Introduction
if anyone ask me what's the best thing I found in Germany? I would say the first thing is German language ! It attracted me to it indeed. I learned German on my own and later on joined B2/C1 course directly. The language trainer named me "Autodidakt" / Autodidact (self learner)! I loved it !!! For some it is difficult or hard. Actually it is not, if you understand it is all about understanding the logic of the German Grammar. This article could help you with it. I went through from A1 (basic) to C1/C2 Level. Most of the important German Grammar rules you find until B2/C1. I'm glad that I could put all those important things in one document all by myself. And, it is indeed putting the best from all the German Grammar books that I read. My time does not permit me to explain every topic in detail , but I put my best effort to share my knowledge wherever it was possible and provided links. For example the topic "Dativ" or "AUDUSO" or similar kind of topics where I personally had to reread.
For whom this document can be useful?
* You are a beginner and started learning German or joined a German language class. * You have a language pal with whom you improve. That means you can take up individual topic from this document and converse or discuss to improve your skill. * You already learned German let's say until B1 or B2 Level (Middle Level) and you can navigate quickly that you want from this article. * You speak English and looking for some explanation in English * You are a self learner like I am , and confident to achieve the target on your own. You can see the section "Tips" for related tips

For detailed explanation follow the links. The '*' indicates that this is the tricky part in the beginning that needs to be understood. Nominativ, Akkusativ and Dativ
Below is an example and/or a way to identify Nominativ, Akkusativ and Dativ from a sentence. Fragen mit wer, wem+, was+ Example: Ich habe einen Freund. Wer? The answer is "ich" (a subject) --- It is Nominativ The question to ask here is who has/have?/Wer hat? The answer is a Nominativ. In this case it is "ich". Habe -> a verb Was+subjekt? - wenn objekt gibt, denn das ist Akkusativ Objekt The question to ask here is "what +Nominativ has?/was habe ich ? (Ich in this case)" The answer is "Akkusativ Objekt". Example: Meiner Mutter hat einen Geschenk fr Ihrer Schwester gegeben Dativ Objekt The question to ask to know the " Dativ Objekt" is who has + Nomainativ? / Wem hat + Nominativ? Wem+Subjekt gibt eine Antwort, denn ist das Dativ objekt
Dativ
This is my simple explanation for Dativ : Let's start with an example. Please keep that books on the table. What is "on" and why did we use "on" ? "on" is a preposition and using "on" you inform the listener the exact position. It is the same thing with Dativ. So, you just initially observe or collect or understand the nouns after " Prpositionen mit Dativ " Prepositions, in addition observe and understand how an Article changed here. Examples : .... auf dem Tisch ... or.... aus meiner Seite... The first thing you do is to check the real Gender of "Tisch" in Dictionary or on the Internet. It is "der Tisch" likewise it is "die Seite". Second thing is that the articles change if it is a singular Dativ noun or a plural Dativ noun. Recommended is "canoo" APP.
-
Prpositionen mit Dativ
The given below are called the Prepositions of Dativ. Ab, aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu The Rule to remember them easily is to sing a song ! Aus.. bei .. nach .. seit .. von .. mit .. dem zu.. s t e h e n immer m i t Dativ. To put it all together the Prepositions with Dativ, we have : aus, bei, nach, seit, von, mit, vor, unter, zu, ab, an Prepositions with Akkusativ, we have : auf, durch, fr, gegen, ohne, ber and um Dativ or Akkusativ : an, in, auf, neben, ber, unter, vor, hinter Link for Dativ Prepositions: http://www.mein-deutschbuch.de/lernen.php?menu_id=83 Merkblatt im Dativ: Mekblatt means to remember something. Below is the technique to remember the position of Dativ and Akkusativ. Das Dativobjekt benennt meistens eine Person und das Aukkusativobjekt eine Sache Wenn beide Ergnzungen Nomen sind, steht normalweise : Zuerst das Dativobjekt, dann das Akkusativobjekt An example for remembering Dativ: Ich habe mir eine neue Schuhe gewnscht. The meaning of this sentence is, "I wished for a new shoes." So, for whom the shoes wished ? "myself"/ "mir" and What did I wish for myself? "The shoes" .
-
Personalpronomen im Dativ

du er sie es wir ihr Sie/sie
mir
dir ihm ihr ihm uns euch Ihnen/ihnen
Merkblatt zur Adjektivdeklination Situation: Let's say there is a word and without any article and the question is whether that word is a Maskulin or Feminine or Neutral or ?
Example: Zurckkommen ist trennbaren Verb.
