Nature detective
Start exploring the wildlife of a hedge near you – you could take notes, sketches
or photos of what you find. See which of these
hedge residents you can spot…
Bugs abound!
Hedges provide shelter and food for over 24,000 species of
creepy-crawlies in the British Isles! For a closer look, hold a container
under a hedge and gently shake the branches to catch any critters living there. Once you’ve finished looking
at your bugs, take them back to where you found them and
set them free!
Hedge hiders
Larger animals, such as birds, hedgehogs and voles, use hedgerows as ‘corridors’, which let them hunt for
insects and berries whilst staying safely out of sight. Some of these creatures may be harder to spot, as they only come out at night. But look closely,
and you might find some clues they’ve left behind…
REMEMBER Always let an adult know when you’re going exploring, and be careful not to disturb nests or burrows!
