FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THE PRESIDENTInclusive Workplaces Produce Success Stories for Employees

Once separated into “sheltered workshops,” people withintellectual and developmental disabilities are now valuedmembers of the local workforce and have developed last-ing friendships with their supervisors and co-workers. The Arc of Howard County supports the efforts of peoplewith intellectual and developmental disabilities to find jobswhere the work meets the individual’s needs and the individual meets the employer’s needs. Employment opportunities range according to the interests, skills andtalents of the job seekers, and The Arc staff members arealways trying to find the perfect fit.

The 2013-2014 Annual Report features the stories of four individuals and their successful employment experiences. While Cameron uses his technology skills to keep the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab running efficiently, Susieuses her humor and people skills to make sure everyone leaves Patrick’s Hair Design happy. Chris assists thekitchen at Wegmans by making sure they always have clean supplies, and David efficiently gets each car ready forservice appointments at Ourisman in Clarksville. The four are enthusiastic, proficient and hard-working employees.Their stories are also the stories of their supervisors and managers and co-workers, who provide natural supportsand an inclusive work environment. The companies where they work have strong ties to The Arc. Some of theirteam members serve now or have served on the The Arc Board of Directors, they are donors and sponsors of TheArc’s events and provide volunteers for various activities. We are grateful for their ongoing support.Elsewhere in the Annual Report, you will see highlights of the past year, including photos from our signature Choco-late Ball and other activities. Our contributors are listed, too. Seeing the happy faces of sponsors and all the namesof people who have made financial commitments to The Arc is very gratifying. Our schedule of upcoming activitiesis listed in the back of the Annual Report. We hope to see you at an event in the near future. Thank you for all you do to support The Arc and the people it serves.

David said, listing off the tasks of a normal day at work. Each Monday through Thursday morning David getspicked up by one of The Arc vans from his home at SwanPoint in Columbia and is brought over to Clarksville forhis shift. When he isn’t at work, David likes to go bowlingand watch baseball.“I watch the Orioles, not the Nationals, I like the Orioles,”David said. Vice President Mike Lewis, who hired David for Ouris-man, said that David began working in May and “so far,it couldn’t be any better.”“Ask yourself: ‘Why not hire a person with a developmen-tal disability?’” Lewis said. “There are many opportunitiesthat employers don’t consider people for because theysimply haven’t been asked before. We didn’t create a jobfor David. We had a very real need for someone in ourservice lane and then figured out how to make it workfor all involved.”David has a strong work ethic, he is friendly and respon-sible and while these made him a qualified candidate forthe Ourisman position, David, like any employee, neededsome onsite guidance. Employment staff members fromThe Arc were able to be there with him during those firstfew days. In addition to helping David learn his new re-sponsibilities, The Arc staff were able to help him meetand engage with his co-workers.As a result, not only has the position been working forDavid, it’s also been working well for his co-workers andthe dealership’s customers, according to Michael Catron,David’s direct supervisor.Lewis agrees. “David is always smiling and has a greatway about him. He has positive energy and never seemsto have a bad day. His positivity rubs off on other em-ployees as well as customers.”

I like working here,” David Gold, 39, said, standing next to a shiny red sports car. “I just like being here,

staying busy.”David works in the service department at OurismanChrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Clarksville, where he assiststhe service team and sometimes greets customers.“I clock in, I go out to the bay, sweep, clean off the win-dows and put plastic on the cars when they come in,”

On afternoons when Susie Dale gets dropped off atPatrick’s Hair Design in Columbia, she has the same

routine. “When I come in I get my check and then I check thelaundry and I fold up the aprons. Then I wash the clothesand put them back in the closet. Sometimes I sweep upfront, or where the people get their hair cut or wherever

it’s needed. I clean out the hair coloring bowls, I fold upthe towels and sometimes I organize the stuff in theback,” Susie explained.Jodie Gil, the owner of Patrick’s and a former memberof The Arc’s Board of Directors, hired Susie last winter tohelp out around the shop. She says Susie’s work hasbeen “excellent.”“She really is a great support to the shampoo staff andto the entire salon when the salon is very busy,” Gil said.“I just really enjoy having her here; she has really goodinstincts.”Gil said that Susie fits right in with the staff, in part be-cause of her great sense of humor. When not working, one of Susie’s favorite things to do istravel. She’s been to Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia,South Carolina and North Carolina, just to name a few,but Florida is a favorite because that’s where Disney’sAnimal Kingdom is located. When she’s not traveling todifferent states, Susie enjoys playing with her three-year-old niece, swimming and going to the mall with friendsright here in Maryland. In August, Patrick’s hosted Cuts & Cocktails, a benefit forThe Arc, and Susie was a volunteer at the fundraiser. Gilmade sure, of course, that Susie was able to get her hairdone before the event. When The Arc looked for a job that suited Susie, every-one knew she needed to be able to engage with otherpeople. Patrick’s is the perfect location for her. It is abustling place, and its emphasis on fashion pleases style-conscious Susie, too. Gil said she would encourage others who were consid-ering hiring someone with a developmental disability.“Teach the person, encourage them, communicate andgive them a shot,” she added.