-
Direkte Frage: Wie gefllt es dir in Deutschland? Wie ist Dein Leben in Deutschland?

andererseits gibt er das Geld mit vollen Hnden aus.
Dieses Hotel gefllt mir nicht. Es is zwar billig, aber viel zu schmutzig.
Mal putzt er das Haus,
mal tut er es nicht.
N - Deklination
This topic needs some good practice. Well, it is all about adding an 'n' at the end of a Noun (indeed to singular Noun mostly), with some exceptional rules. For example: 1) Der Affe (Affe is Monkey, singular and its gender here is Masculine). So, with the exception of rule of N-Deklination it is der Affen.
-
You monkey ! - > Du Affen ! 2) Der Lwe (Lwe is lion, singular and its gender here is Masculine). So, with the exception of rule of N-Deklination it is der Lwen. This rule mostly applies to a masculine singular noun ending with a syllable 'e'. Some examples where N-Deklination applies are: Der Bulle, Der Kollege, Der Pole, Der Psychologe, also Der Bauer, Der Doktorand etc.
Genitiv
It means possessive in English. That's Apostrophe " 's". Something/someone belongs to something/someone. Example : My brother's car (singular) or My brothers' business (plural) With Indefinite Article
Maskulin
Feminine Neutral
Eines Vaters
Einer Mutter Eines Kindes
Rules: It should be noted in the above examples the ending was either 's' or 'es'. Maskulin and Neutral will take either 's' or 'es'.
Genitiv in Verbal: For the purpose of clarity in verbal it is mostly with 'von' to show possession. Examples: Julias Eltern (can be used in verbal) Die Eltern von Julia (Preferred way in verbal)
Base Form Singular (in Genitiv)
Plural (in Genitiv)
Der Vater Des Vaters Der Vter
Die Mutter Der Mutter Der Mtter
Das Kind Des Kindes Der Kinder
-
Wegen .. Trotz .. Whrend
Wegen + Genitiv (mostly in written) and Wegen + Dativ (mostly in verbal) Examples: * Wegen meines kranken Bruders bleibe ich zu Hause (der Bruder is base form). * Trotz der vielen Fehler in Grammatik schrieb der Schler eine gut Note (Die Fehler is plural and base form, and die Schler is plural and base form). * Frher sprach man whrend des Essens nicht (Das Essen is base form) It should be noted that the word after Wegen, Trotz and Whrend takes either Genitiv or Dativ. To avoid mistakes while writing or speaking the question to ask is, is the word after Wegen, Trotz and Whrend is a singular or plural?
The below chart is to be fixed in mind and it is not at all that difficult. Rule for changing Reflexivpronomen im Akkusativ and Dativ. 1) Wenn das reflexiv Verb keine weitere Akkusativ-Ergnzung hat, steht das Reflexivpronomen im Akkusativ. Example : Ich freue mich auf Weihnachten or Er freut sich auf Reise.
-
So, with the Reflexiv Verb " (sich) Freuen / freue or freut" is not in need of any extra information. Freuen means happy. I am happy for something. It means mich and sich are Reflexivpronomen im Akkusativ. The verb "freue / freut" does not need further explanation or descrpition. Happy for? Weihnachten or Reisen. 2) Wenn das reflexiv Verb eine weitere Akkusativ-Erganzung hat, steht das Reflexivpronomen im Dativ . Example : Im morgens putze ich mir die Zhne und dusche ich mich. "putze" here means "to brush". So, there is any explanation or description required for this Verb. To Brush What? 3) Finally! Im Akkusativ und im Dativ haben die Reflexivpronomen dieselben Formen wie die Personalpronomen. Exception / Ausnahme : sich (Singular and Plural)
Personalpronomen im Akkusativ
Reflexivpronomen im Akkusativ
Personalpronomen im Dativ
Reflexivpronomen im Dativ
Mich dich sie/ihn/es uns euch Sie/sie
mich dich sich uns euch sich
mir dir ihr / ihm / ihm uns euch Ihnen / ihnen
mir dir sich uns euch sich
# Note: It is said that whenever you come across a Verb or a new Verb or learning German Verbs do try to remember the Preposition of a Verb. Below are some examples you see in Dictionary or on Internet : 1) zu Dat. berreden (Dat. means Dativ and "zu" is the Prepostition) 2) an Dat. sterben (Dat. means Dativ and "an" is the Preposition) 3) fr Akk. streiten (Akk. means Akkusativ "fr" is the Preposition)
Comparison..Komparativ..und..Superlative
