Vocabulary Quiz
• Define the following terms on a separate piece of paper
–Elastic–Contract–Voluntary–Involuntary–Axis

Muscular System
•What does it do?–Makes all movements possible•Move all body parts•Heart beat•Breathing•Digestion
![Page 4: Get Out Your Vocab for the Muscular System](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/568165a6550346895dd88caf/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Muscular System•What are the main functions?– produce heat• Shivering – muscles rubbing together
–Produce movement•Writing, breathing
–Maintain posture• Sitting up straight
![Page 5: Get Out Your Vocab for the Muscular System](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/568165a6550346895dd88caf/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Muscular System•What are the types of muscle?– Voluntary you contract when you want
to move (skeletal muscle). Movement is not automatic–Involuntary contract automatically
(stomach, intestines, heart) movement is automatic….you cannot tell your heart or stomach to stop
![Page 6: Get Out Your Vocab for the Muscular System](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/568165a6550346895dd88caf/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Muscular System•What are tendons?–Connect muscle to bone–When a muscle contracts the tendon
moves the bone–Why not just connect muscle to bone??• Tendons are stronger and take the pressure off the
muscle so you are less likely to tear a muscle
![Page 7: Get Out Your Vocab for the Muscular System](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062501/568165a6550346895dd88caf/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Muscular System•What are the types of muscle
tissue?– Skeletal/ Striated voluntary, provide movement
of the body–Visceral/Smooth involuntary, form the walls of
the internal organs of the body (digestive tract, respiratory passages, walls of blood vessels) –Cardiac involuntary, forms the walls of the heart

Muscular System• What are the basic movements of skeletal
muscle?– Adduct: moving a body part toward the midline of the
body– Abduct: moving a body part away from the midline of the
body– Extend: straightening a body part or moving it away from
the body– Flex: bending a body part toward the body– Rotate: turning a body part on its axis– Open and close openings: sphincters, like the urethra or
esophagus

Muscular System• What are the basic movements of skeletal
muscle?– Supinate: turn palm of the hand upward
medially , sole of the foot upward medially, or lie facing upward (supine)–Pronate: turn palm of the hand downward
medially, sole of the foot downward medially, lie facing downward (prone)

Muscular System• What are the basic movements of skeletal
muscle?– Inversion: turn the sole of the foot inward so
that the medial border of the foot is elevated– Eversion: turn the sole of the foot outward so
that the lateral border of the foot is elevated
