Germany (1919-1932) Deutsches ReichThe Weimar period was a time of great transition in the type and style of German postage stamps.

Early in the period, Germany continued its use of the long-running Germania series.

In 1923, rampant hyperinflation led to frequent issuance of increasingly higher-value stamps in an attempt to adjust to rising costs.

Finally, following the hyperinflation period, Germany began issuing a much wider variety of stamps, taking advantages of advances in printing technology and artistic design. This shift saw the introduction of stamps of more complex colors and designs and of better print quality.

On 1 December 1923, German currency was revalued, marking the end of the hyperinflation era. The new currency (Rentenmark) replaced the old Mark at a conversion rate of 1 Rentenmark = 1 Billion (in the U.S. numbering convention, 1 Trillion) Mark. The Rentenmark was then replaced with the Reichsmark in September / October 1924 at a 1:1 rate.
