GEPC Charter

The purpose of the Green Engineering Program Committee

(GEPC) is to promote a holistic, systems approach to improved

energy efficiency, sustainability, renewable energy and ‘cradle-to-

cradle’ design. GEPC serves as the AIAA focal point for all “green”

aerospace-related programs and technologies, and works

synergistically with the appropriate technical committees to assure

that the AIAA membership is adequately informed about all aspects

of this critical aerospace activity.

Inverse design procedure for hybrid electric/alternative energy

hybrid – Jonathan Gibbs

Hi Marty,

I can present some work on an inverse design procedure for hybrid

electric/alternative energy hybrid via telecon.

The idea is to start the design process with a constant caroc (instead of

payload range requirements) and adjust the aircraft size according the

amount of money left after the cost of energy. If the energy is cheaper,

you can build more airplane but since caroc is constant, you never build

too much airplane such that the cost of operating is above the

baseline… Its meant to address a problem in hybrid electric designs

where the cost of battery cycle & change in empty weight aren’t

accounted for and result in aircraft that are more expensive to operate

even though they have cheaper electricity… 12

F360 Panel – Low Carbon Aviation Report and Recommendations

• In 2015, NASA commissioned the National Research

Council to convene a committee to develop a national

research agenda with the objective of reducing life-cycle

carbon emissions from commercial aviation.

• The recommended research agenda consists of a

prioritized set of research projects of importance to the

national and international commercial aeronautics

community, and focuses on advances in technologies and

capabilities that can only be achieved through substantial

research and technology development.

28

Possible Keynote Speaker (Erik Lindbergh) for Aviation

2017 – Electric Aircraft and STEM Education

Erik,

It appears to me like you might be a great “keynote speaker” at one of our conferences,

rather than just talking to our relatively small group. Typically, each day of one of our

AIAA conferences (there are 4-5 each year) is kicked off by an inspirational

speaker. Have you ever done this at an AIAA conference? Your speech can have a

lot more impact this way. Should I check into it?

Thanks,

Marty

Yes – the more people the merrier! I did a keynote for AIAA San Diego around a decade

ago – they filled up the San Diego Aerospace Museum. Let me know if I can help or

provide info…

Best,

Erik

Year in Review Article

Aerospace America is now soliciting articles for the December issue, “2016 Year in Review.”

These articles will highlight notable technological breakthroughs and important developments

in the space and aviation fields and will be written by you, the members of AIAA’s 80+

technical and program committees.

All technical and program committee chairs are asked to designate a writer to prepare a 600-

word year-end review article. The writers should review the article requirements (attached)

and e-mail their article and photo captions on the attached Submission Form. Please send

JPG photographs with the article, but on separate emails to keep the file size manageable.

Please number the Photos 1, 2, 3 to match the caption information on the Submission Form.

The deadline to receive the year-end review articles is Friday, Sept. 16.

Until then, if you have any questions or require any further information, please feel free to

contact me at any time.

2016 Year-in-Review Webinar Key Takeaways

STYLE/CONTENT TIPS

• Describe breakthroughs in the 2016

calendar year.

• Briefly introduce readers to small

companies and unique terminology

• Describe tech in a few plain-English

words. Is it a smartphone app? A plane?

A camera on a satellite?

• Convey the significance of each event.

Was this the fastest the plane has flown?

Did the review clear the way to start

construction?

• Write conversationally, as though you are

speaking with a smart person who might

know little about this particular topic.

Hilton Salt Lake City Center, 255 S W Temple, Salt Lake City, UT

Detailed Agenda and Welcome Package

Workshop Objectives

53

• Discuss and define the technologies and technology advances required

to realize hybrid electric and electric-propelled flight in civil and military

aircraft

• Further the understanding of the evolving and future demand for

electrical power in military aircraft in order to help identify potential dual-

use applications

• Help identify the appropriate role for AIAA in supporting the aerospace

industry and profession in the identification of the R&D necessary to

make advances in more electric aircraft in the nearer term and the

transition to hybrid electric, and even electric propulsion

• Bring appropriate communities together to discuss challenges and

advances in EP-related technologies by aerospace R&D organizations,

enhancing research roadmaps

Discussion Questions

• Technologies

What are the critical technology barriers to propagating E/HEP from small to large scale

applications? What are the top three breakthroughs are needed?

What is the risk/readiness assessment of the electric/hybrid electric propulsion technologies that are

currently being developed/demonstrated for small scale applications?

Do applicable standards for high power distribution on aircraft exist (IEEE/SAE/FAA), or are there high

power distribution standards that can be adapted? How about for large scale batteries?

When and how should the creation of FAA FARs and TSOs for large scale electric propulsion begin?

• Systems Integration

What new system integration architectures will be critical at large scale?

How will the role of traditional gas turbine engine manufactures evolve as we move toward large-scale

E/HEP applications? Will the GTE manufacture remain the “propulsion system contractor” and provide

all propulsion components, or will the airframe contractor take more of a propulsion integration role?

What are the advantageous or early roles for hybrid electric propulsion on aircraft? Eg. providing lift at

take off or cruise power in different phases of flight?

Are there certification roadmaps for hybrid-electric propulsion aircraft?

Are there regulatory or business-related roadblocks that are different from small to large scale

applications?

55

Topics of Discussion Continued

• Role of AIAA

How can AIAA develop and encourage research and work in this field?

What EP/HEP activities should be taking place, and in which AIAA forums?

What are ways that AIAA could or should collaborate with IEEE and FAA to develop this field?

Is there a role for AIAA in creating standards for this field?

Is there a gap or gaps that FAA, IEEE and other bodies are not addressing that AIAA can help with?

What does that look like? A forum on power electronics? A new technical committee?

What is the perception of E/HEP technology within your organization; what is needed to better advocate

the technology?
