Domestic Effect

Patriot Act• The patriot act as signed by

President George Bush in 2001 greatly increased the ability of federal and state law enforcement agencies to search the telephone calls, emails, health and financial records of citizens with the intent of reducing and preventing terrorist activities in the United States.

Home Land Security• Its responsibilities include

exploring ways to respond to terror attacks and working to better coordinate intelligence about terrorist threats

Osama bin Laden

• Born into a very weathly Saudi Arabian family• Leader of al-Qaeda or "The Base"• Alleged perpetrator of the Sep. 11th attacks• At first denied acusations but later took responsibility

forinsipiring the events of Sep. 11th• He has also been linked to other terrorist attacks on

the U.S.• Some of which were embassy bombings and firefights

with U.S. soldiers • Locating bin Laden is very difficult because of the

widespread al-Qaeda all over the Mid-East. • Bin Laden is suspected to be hiding somewhere in

Pakistan

War in Afghanistan

• Began October 7, 2001.• Response to September 11th.• Attempt to eliminate the base of operations

for al-Qaeda terrorists attacks. As well as halt Taliban assistance to al-Qaeda.

• Attempt to locate and eliminate al-Qaeda command structure, including Osama bin Laden.

• However the al-Qaeda is widespread and not centered in any one location, therefore complicating efforts apprehend them.

Iraq War

• Began March 20th, 2003

• Original reason for invasion was Iraq was believed to have weapons of mass destruction   

• after investigation it was concluded that Iraq had ended their nuclear program in 1991

• Also called the Second Gulf War

U.S. Casualties• 4,683 American Troops have died

in Iraq and Afghanistan• 3,708 have died from hostile fire• The remainder were due to

accident, illness, or suicide•  30,490 U.S. service members have

been wounded due to combat actions in Iraq and 2,309 in Afghanistan (32,799 total). The Army experienced 22,948 (70.0%) of those casualties, the Marine Corps 8,721 (26.6%), the Navy 656 (2%), and the Air Force 474 (1.4%).
