable part of the community, said Shannon Hautman, Director of Education and Public Programs. From lively cultural experiences to more academic lectures, we’ve created so many wonderful opportunities for people to really connect with this important exhibition.”

DID You KNoW…The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville.

DID You KNoW…That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art.

DID You KNoW…Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon.

DID You KNoW…Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album.

The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere.

DID You KNoW…Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big.

DID You KNoW…Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were

two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep.

DID You KNoW…In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio.

DID You KNoW…The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art.

DID You KNoW…African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals,

angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

DID You KNoW…Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson.

DID You KNoW…The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come.

DID You KNoW…Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry.

DID You KNoW…After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine

Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.

DID You KNoW…Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job.

DID You KNoW…That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish.

DID You KNoW…President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo.

DID You KNoW…Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast.

DID You KNoW…The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee.

DID You KNoW…The Union Station Hotel, a National Historic Landmark since 1977, was originally built in 1900 as the city’s railroad station.

There is only one Music City, and today Nashville continues its emergence as a cultural, artistic and entertainment-rich

destination, filled with unique music, a myriad of art galleries, botanical gardens and greenways, historic homes, honky-tonks and culinary delights. There’s a whole host of attractions that have made Music City famous. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which includes over a million artifacts exploring country’s connections to blues, R&B and pop, will also feature the temporary exhibit, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and California Country opening in March 2012. Across the street stands the home of the Grammy-award winning Nashville Symphony, the dazzling $123 million Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Inspired by the greatest concert halls in the world, the 197,000-square-foot classically-

columned venue offers an unparalleled acoustical experience. Nashville has a pristine collection of antebellum estate mansions: Belle Meade, where a string of winning thoroughbreds was raised; The Hermitage, presidential home of Andrew Jackson; and Belmont Mansion, drenched in Victorian grandeur. Tour the beautifully-restored hilltop State Capitol building, then walk down to the Tennessee State Museum for an educational tour of the state’s history and culture. Dubbed the Athens of the South for its elegance, style and many academic institutions, Nashville claims a full-size replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, complete with the 42-ft high statue Athena, the tallest indoor sculpture in the western world. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, an exquisitely converted Art Deco post office, hosts roving exhibitions changing every couple of months. The mansion at Cheekwood houses an extensive art gallery surrounded by 55 acres of divine gardens. What truly sets the city apart is the music. Music is the very heart of Nashville. Long recognized as the world’s capital of country music, Music City also boasts sounds of pop, rock, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues and soul. Supported by rhythm tracks of culture and history, Nashville is uniquely and authentically “Music City.” In Nashville you can hear great music 24/7, 365 days a year. A great place to begin a tour is on Lower Broadway where honky tonks line the street. Here you’ll find evocative names like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Robert’s Western World, and you never know who you might see (or hear), a current star or the next big thing.

You’ll catch star-dusted pickers and songwriters all over town, in places like bluegrass venue Station Inn, the rockin’ Exit/In, the honky tonkin’ bars on Broadway, the song-centered Bluebird Café or the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Of course, the ultimate country venue is the Grand Ole Opry House, where legends and current stars perform on the nation’s longest-running live radio program. Eating and drinking are high on the list of priorities. Nashville’s palate offers everything from Southen fare to haute cuisine with quite literally everything in between. Here, a perfect barbecue is as celebrated as the most spectacular creation from any of the city’s award-winning chefs. Whether it’s a family-friendly meal, dinner and a show or a romantic repast, the city’s restaurants serve every dish with a side of Southern hospitality. With its charming mix of musical, historical and cultural flavors, Nashville is truly a city for all seasons and styles. So whether it’s listening to live music, soaking in the art scene, exploring history or simply relaxing, you’ll find many ways to enjoy Music City and discover why music calls us home.

A must see in nAshville

T he Johnny Cash Museum features the largest collection of Johnny Cash memorabilia in the world. From The Man in Black’s earliest child-hood artifacts to the very last song he wrote, you’ll find it here.

Exhibits chronicle Johnny’s life and provide a very personal and unique glimpse into his world. Depicted in stunning graphics, artifacts and interactive technology, visitors are provided a three dimensional walk through the life and legend of this international icon. Our exhibits include Johnny’s stage costumes, instruments, personal letters, artwork and handwritten songs as well as artifacts from family members and notable friends. More than 25 costumes are on exhibit including the gown worn by First lady Patricia Nixon when Cash played the White House in 1971. Another highlight is the custom Gibson J200 guitar Johnny had made in 1958 which was on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for seven years before moving to its present home here in Nashville. The instrument is valued at $250,000. Our newest exhibit, Legends of Sun Records, features artifacts, films and musical recordings from Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. Among the artifacts featured are some of the earliest Presley pieces ever discovered, a pair of Roy Orbison’s signature eyeglasses, handwritten lyrics to the Rock and Roll anthem Blue Suede Shoes and much more. Cash, who sold more than 100 million records, is one of the world’s best known and loved entertainers. His concerts tours took him around the world and he is known in every corner of the globe. He has received virtually every award the entertainment world has to offer and is the only entertainer in history to be inducted into the Rock and Roll, Country Music, Songwriter’s and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His Facebook page has over

10 million followers; more than most living entertainers. He posted over 130 hits on the Billboard Country singles chart. Cash placed at least two singles on the Country charts for 38 consecutive years, including an amazing 25 hits between 1958 and 1960. Johnny Cash is the only artist to have songs on the Billboard charts for six consecutive decades. He received two of the Nation’s greatest honors; The National Medal of Arts, presented by President George W. Bush and the Kennedy Center Honors, presented by President Bill Clinton. He amassed 17 Grammy awards during the span of his career; among the most awarded to any entertainer in history. Personalities ranging from Snoop Dog, the members of U2, Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Springsteen and several U.S. Presidents, among many others are self-professed Cash fans, demonstrating his broad popularity which spans age and culture. Among the many highlights are the handwritten lyrics to his classic hits I Walk the Line and Folsom Prison Blues. You’ll also see a stone wall from Johnny and June’s storied home on the lake in Hendersonville including their precious antique furnishings and personal belongings. Our Museum Store features the largest selection of Cash souvenirs, apparel and rare collectibles available anywhere in the world. Come and visit the Johnny Cash Museum. Our staff members include Cash family members and friends who love to visit and share stories with our guests. No trip to Nashville would be complete without a visit to the Johnny Cash Museum. We’ll see you there!

Museum and Museum Store hours are 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM seven days per week. Closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. For more information call 615-256-1777.
