2 THE SERVANT SPIRIT

Know What You Believe and Why it Matters — Pastor EricEach person whether they recognize it or not has core values. A core value ofmost Minnesotan’s is “summers are short so get outside and enjoy the weather”.On a deeper level people have core values like:• I want to provide my children with as many opportunities as possible• I want to make my life meaningful and filled with purpose• People have core values about money and how they manage and use it orhow it uses them

We get our core values from our parents, our work place, the culture around us and elsewhere. It can be that we are not even fully aware of our core values. That’s why, knowing what you believe is so important because it drives what youdo and who you are becoming.

By now I hope you are aware that on October 2nd we will launch the BELIEVE: Think UAct UBe church theme. I’m not kidding when I say this may be the best chance you’ll ever have to intentionally reflect on your real core values as a follower of Jesus and how they impact your life and who you are actually becoming as a follower of Jesus.

You will hear more in September about how you can engage in what I believe willbe life changing for those who have a desire to grow in their faith. I do hope you’llconsider forming your own small group or leading a group of friends. There are resources available for both groups and individuals each Sunday in the Narthex

Do you really know what your core values and beliefs are? What would you like your faith to be like in 12 months or five years from now? What kind of legacy offaith would you like to leave for your children and grandchildren? These are BIG questions and we are about to embark on a God-inspired journey together.

WHAT YOU BELIEVE MAKES A DIFFERENCE!I’M EXCITED TO SEE YOU IN WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY!

Blessings, Pastor Eric

Do you have Spiritual Goals?from Pastor Melissa“Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:12All of us set goals in life! We want to graduate from high school, get a job, get ourown house etc. But have you set any goals in your spiritual life? Obviously we allwant a closer relationship with Jesus and want that relationship to fill our life withpeace, love, and joy even when life is difficult. But how do we work towards adeeper relationship with Jesus?Beginning Sunday October 2nd in worship we will start using the “Believe: Livingthe Story of the Bible to Become Like Jesus” curriculum. This Sunday morningworship experience and small group experience will help us to set some spiritualgoals and give us tools to deepen our faith journey. To begin setting some Spiritual Goals you may either take The Christian Life ProfileAssessment (a paper inventory) which is available to purchase at SOC, or if youhave a smartphone go to your APP store and download the free APP called “Believe”. The APP with take you through an inventory and show you which areasyou rate highly in (perhaps compassion and joy) and which areas you could grow in (maybe peace, patience or kindness). These resources will help you begin theBelieve journey. The second step will be to purchase the “Believe” hardcover book and read it before attending weekly worship or listening to the podcast. The “Believe” hardcover book is a compilation of scripture readings on each topic so you will bereading specific Bible Chapters every week that are about the weekly topic such asSalvation, Prayer, Joy or Gentleness.A third step would be to join or form a small group to discuss the chapter for theweek using the weekly discussion guide and sharing with others how this mightapply to our lives. I will be leading a weekly “Believe” discussion group Tuesday mornings from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. and Wednesday eveningsfrom 6:45 p.m.-7:45 p.m. These will be starting October 11th and 12th. Pleasecontact me if you are interested in being in one of these discussion groups. Othergroups are forming on other days of the week too. Let us press on toward the goalof knowing Jesus, so that his love can richly dwell in us!

Blessings, Pastor Melissa

Your Gifts to Servant of Christ Make A Difference! Each month I (Pastor Eric), highlight a ministry beyond our church that we support.Sometimes it’s a local ministry that we support directly like the Brooklyn Avenuesfor Homeless Youth Shelter or National Disaster relief help or some cool ministry ina faraway country helping people to have clean drinking water.

While the saying in politics is “all politics are local” that’s not true for the Christian faith. We are definitely part of a global church seeking to relieve sufferingand reach others for Christ. That’s why it’s so important to support a number of different types of ministry. It is a tangible reminder to us that not only locally but in our country and around the world there are brothers and sisters in Christ ingreat need.

This year in 2016, because of the generosity of so many we are able to supportthese ministries in the amount of $80,000. Over the last ten or eleven years wehave been able to show tangible love to others nearing $700,000-800,000. It isquite a testimony to how God is working through this congregation. Keep up thegreat work and growing generosity.

