SUMMER LEARNING SUMMER LEARNING FUN WEEKLY PLANSPRESCHOOL & PRE-K • GET MOVING

ACTIVITY Let’s create our own bowling alley! Gather some recycled materials such as empty milk gallons, creamer bottles, ketchup bottles or cereal boxes. Ask your child to line the materials up in a row and practice rolling a ball down the alley. How many of the “pins” can you knock down?

LEARNING SKILLS Creativity and Discovery, Gross Motor Skills

Materials Recycled materials, ball

Get Moving activities are designed to either engage your child’s full body in a physical activity to start the day with a jump, OR to start the day planning for play, a critical area of development in organizational thinking.

Get moving

ACTIVITY Encourage your little one to move as fast as the following modes of transport: • a car • a plane • a scooter • a train

You could even use a stopwatch to time how long it takes your child to get from point A to point B. Try again and see if he or she can beat the original time.

SUMMER LEARNING SUMMER LEARNING FUN WEEKLY PLANSPRESCHOOL & PRE-K • GET MOVING

ACTIVITY Let’s enjoy a game of red light, green light. Encourage your little one to run as fast as he or she can. Then your child could try walking slowly or hopping to get to the finish line.

LEARNING SKILLS Cognitive and Mathematics, Gross Motor Skills

ACTIVITY Try moving and turning your body into a bridge! Ask your child to try the belly-side-up and then belly-side-down versions of this pose. Take turns with your little one; one person can be the bridge and one person can be the boat traveling under the human bridge.

LEARNING SKILLS Gross Motor Skills, Creativity and Discovery

ACTIVITY Let’s have a jumping-jack contest. Encourage your little one to see how many jumping jacks he or she can do. Try it together and count how many you both can do.

SUMMER LEARNING SUMMER LEARNING FUN WEEKLY PLANSPRESCHOOL & PRE-K • GET MESSY

Get Messy is a section designed for your child to engage in sensory play. Sensory play allows learners to make sense of the world around them by taking in as much information as possible from an experience by using as many intake receptors as possible on their bodies. It allows information to absorb better and with more meaning.

ACTIVITY Let’s enjoy some waterplay! Outside today, bring a bucket filled with water, a small plastic cup and either a paper-towel tube, part of a pool noodle, a plastic straw or a plastic funnel. Encourage your little one to transfer water from one place to another using a tube. Reflect and discuss with your child. Which tube transferred the water the fastest? What about the slowest?

LEARNING SKILLS Science and Nature, Creativity and Discovery

Materials Bucket, plastic cup, objects in the shape of a tube

ACTIVITY Let’s enjoy some fun uses for ring-shaped cereal! Ask your child to sort the cereal by color. Glue the cereal onto a piece of paper for a fun creation. You could also try putting a straw through the hole of the cereal and try to wheel it across the table.

LEARNING SKILLS Creativity and Discovery, Cognitive and Mathematics

ACTIVITY Gather some nuts and bolts from your toolbox. Ask your child to practice screwing the pieces together. Once finished, ask your little one if he or she would like to paint or stamp using the pieces. Enjoy creating a beautiful masterpiece together.

LEARNING SKILLS Creativity and Discovery

Materials Nuts, bolts, paper, paint

ACTIVITY Let’s explore with some bubbles! You could make your own solution with dish soap and water. Try to see how big you can make the bubbles. How far can the bubbles travel?

ACTIVITY Let’s try to make a wheel and axle. Find two bottle caps of the same size. Ask your child to add some modeling dough to each cap to make a wheel. Next, using a plastic straw, help your child to push each end of the straw into the middle of the cap. Hooray! You’ve made your own wheel and axle. Encourage your child to explore and see if it will roll and how far it will roll.

LEARNING SKILLS Cognitive and Mathematics, Creativity and Discovery

Materials Bottle caps, modeling dough, plastic straw

Get Focused is a time of day devoted to learning a specific skill. It is a time that is best for children to engage independently or with their parent to fully concentrate and build new skills through hands-on lessons.

Get Focused

ACTIVITY Let’s learn about how houses are built. Enjoy reading or listening to How a House Is Built by Gail Gibbons. Once finished, encourage your child to find materials around your house to build his or her own house. You could also ask him or her to locate some of the objects that were mentioned in the story.

ACTIVITY Ask your child if he or she would like to explore with some ramps. You can make a ramp using a piece of cardboard. Search around the house for other items that could be used as a ramp. Try to roll a ball down the ramp. Ask your child to find some other objects that could roll down the ramp. Which items roll the fastest and farthest?

ACTIVITY Let’s do some breathing and stretching. Encourage your child to take a deep breath, watching his or her belly go out and in with each inhale and exhale. Have your child try to hold the inhale for three seconds and the exhale for five seconds. While completing the breathing technique, have your child stretch his or her arms high above the head and stand on tippy toes to extend the body as tall as possible. Relax, and repeat three times.
