The Gerald R. Gill Fund A Donor Report 2013
As the dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, it is my honor to thank you for your support of the Gerald R. Gill Fund. Your continued generosity demonstrates the lasting impact Professor Gill had—and continues to have—on the Tufts Community. Your collective efforts keep his legacy alive and I’m truly encouraged by the example each one of you has set in contributing to this fund.
Thus far, we have raised close to $410,000 for the Gerald R. Gill Fund! This endeavor allowed us to create a robust scholarship
fund, the Gerald R. Gill Scholarship Fund, in 2008. Now we are focused on part two of our goal: raising $2 million to support the establishment of the Gerald R. Gill Professorship. I hope with your continued support we will soon be able to attract and retain exceptional professors in Gerry’s name, faculty who follow his tradition of sharing their expertise and passion in the classroom.
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of visiting with many of you at a lively event cohosted by Janice Savin Williams, Jennifer Turner Harrigan, and Alicin Williamson, where alumni were able to reconnect through the celebration of Professor Gill’s life. At this event, we spoke about the extremely vital issue of faculty support and echoed why endowed professorships are crucial to Tufts. It was wonderful to hear your memories of Professor Gill and be reminded, once again, of the impact a great professor can have on the lives of their students.
Finally, I’d like to introduce you to the most recent recipient of the Gerald R. Gill Scholarship Fund, Tomas Manghi, A13, from Chicago, Illinois. Tomas graduated this past May with degrees in environmental studies and history, and he hopes to attend medical school in the near future. I hope you’ll enjoy reading more about Tomas and take pride in how your shared generosity is making a difference in his life.
With gratitude,
Joanne Berger-SweeneyDean of the School of Arts and Sciences

My name is Tomas Manghi and I am the recipient of the Gerald R. Gill Scholarship Fund. I would like to thoroughly thank you for your contributions to this scholarship fund. I am a student who receives a financial aid package every year from Tufts, without which I would not be able to attend, and as such this scholarship is essential to my education.
I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and moved to Chicago when I was nine years old. In high school, I gained a passion for two disciplines, history and the sciences, because I had amazing teachers in those subjects. I grew to particularly enjoy chemistry and biology, and even began to consider medicine as a career. But I could never leave history behind. Beyond academics, in high school I played soccer and was heavily involved in sketch and improvisational comedy.
I chose Tufts largely because of its reputation as a place where diversity was celebrated and students were encouraged to pursue a wide variety of interests. I was also drawn by Tufts’ focus on activism and social justice. The college application process was difficult for me because, although both of my parents have degrees, I am the first person to go to college in the United States and the system is very different.
After four years here, I have found Tufts to be a fantastic university. Not surprisingly, given my interests in high school, I double-majored in environmental studies and history. The Environmental Studies Department at Tufts introduced me to the idea of understanding the environment from a scientific standpoint; using data to understand the issues of our time. At the same time, I’ve maintained my interest in history, focusing on early medieval society and gender issues.
Medicine is always something that has strongly interested me and around sophomore year of college I chose to focus on becoming a physician. In January of this year, I took the MCAT exam and managed a high score that should make me competitive in medical school admissions. I am now in the process of applying to medical school and will find out if I have been accepted this winter or spring. Until then, I am working in a laboratory at Northwestern University in Chicago. I am not sure what will happen over the next year, but I am really excited about my future.
Again, I would like to strongly thank you all for the gift of this scholarship, which has provided me (and other students) with the ability to attend Tufts.
Yours Truly,Tomas S. Manghi
Tomas Manghi, A13, says thanks!
On February 25, 2013, alumni and friends gathered together to honor and remember Professor Gerald R. Gill. The event was hosted by Janice Savin Williams, J79, Jennifer Turner Harrigan, J90, and Alicin M. Williamson, J90, at the 21 Club in New York City. Dean Joanne Berger-Sweeney shared thoughts on Tufts’ future and the impact of Professor Gill’s legacy. The event also featured an auction of a work of art by Arnold J. Kemp, A91; all proceeds benefited the Gerald R. Gill Fund.

Gerald Gill was beloved by students and faculty not only in the history department, where he taught for nearly 30 years, but also across the university. His openness and warmth made him a popular teacher and a friend to all. As a colleague once recalled, “He knew everyone in the entire Tufts community, from the woman who handed him his cup of coffee in the morning to the custodian cutting the grass, to his students, to his students’ parents, to his graduate students.”
A scholar of African American history in the 20th century, Gerald took pains to bridge the gaps between various ethnic communities on campus. He also single-handedly brought attention to how the history of Tufts reflected larger trends in African American history. On the occasion of the university’s 150th anniversary, he wrote the first history of African American students at Tufts for Tufts Magazine.
He was voted Professor of the Year for Massachusetts twice. He also was the first to be awarded the Lerman-Neubauer Prize for Outstanding Teaching and Advising, and the first to receive the Tufts Community Senate’s Professor of the Year Award. In 1995, he was among the teachers honored by the Carnegie Foundation.
He was honored so often for his teaching that one prize, the distinguished service award bestowed by the Africana Center at Tufts, was renamed for him. He also served as a key consultant on numerous broadcasts, including the award-winning television series Eyes on the Prize.
Gerald Gill died suddenly on July 26, 2007. The Gerald R. Gill Fund was created in 2007 with the goal of creating a scholarship, professorship, and graduate student fellowship in his honor. As Sol Gittleman said, “What provides faculty with a legacy is the impact we have on students. In the case of Gerald Gill, that legacy has been profound. He touched everyone he taught; generations of students will never forget him.” For more information on the Gerald R. Gill Fund, please contact the School of Arts and Sciences Office of Development at 617-627-3732.
