Get the Facts about Insects

MosquitoBy Jacob 3-3

1. Mosquitoes can be found all over the world, even in Antarctica! No one is safe!

2. Mosquitoes don’t actually bite. They just suck your blood. They spit on your skin before they stick their nose in it. The poison in the spit makes us itch.

3. Mosquitoes bites can kill you in some countries. We just need to use bug spray in Minnesota.

Mosquitoes.I don’t like them.

Ask me why.

They jeer in my ear loud and clear.

They suck my blood and disappear

Leaving me with a big itchy bump on my rear!

They always interfere. They’re all over the atmosphere!

I like them.

Ask me why.

I like them best when they are not here; but,

Put them under a microscope and their big eyes appear!

When I’m done, there’s lots of cool body parts to smear!

Mosquitoes.

BAT-ter Up!• Bats hang upside down when they sleep. Hopefully, they don’t fall out of bed!• In China, a bat will bring you good luck.

If a bat got into the house, my grandpa would hit them with a tennis racket!

• Bats love to eat-Live Insects ;) especially mosquitoes! Yum! I’ll take mine with catchup please!

Please connect with your media specialist, to adapt this sample for your own class. I move my third graders into power point; but, you can accomplish the same objectives with Kid Pix.

As a media specialist, I start with Doug Wood’s book, “WINDIGO’S RETURN.”Do not tell them ahead of time it is a mosquito. I then share a mosquito string story from the “STORY VINE” by Anne Pellowski adapting it to fit the windigo. These two stories are captivating. I use mosquitoes as a shared model for the research project. I use the mosquito graphic organizer with books only: non-fiction and reference reviewing how to use an index, pairing up the students again for the research. As a special incentive: If I use their facts in a puppet show about the insect, they may be asked to be one of my puppeteers. I repeat this modeling with other insects and students may choose their own insect then for their power point.Again, check with your media specialist for books that are at the different reading levels on insects. Try facthound.com for kid friendly websites on insects. Most mosquito websites are below.Since most insects are at the bottom of the energy web, you can use this project as a base for your next science topic!.

As another lesson, I’m using “BUG FACES” by Nat’l Geo. Insect Photographer, Darlyne Murawski-Incredible Pictures and Poems. Pair this up with “BUG SCIENTISTS” by Donna Jackson. These books go along with “INSECTS ARE MY LIFE” by Megan McDonald. Try out the websites below for a webquest.
