With the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games fast approaching, Glasgow Sport are offering a fantastic opportunity for you to play a key role in shaping and supporting sport within the city. You could have the chance to be involved in creating a long lasting legacy that Glasgow can be proud of.

The main aim of the Glasgow Sport Young Leaders programme is to maximise your potential as a volunteer by providing you with opportunities that will increase your knowledge, experiences and enthusiasm of sport.

Next Steps . . . Recruitment for the Glasgow Sport Young Leaders programme will open on Thursday 29th August.

Applicants are required to submit a completed application form (FORM A), including a statement from the person who is nominating you (FORM B) by Friday 20th September. Please submit a passport photograph along with your application.

Selected applicants will be invited to attend an informal group interview. Applicants will be notified whether they have been successful or not in gaining a place on the programme.

Please note: Entry onto the programme can only be gained via a nomination - please see criteria.

Criteria To be eligible to apply for the programme, you must:

• Be 14 - 18 years old• Be a resident of Glasgow or volunteering within Glasgow • Volunteering on a regular basis (minimum of four hours a month)• Be nominated by a suitable person, such as an Active Schools Co-ordinator, Club Coach, Sport Leaders Awards Co-ordinator, Sports Development Officer, Health & Physical Activity Co-ordinator, Youth Worker, PE/Guidance or Head Teacher• Have shown a commitment to volunteering within sport, such as: Coaching (Assistant Coach, Head Coach, Fitness Coach) Administration (Treasurer, Committee Member, Secretary, Chairperson) Leadership (Youth Club Leader, Scouts, Girl Guides, After School Leader) Officiating (Referee, Umpire, Line Judge).

Expectations Applicants will be expected to:• Be available for our

induction programme

during October school

holiday week • Volunteer at a minimum

of one Glasgow Sport

event• Attend monthly Young

Leader team nights

Nominator InformationAll applicants for the Glasgow Sport Young Leaders Programme are required to be nominated for the programme by a suitable person, such as:

• an Active Schools Co-ordinator• an Area Service Officer – Health and Physical Activity Officer and Youth Services• a Sports Leadership Awards Co-ordinator • a Sports Club/ Club Coach• a Sports Development Officer – Target Sports Development/ Club, Coach and Volunteer (CCV)• a PE/Guidance or Head Teacher.

Please ensure that the applicant you are nominating is eligible for the programme, the criteria for applying is as follows:

• Applicants must be 14 - 18 years old• Currently volunteering in sport (at least four hours per month).

You are able to nominate more than 1 young person.

Please complete Form B which MUST be submitted along with the application form (FORM A) by Friday 20th September.

Highlights from the 2012/13 Programme….Now in its fourth year the GSYL programme has been internally rated as equivalent to a Higher Qualification against the Scottish Credit Qualification Framework. Last year Young Leaders volunteered at the Glasgow Disability Sport launch event, the Scottish International Badminton Championships, World Premier Club Challenge Netball tournament, the Commonwealth Conference as well as taking a lead in delivering sports taster sessions at Go Yellow Day at Bellahouston Park. Young Leaders were also involved in the launch of the Coach Core programme where they delivered a presentation to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Young leaders have been involved in the development of Glasgow’s Sport Spaces project.

Glasgow Sport Young Leaders developed a Culture and Education Programme which was delivered to athletes at the 2013 UCI World Junior Track Championships and World Youth Netball Championships.

Glasgow Sport Young Leaders were awarded at Glasgow Sport’s Volunteer Recognition event.