Chris Hawxhurst, 50, has been working at the Weg-mans in Columbia since it opened two years ago. In

fact, he started by traveling to Hunt Valley with his co-workers for training beforehand, and strong relationshipsdeveloped between them and between The Arc Employ-ment team and Wegmans’ Human Resources staff.Chris enjoys his job at Wegmans, where he works in thedish room. “He is responsible for ensuring a steadystream of clean dishes, pots, pans and utensils to keepthe operation running smoothly,” according to EsmondMiranda, the sous chef at the store.Just like the chefs and sous chefs, Chris works in the“background” of the store to make sure nothing goeswrong and the food flow is steady. Chris doesn’t just dodishes, he also takes out the trash and recycling, keepingthe kitchen clean. To get to work, Chris takes public transportation from thehouse overlooking Lake Elkhorn in Columbia that heshares with a housemate, house manager and her dog. When he isn’t at work, Chris enjoys fishing on the lakeand spending time with his family and girlfriend, whosometimes plays computer games with him. Miranda, who worked with someone with a develop-mental disability at a past job, said that Chris has beenworking out well as a member of the kitchen staff. “Onething about Chris is if you ask him to do something, hedoes it,” Miranda added.Miranda works directly with Chris each day and said thatChris’ job coaches at The Arc have been really supportiveand are always available when needed.“Chris is always upbeat and happy when I visit him. Hehas never complained of having a bad day, or workingevery weekend,” Tina Lewis, his job coach at The Arc,said. “Chris likes making money, he’s mentioned to me

several times, Sunday pay is $2 more per hour.”Bonnie Cronin, Director of Employment and Day Serv-ices at The Arc, agrees with Lewis. “Out of the more than100 people that we support in Employment services,”she says, “no one takes more pride in their job, theirearnings or in being a part of a team, such as the oneat Wegmans, than Chris Hawxhurst.”

After a few minutes of chatting with CameronD’Aquila, 21, two things are certain: he is excited

about his job at The Johns Hopkins University AppliedPhysics Lab and he knows a whole lot about movies.Ask Cameron anything about a movie, new or old, andhe’ll probably know the answer. Ever want to know thecomposer behind the epic music in “Game of Thrones”and “Pacific Rim?” He knows it’s Ramin Djawadi. Howabout that Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed movie“Memento” was actually based on a short story writtenby his younger, lesser-known brother Jonathan? Well, that’s true, too.Cameron spends the majority of his day, both at workand at home, on the computer. When he’s in his officeat APL, he does a lot of clerical work, but it’s also his jobto make sure all of the computers have up-to-date virusprotection, check to ensure printers are in working con-dition, and help update documents. He even put on aPowerPoint presentation last year for 15 people.Howard Heuberger, who hired Cameron at APL, set outto hire an individual from The Arc because he was “dis-appointed in the lack of such employees at APL andwanted to demonstrate it could be done.”

He was right. Cameron began working at APL in Januaryof 2013, and a group of employees, known as “TeamCameron,” helped him get acclimated to his new position.Because Cameron had just graduated from high school,he did not have extensive job experience. The Arc’s Em-ployment staff spent time with him in the community, discovering his interests and strengths, and what hewould need to truly succeed on the job. When the “per-fect” job wasn't immediately found, The Arc worked withHeuberger at APL to create the job “perfect for Cameron.” Cameron, who hopes to become a filmmaker someday,is taking his next film class at Howard Community Col-lege this fall. He said that he knows how to use differentcomputer programs like iMovie, for fun, and Excel, to dohis job.“Cameron is one of only a few to hold an office job sinceThe Arc’s Employment Services began, so this was some-thing of a groundbreaking hire,” Heuberger said.“I’m relatively good with computers, I wouldn’t say I’man expert,” Cameron said. However, it would seem his “relatively good” understand-ing of technology was perfect for his position at APL.
