Transcript of Georges Malaika Foundation Africa Sponsorship Presentation
Why Education MattersThe Democratic Republic of Congo is currently experiencing an education crisis and GMF needs your help. Over the last decade, over 5.5 million deaths have occurred as a result of the ongoing conflict, and over 400,000 women have been raped. The dire situation in Congo has wreaked havoc on the educational system, leaving many children out of school, of which over half are girls. Despite the challenges that Congo faces, with your support, hope is on the horizon.
Why Sponsor a Girl?Historically, educating girls has been proven time and again to have a profound effect on girls’ lives, the lives of their children, and their communities.
Girls who stay in school for seven or more years marry 4 years later and have 2 fewer children.(1) As a result, a girl who is educated is more likely to have fewer children later in life, resulting in healthier families and decreased risk of early maternal mortality.
In addition, educating girls increases overall income for the family and causes increased economic independence, lifting entire families out of poverty and creating confident, empowered young women. The ramifications are not limited to their immediate social network but include benefits for the society at large that equate to higher GDPs, transformed mindsets and barriers removed, all of which allow women to go farther and rise higher.(1) Source: 50.usaid.gov

How Sponsorship Changes LivesEducating a girl transforms her life and the lives of those around her in enormous ways. It’s like a butterfly effect: it is far reaching and can alter the course of her life and accelerate her path out of poverty. The impact can be felt like a ripple outward as lives and conditions are changed for the better. In a country where 5.5 million people have died and countless women have been raped, hope is once again within reach.
How Sponsorship Transforms CommunitiesHelping a girl means helping her and her family help themselves. In meetings with our students’ families, they have committed to cleaning, cooking and growing produce for the girls and staff members in our school garden. This type of initiative transcends traditional charity and allows people to take part in creating their own solutions to their own challenges. It mobilizes people and thus communities to tackle the root causes of poverty through accessing education, addressing the issue of food-insecurity and working hand in hand with GMF to improve the quality of life for GMF girls. This is truly a community-based school in which the ripple effect will be felt throughout Kalebuka.
Building a School on a Model of Community Empowerment GMF is dedicated to advancing African Communities through investing in girls’ education, and we do it through an inclusive approach involving the community we hope to impact. We value the support and contributions that the people of Kalebuka have made, such as taking part in brickmaking, landscaping and the technical expertise of local contractors that played a leading role in the construction of the school.
When you allow those at the very base to take part in their own development, the model becomes sustainable and those at the bottom become empowered as a result. This has been our approach and our vision at GMF. Ultimately, we believe that a large majority of answers to the challenges facing Africa reside with Africans, and women and girls play a critical part in that development. Through educating girls and thus empowering women, they are better equipped to finding solutions and creating a better future.
• The focus on community empowerment has been the cornerstone of our approach throughout the process of initiating our school project. By involving members’ participation at every level we insure that long term success is achievable.
• On weekends, the school will offer classes in basic literacy and vocational training for parents.
• Mothers will be trained in sewing school uniforms designed by Lauren Bush, founder of Feed Project and well-known model and fashion stylist.
• Over time we will initiate a school garden. The produce grown will provide healthy meals prepared by mothers in the school’s canteen and will focus on menu items designed by a local nutritionist.
• The additional food will be sold at the local market to generate funds to sustain school projects.
• The sports field will allow a space for girls to engage in physical activities that will assist in building positive self-esteem and health awareness. Community members will benefit also from use of the field.

Lauren Bush is an innovative thinker who fuses fashion and philanthropy to support causes that work to improve the life of children in Africa and around the globe. She is known for creating aesthetically pleasing designs that are both environmentally conscious and timeless in style. As creator of the concept behind the FEED Projects and designer of Lauren Pierce (www.laurenpierce.com), Lauren is no stranger to using her talents in socially conscious ways that prove to be both uplifting and empowering to the children and communities she touches. Lauren Pierce is a womenswear brand that uses hand-dyed fabrics from women from the DRC to create resort designs that are elegant and timeless. Through partnering with GMF, Lauren continues her remarkable humanitarian outreach by designing school uniforms for our 104 girls starting school in the fall. The ladies of the village of Kalebuka will receive vocational training in sewing funded by Lauren Pierce and will sew the uniforms to be worn by our girls. The contributions will also provide for the sewing machinery needed for training, as well as materials, and will provide essential items for our girls, taking a large burden off of families who often refrain from sending girls to school because of the family’s inability to cover the associated costs.

The GMF School for GirlsThe GMF School for Girls will open in late August 2011, with a starting class of 104 girls.
The school is located in Kalebuka, one of eight neighborhoods (districts) that surround Lubumbashi, the premier city in the Southeastern Katanga Province.
Kalebuka is located about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from the city, is divided into 17 quarters and has an estimated 25,000 inhabitants. Kalebuka
currently has only five small schools (all of which are located in the center of this district) and three vocational training programs. The GMF School for Girls is located in the Munama quarter, a completely underserved area which has no schools or educational facilities.
How the Girls were Chosen One child per family aged 5-6 was chosen from the surrounding area of Kalebuka (extending 5k surrounding the village.)
The School Building Phase 1 construction of GMF School for Girls finished in May of 2011. We are excited that construction is complete and we are in the midst of developing a solid educational structure for the girls. Funds and construction materials were raised due to the generous donations of individuals, foundations and corporate sponsors who believe in our cause.
