    German—American Day October 6

A proclamation to mark GERMAN-AMERICAN DAY was signed and read by Mayor Barron Casteel on 24 September 2018. The proclamation was initiated by the New Braunfels Partnership Committee to mark German-American Day , 6 October. Several Society members and Gemischter Chor Harmonie members attended. Thank you! And a special thanks to John & Cindy Coers for their behind the scenes work. Proclamations are not automatic and must be researched and requested. The Proclamation is shown on page 3.

German-American Day is celebrated on October 6. It is a day to celebrate the German American heritage. The German-American Day is celebrated annually and commemorates the date in 1683 when 13 German families from Krefeld near the Rhine landed in Philadelphia.

These families subsequently founded Germantown, Pennsylvania, the first German settlement in the original thirteen American colonies. Originally celebrated in the nineteenth century, German-American Day died out in World War I as a result of the anti-German sentiment that prevailed at the time. The holiday was revived in 1983 when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October 6th as German-American Day to celebrate and honor the 300th anniversary of German-American immigration and culture in the United States.

Also, German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is observed in Germany on October 3 to mark the anniversary of the nation's unification. It remembers when the Federal Republic of Germany and the Democratic Republic of Germany united to create one single, federal Germany on October 3, 1990.
