Incorpo- rating the spirit and magic of rhythm through drums and percussion instru- ments, LAPD Band member Timm Boatman always provides a steady beat. His percussive expertise is known far and wide, as is his commitment to var- ious musical genres. Timm says he was 4 years old when he knew he wanted to play the drums. He said his family was living in New Haven, Conn., at the time, and every Saturday a drum and bugle corps would rehearse a half a block away. Instilled with a sense of rhythm at four, Timm was also exposed to other types of music through his parents, who both sang in barbershop quartets. Music continued in the family, with his brother playing the trumpet, his sister the piano, and another brother also playing the drums. Surrounded by such a talented family, Timm was bound for a musical career that was to include playing percussion in many musical formats and in various countries around the world. Timm played in his high school band in Richardson, Texas, and in 1969 he moved to Los Angeles to attend the Music School at the University of Southern California. From 1969 to 1972, he played with the American Youth Symphony, Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra, Los Angeles Bureau of Music Orchestra, Pan American Ensemble, Pacific Per- cussion Ensemble and at Harold’s Club Casino. Timm said he was inspired by such famous drummers as Joe Morello with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Sonny Greer with Duke Ellington, Al Jackson Jr., Mitchell Peters and, of course, Buddy Rich. Timm began his pro- fessional career with the Dallas Symphony and Opera. He went on to perform with the Los Angeles Phil- harmonic, including recordings conducted by Zubin Mehta, André Previn, Michael Tilson Thomas and Leonard Bernstein. He played for six tours in Japan with the Music of Mancini and Percy Faith Orchestra, and played for concerts in Canada, Mexico and throughout the United States. He played for the American Ballet eater, Joffrey Ballet, Dance eater of Harlem, Royal Ballet of Covent Garden, the Paris Opera Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Berlin Opera, San Diego Opera and many others. He played drum set for the ballets “e River” by Duke Ellington, “Fancy Free” by Bernstein, and the operas “Porgy and Bess” and “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny,” which won two Grammys for the LA Opera. He played on the Grammy-winning recording of “Ghosts of Versailles,” with Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, on the national tour of “Jekyll & Hyde” and on many film scores, including the first three “Rush Hour” movies, “e Flintstones” and “e Polar Express.” Amidst all his accomplishments and credits, Timm still found time to teach percussion at Citrus College and Idyllwild Arts Academy. Currently, along with playing with the LAPD Con- cert and Swing bands, Timm performs with the New West Symphony, the Pas- adena, Pacific, Glendale, Long Beach and Santa Barbara Symphonies, and the California Philharmonic. For hobbies, Timm says he likes sailing, and playing and leading drum circles. If you would like to release some energy and explore a fun and cre- ative way to communicate with others, you may want to join Timm at one of his drum circles at the Santa Cecilia Arts & Learning Center in Eagle Rock, Calif.