Two Forms of comparison are : Komparativ and Superalativ When we use comparison we can put it before a Noun or as a Predicate of Verb normally at the end. Note: "Schn" is a bare adjective
-
Komparitiv und Superlativ vor einem Nomen Komparitiv beim Verb als Predikat
* Die schne Jahreszeit (Schn+e, called Adjektiv Endungen and no comparision used) * Die schnere Jahreszeit (Comparative, in German Komparitiv, base Adjective schn +er and the ending rule "Adjektiv Endungen" i.e "e" at the end) * Die schnste Jahreszeit (Superlative, in German Superlativ, base Adjective schn + st and the ending rule "Adjektiv Endungen" i.e "e" at the end )
* Im Mai ist es schn (base Adjective schn at the end. No comparison) * Im Mai ist es schner (base Adjective schn +er, a Comparitive, Komparativ ) * Im Main ist es am schnsten (base Adjective schn, using "am" + sten. It is simplest and always with "am" )
more..than...Kompartiv Adjektive + als In English we use "more" and "than" to compare something. For example, " She is taller than him." Like that : Der Rotwein is lter als der Weiwein. If you put a "," Comma before "als" it turns to be a "Nebensatz" but not a Kompartiv / Comparative of any two things. So, it's this way "Der Rotwein ist lter, als ich dachte" (The red Wein is older as I guessed or thought ) Note: "alt" is a bare adjective. There are some exceptions to some Adjectives when there are used in Comparative and Superlative which has to be learned. So, "alt" changed to "lt+er ". Some other forms of Comparative: * genauso/so + Grundform + wie Example : Dein Balkon ist genauso gro wie meiner. * anders / anderer, anderes, andere + als Example : Die neue Wohnung ist ganz anders geschnitten als die alte. * Je mehr...desto/umso besser Je + Komparativ...desto / umso + Komparativ In English it is, "the more... ,... the more" in a sentence. Example : Je eindeutiger die Signale sind, desto / umso besser verstehen wir sie.
-
Note : die Signale -> is referred by 'sie' in the latter sentence.

-
Passiv mit Modalverben
Rule: 1) Das Modalverb steht in position 2 und der Infinitiv Passiv am Ende. 2) Der Infinitiv Passiv wird mit dem Partizip II + "werden" gebildet. Paritizip II means Past Participle in English. Some examples of Past Participle are: look (Verb) -> looked (Past Participle) see (Verb) -> seen (Past Participle) And, "Modalverb" means Modal Verbs (can, could, shall, should etc) Examples in the below Table
Modalverb Satz im Passiv Infinitiv Passiv
1. Viele Dorfbewohner
mussten
in Sicherheit
gebracht werden.
2. Ein Mann musste Ins Spital eingelieft werden.
3. Gestern Abend konnte er zum Glck entlassen werden.
4. Deshalb muss man viel gearbeitet werden.
Subjeklose Passiv .. Passive without a Subject Verben ohne Subjekt bilden ein Infinitiv Passiv. Das Verb steht immer in der 2 Position. Das Verb muss eine aktive Ttigkeit ausdrcken. In the below Table it is important to note the words in Bold. For example : Perfekt - ist - geholfen worden and Perfekt - hat - geholfen werden mssen.
Passiv
Passiv
Prsens Ihm wird von mir
geholfen. Ihm muss von mir geholfen werden.
Prteritum Ihm wurde von mir
geholfen. Ihm musste von mir geholfen werden.
Perfekt Ihm ist von mir
geholfen worden.
Ihm hat von mir geholfen werden mssen.

Relativsatz
Rule: Relativsatz beschreiben eine Sache oder eine Person aus dem Hauptsatz genauer. Sie folgen meistens gleich nach der Sache oder der Person, die sie beschreiben. If you are from Computer Programming background like C or Java it is quite similar to one main concept in that. For example in C Programming we use "Address and/or Pointer Variables". Why do we use it in C? We declare it and Compiler points to the declared Variable. Or one simple example I can say is - You have a family name and what does this family name points to or refers to? Yes, your family or family members you are associated with. So, in Relativsatz the Relativpronomens (Relative Pronoun) points to what you said in the main sentence. Below is the table that shows which "Relativpronomen" is to be used in a Sentence when we build a Relativsatz. Observe the table from top to bottom. For example, in Singular , watch how the "der" in Nominativ changed to "dessen" in Genitiv. The example sentences make you understand its usage further.