See you on the 14th!

Confirmation: The BasicsConfirmation is more than just coming to church every Wednesday night and hanging out with your friends or classmates. It’s an opportunity to learn what Jesusdid and how he wants you to live out your life through Him.Confirmation meets on Wednesday nights during the school year, and does notmeet whenever School District 11 is canceled. Below is the typical time schedulefor Wednesday evenings at Confirmation:

5:30-6:00 p.m. — Pizza and Games in the Fellowship Hall6:00-6:45 p.m. — Large Group in the Sanctuary6:45-7:30 p.m. — Small Group Time7:30-8:00 p.m. — Hang out, Games, Snacks, Music

Confirmation VolunteersI’m excited to say that we have reformatted our volunteering options in Confirmation. We’ve added a few crewsof volunteers that will focus on different aspects of our Confirmation Program. The Program Crew will be our LargeGroup Gurus — leading worship, activi-ties, etc. The Prayer Crew will collectprayer requests, pray with students, and give prayer resources to those whoneed resources. The Welcome andGames crew is the last crew that will engage the students in the FellowshipHall and Sanctuary with games and fun. They’ll lead a large group game, makesure everyone is feeling welcome, wanted and loved, and get kids havingfun with each other. If you are interestedin any of these crews, I’d love to talksome more! Listen to God’s directionfor your life and see if God is calling youto serve in the Junior High ministry!

Maybe This Year?Repeatedly, I am struck by how deeply people are touched by music. How music can communicate in a way nothing elsecan. How God can use music to bring healing and joy into people’s lives. Maybe this year you would like to participate inthis kind of ministry? Maybe this year you want to try something new? Maybe this year you want to experience a sense a belonging to a community? Maybe this year you want to make beautiful music? The Celebration Choir’s first choir rehearsal will be Monday, September 12th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the FellowshipHall. Our first Sunday will be on Sept 18th. You are welcome to join us — Maybe this year? The Contemporary Worship Team is busy gearing up for our new season of uplifting music. We will be learning and presenting new songs that go along with our “Believe” worship experience that begins in October. If you are interested inhearing the new songs on You tube, you can follow the links below:

Letting Christ Lead — Chicago Mission Trip 2016The Chicago Mission Trip was a Christ-filled experience for the entire group. Yourprayers and financial support enabled us to reconnect with the church we visitedlast year. It can best be described as a week filled with joy, tears, love, hugs, prayer, and thankfulness. More importantly, we felt Christ leading us in all we did.Thank you again from the entire group! You helped us be a blessing unto others.

THE SERVANT SPIRIT 11

outreach & fellowship events

Servant of Christ Quilting Bee!Thursday, September 22, at 10 a.m.the Quilting Ladies meet at church inthe Fellowship Hall to start makingquilts again for those in need. If youwould like to come and help, just“show up” any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. or call Sherri at763-464-2724 or Becky Panser at612-501-7722 for more details.Come when you can, leave when youneed to… whatever fits your schedule. If you can tie a knot… that is all thetalent you need! We take a break for noon lunch (which is provided) and an afternoon coffee break. We have some good laughs and wonderful fellowship! We meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month during the school year, unless it falls on or near a holiday.

The quilts are blessed at Worship Services on a Sunday in October and in February before they are given to the homeless youth/families in the AnokaHennepin School district and “Bags of Love” in Anoka County. We also reachout to “North County Community Health Care Center” (which covers the counties of Stillwater, Hubbard, Beltrami, and Lake of the Woods in NorthernMN). The baby and lap quilts are given to “High Risk Moms”, Hospice andHome Health Care in Northern Minnesota or where ever there is a need.

This year quilts were also given to “Gap Filler Ministries” located in Lakevillefor a fund raiser to go to Cuba. Pastor Dave Hanson and interpreter PastorJohnny are in Cuba September 7th-14th, ministering at 5 different churches;giving biblical teaching during the day and preaching for services at night. The people there are hungry for spiritual and biblical teaching. They haveasked prayers for: this outreach, physical strength, Pastor’s Dave and Johnny,(that their voices “hold out” as they will be speaking a lot) and that there willbe a revival there in Cuba. What a praise that would be!
