Get Online Week 2016 – iPlay Session Plan

At the moment everything is online! From printing out your boarding passes before you go on holiday to taxing your car to applying for a new job. It’s even happening in the world of games! Traditional games like Monopoly have moved from table top to tablet and iPad as playing games with friends online grows in popularity. You may have even heard of some games like Candy Crush or Farmville on websites such as Facebook!

iPlay

1 Introduction: In this session we are going to look at easy to play games – digitally. These may have specific websites and/or apps such as Solitaire. Alternatively, you may have to sign up to a Facebook account to take part in certain games or even have specific consoles.

2 Game Websites: For quick access to fun games, using game websites is the easiest option. These will often let you play a game without having to sign-up or create an account using your personal information. As they are accessed through a website any device that is connected to the internet can play the game.

Task See if you can access a gaming website such as www.miniclip.com or www.friv.com. These are ideal to know if you have young grandchildren!

3 Games on Facebook: Another way you can play games online is by using Facebook. Facebook is a social media site that houses games ranging from running your own farm in Farmville to playing 8 ball pool. All of these games are free but do contain elements of the game that cost money e.g. extra lives or boosts. You may have already been invited to play these games by some of your friends on Facebook as adding more friends to the game will make the game easier to play as you can help each other through the game.

Task If you have a Facebook account, log-in to your account. Down the left-hand side of the screen you should see a list of different apps available in Facebook. Look for ‘Games’ and left-click it. In the top right-hand corner, you’ll see a search function. Type ‘Candy Crush’ into the search function. Have a go at Candy Crush. Note: If you become addicted, it’s not our fault!

4 Apps: If you are using a tablet, either Android or iPad, you can download Apps that are games from your App Store - App Store or Google Play. Most games within the different app stores are free, although they do offer paid-for options similarly to how they do on Facebook.

Task Go to your App store and search for ‘Solitaire’. It should be free. Download and try to complete the card game.

5 Games Consoles: Finally, we are going to look at games consoles. There are many different games consoles. You may have heard of PlayStation, X Box or the Wii. These consoles plug into a television and offer games such as Fifa and Minecraft to those that play them. If you haven’t heard of them, ask somebody under the age of 12 what they’d like for Christmas!

Task It’s Get Online Week. It’s time for X Box bowling. Margaret Bibby, who attends Startpoint on a Friday, is the 2-time, current X Box bowling champion. Could it be you this year?