Singular Maskulin Neutral Feminine
Plural
Nominativ der das die die
Akkusativ den das die die
Dativ dem dem der denen
Genitiv dessen dessen deren deren
Example Sentences: Der Mann, den ich gestern gesehen habe, kommt aus Indien. The "den" points to or informs "der Mann". Why did we use "den" but not "dessen" or "dem" ? Let's say you wrote a "Relativsatz" sentence and used "der" instead of "den". You can ask this question. Wer kommt aus Indien? Der Mann (Nominitaiv). Wen haben Sie gestern gesehen? The answer or word is in Akkusativ. Wen -> Akkusativ If it were in Dativ the question would be, "Mit wem hast Du gesprochen?" The answer or word is in Dativ "dem" . Wem -> Dativ. Some Exaamples : 1) Kannst du mir das Buch ausleihen, das wir lesen sollen? 2) Kennst du die jungen Leute, die dort drben auf der Bank sitzen? 3) Dort kommt ein Taxi, mit dem Sie nach Hause fahren knnen ! ein Taxi or das Taxi. 4) Die Freunde, mit deren unsere Kinder spielen, wohnen im Haus gegenber.
-
4th is a Genitiv Example 5) Ruf doch Hr. Schmitz an , dessen Telefonnummer ich dir gegeben habe. Dessen - > Herr Schmitzs Telefonnummer (The telephone number of a male) Note for Genitiv : Example : Wir verstehen die Sprache, deren Klang ganz anders ist, nicht. 'deren' is a Genitiv Relativpronomen and there will not be any Article before the Noun.
Konjuktiv II
It is Auxiliary in English ('Could' instead of 'Can' and 'Would' instead of 'will' ). In German Konjuktiv II is used for Hflichkeit und Etikette (Politeness and Etiquette).
Sein (Prteritum : waren) Haben (Prteritum : hatten)
"waren" in Konjuktiv II "hatten" in Konjuktiv II
Ich wre ich htte
Du wrst du httest
er / sie / es wrt er / sie / es htte
Wir wren wir htten
Ihr wrt ihr httet
sie / Sie wren sie / Sie htten
Some more Examples werden (Present Tense) -> wurden (Past Tense of werden) -> wrden (in Konjuktiv II) So, for example "er wrde ..." is in Konjunktiv II for 3rd person Singular knnen (Modalverb) -> kannten (Past Tense of knnen) -> knnten (in Konjuktiv II) So, for example "Sie knnten.." is in Konjuktiv II for 3rd person Plural. When do you use it? Some examples are : 1. Something un real is 2. For any wish 3. To say there is some possibility for something Note: In most cases we can use using "wrden" Form + Infinitive (in present time) Examples: Er wrde reisen (or ) Ich wrde schlafen
-
Konjuktiv II in Vergangenheit Formation: 1) "waren" in Konjuktiv II or "hatten" in Konjuktiv II + Partizip II (Past Participle) Examples: Ich htte geschrieben. Sie wre geblieben. This is some basic usage of Konjuktiv II. There is some more from this topic. Konjuktiv II Verganheit (Passiv) An Example for its formation
Konjuktiv II von "sein"
Partizip II Worden
Ich Wre gerne informiert Worden
Konjuktiv II Verganheit (Modalverb) An Example for its formation
Konjuktiv II von "haben"
Infinitiv Vollverb Infinitiv Modalverb
Ich htte gehen mssen
Er htte sagen sollen
Als...Ob...As..If This is something we can discuss. In English we use "as..if" to denote something which is not real or unbelievable. He writes so as if he is a writer ! Er spricht Deutsch, als ob er Deutsch wre (He speaks German as if he is German)

Note : The Verb is always placed at the end in this because it is Temporal Nebenstze. An Example is the usage of "Nachdem" : Nachdem ich den ganzen Tag am Computer gearbeitet hatte, taten mir die Augen weh.
Modalverbhnliche Verben
It actually means to say that the below Verb formation equals to a Modal Verb. The below examples clear it out. 1) Sein + zu + Infinitiv Note: "ist or sind or war or waren etc" are all the forms of "Sein". Example : Der Prozess mit dieser Software Entwicklung ist zu berlegen. The sentence means (in Modal Verb) , "Der Prozess mit dieser Software Entwicklung muss berlegt werden". 2) Haben + zu + Infinitiv Example: Die Regierung hat die Arbeitnehmer besser zu schtzen. The sentence means (in Modal Verb), "Die Regierung muss die Arbeitnehmer besser schtzen". Lassen + Infinitiv This kind of formation is somewhat similar to the above. Example : Man lsst die Mitarbeiter entscheiden. The sentence actually means, "Man erlaubt den Mitarbeitern zu entscheiden"
Partizip als Adjektiv
This is one of my favorite ! It seems tricky but it is not at all. It is all about to consider a Past Participle as an Adjective. Yes, we find the similar usage in English too. Note: Some examples of Past Participle are: look (Verb) -> looked (Past Participle) see (Verb) -> seen (Past Participle) To understand Relativsatz see the section "Relativpronomen" above.
