CUSHIONS & ACCESSORIES IN AFRICAN FABRIC IKOYI COLLECTION 2010 Eva Sonaike is a London-based label dedicated to hand-finished cushions and accessories made of beautiful, distinct African textiles in vibrant colours. The capsule collection IKOYI consists of cushions made of colourful wax cotton fabric, combined with luxury velvet. The multicoloured bold pieces combine the vibrancy of African style with the elegance of British understatement. Inspired by the perfect mismatch of the attire of Nigerian women, the luxurious cushion range reflects the vibe of a Lagos street scene: market stalls with exotic fruit, animated traders in exaggerated head wraps, women shoppers in elegant robes and sleek western clothing, yellow buses squeezing through busy roads, hand-painted billboards, alongside palm trees and dusty lanes. IKOYI includes the DIDARA cushion, an elegant blue peacock feather print set against a dove grey velvet; EWE, a purple leaf print combined with royal purple velvet; and ORUN, a yellow and gold sun symbol with a khaki velvet backing amongst other eye-catching designs. Every cushion comes with piping in complimentary colours and the signature round edges. Consisting of three shapes (50x50cm, 40x60cm and 60x60cm) in five different designs, the IKOYI collection brings the beauty and colour of Africa into people’s homes. Eva Sonaike’s cushions can now be found in London’s most prestigious stores including Liberty, Fenwicks of Bond Street and Selfridges, as well as in a selection of exclusive boutiques and websites. ABOUT THE DESIGNER The London-based soft furnishings and accessories label Eva Sonaike was first launched by Eva Sonaike in 2009. Eva, who was born and raised in Germany and is of Nigerian origin, has taken the best elements of those two cultures to inspire her designs. She trained in Journalism at the London College of Printing before working as a TV producer/director for the cult youth and travel programme “urbanation”, reporting on trends from London, Paris and New York. In 2003 she became deputy editor of the fashion magazine BOLZ, whilst successfully freelancing as trend reporter, fashion consultant and interior stylist for clients such as Rubecksen Yamanaka, Firorosimo, Fashion Information, Noise Festival and Spaces magazine. In 2005 Eva acquired an MA in Fashion Journalism from the London College of Fashion, where she specialised in contemporary African fashion and design. During this summer she was commissioned by London’s arts festival Africa 2005 to develop and produce the fashion show Afro Chic ‘05, which was held in Kingly Court on Carnaby Street. In 2006 Eva became UK Fashion Editor of Hubert Burda Media, which publishes German Elle Instyle and Focus, amongst other titles. The idea for her cushions and accessories label came from Eva’s growing up with the vibrancy and colours of West African clothing culture and the antique and retro furnishings of continental Europe – a potent combination that has led to the unique and distinctive style of her designs.