-
Example : Let's say you have a Relativsatz like, "Die Zuschauer leiden mit bei einem Sturm, der gnadenlos tobt". The "tobt" is a Verb comes from the base Verb 'toben' and this verb says it is of present time. So, we transform it into "Partizip als Adjektiv". It becomes so, "Die Zuschauer leiden mit bei einem gnadenlos tobenden Sturm ". How is the formation of "tobenden" ? It is formed so, "toben+d+en" ('d' based on Parizip I rule. For simplicity think of it for present time (Active) and 'en' is based on the rule of Adjectiv Endungen for Dativ. See the section Adjectiv Endungen for further information) So, it is called Partizip I + Adjektivendung. Partizip II + Adjektivendung Example : Let's say you have a Relativsatz like, "Alle feiern gemeinsam ein Bordfest, das lange geplant worden ist" (This sentence indicates it is in Passiv i.e. Present Perfect Passive. See the section Passiv Konjugation mit Verben ) So, we transform it into "Partizip als Adjektiv". It becomes so, "Alle feiern gemeinsam ein lange geplantes Bordfest" What was changed in the above sentence? 'das' , 'worden' and 'ist' are skipped and only 'es' was added to 'geplant' because it is based on the rule of "Adjectiv Endungen". So, it is called Partizip II + Adjectivendung.
Indefinitpronomen
In English we use -- none/no one or anyone, someone etc. like that is this chart Example : * I spoke to someone in the train this morning and he said etc... * Ich habe jemand im Zug getroffen ( Jemand is in Nominativ ) and another example * Sorry! meine Frau ist jetzt beschftigt. Sie spricht mit jemandem ins Telefon (Jemandem is in Dativ because it is after 'mit'. 'mit' is a Dativ Preposition )
Nominativ man / einer Niemand jemand irgendwer
Akkusativ einen Niemanden jemanden irgendwen
Dativ einem Niemandem jemandem irgendwem

Futur I und Futur II
The Futur I and Futur II is normally used for pretending or assuming or guessing something. So, it is called Futur I und Futur II zum Ausdruck von Vermutungen.
Example Sentence Formation
Futur I er wird warten werden + Infinitiv Prsens
Futur II er wird gewartet haben er wird gefahren sein
werden + Partizip Perfekt + haben oder sein
The "--" indicate the form of 3rd person is important but not others. You remember the rule 90% etc. that is said above. So, when needed we can opt for Konjunktiv II Form in "--". For example, ich htte . So, that is the trick !

Tips
1) The APPs "CanooNet" and "dict.cc" and the Website "leo.dict.org" are the best I find. 2) Shopping and Conversing This is my plan that I developed for myself while I learned German on my own. Shopping : Reading a product description is an easiest way to know many words. For example go to any IKEA or any shopping mall and note down the names of products and/or Product description. How many words can you collect now? With how many service people can you speak there? A lot of words and speak with many! Conversing : If you are a kind of person in need of confidence or a person who does not wait for help then just prepare some questions and start putting your short questions and converse even with strangers. Yes, it works perfectly! Remember, it is not difficult to say, " hi, put your question and say bye." and most of the people cannot be rude for your short question. This should be your initial target. Well, when I learned German on my own I just hit the people in Germany whenever I wanted and started doing that. It is said, " A bird builds its nest slowly and slowly". For example speak to service persons. It's a secure way too. Talk less, say the point and say good bye. You are done with it! For example, I can share what I did with sales people in IKEA. I just asked the sales woman in German, "Do you think you would prefer this product in your kitchen?" or "Do you think this Sofa will fit in my room which is 25 sq.m. long?" I Thank you ! it is really good to know your opinion! Bye bye! I like the product I will think of buying it. If you happen to meet any rude person or similar just tell in your mind , "the next !". Persistence is the key to success ! 3) Recording This is the best that for me. I record all the verbs or whatever that I need on my mobile phone. Whenever I had time I just listen to it. Doing this way not only saves my time, but also I can do self evaluation. Most Mobile Phones have this facility. It called "recorder".
