The boss is back and that usually only means one thing: you can confidently

take the short odds for Ultimate Sniper in tonight’s $250,000 Woodlands Derby at Alexandra Park.

The star three-year-old pacer lost his unbeaten record in the Derby prelude last Friday when, after trailing, he hung in and paced roughly on the final bend, losing two lengths on eventual winner Jesse Duke.

You can expect neither of those things — trailing or pacing roughly — to happen again tonight.

Champion trainer Mark Purdon wasn’t in Auckland last week, he was busy putting the winning polish on his Miracle Mile night team in Sydney but he has been back this week and hands on with the Derby favourite.

It is not that Purdon’s staff don’t do a great job when the boss is absent, after all they have won plenty of

AUCKLAND CUP DAY QUADDIE PREVIEW

LEG 1 RACE 7

YOURDEEL was a dominant winner last start at Matamata, he has a nasty draw but has to be included. BAVELLA can’t be dropped off the average run, she had no luck last start and should have finished closer, follow your money. ARETHA surprised just about everyone except her connections when winning last start, she can only improve from that. AOTEA LAD though beaten last start by his stablemate he was still making ground at the finish, blinkers go on for this, he is capable of turning the tables. AALAALUNE was the run of the race last start, if she can just settle closer then she is a winning chance, don’t risk her.

LEG 2 RACE 8

MELODY BELLE has been the benchmark all season, hard to go past her. DANZDANZDANCE deserves another chance, C Grylls is in form and will give her every chance. Last years Derby winner VIN DE DANCE is back to his best, he will be even better this time. ON THE ROCKS has gone to another level lately, WFA makes life tough against the good mares, but he can’t be totally overlooked.

LEG 3 RACE 9

GUNDOWN was ultra impressive when winning the traditional lead up last week, he will be making his move early and the 2 miles will be no issue. CHARLES ROAD is peaking at the right time, he put the writing on the wall when an unlucky 4th last start, hard to beat. VENGEUR MASQUE is an Aussie raider with form at the distance, he races close to the pace and isn’t here for a holiday. GLORY DAYS is in irresistible form, she draws wide but drops to a nice place in the weights, goes close. Rougher chance KAMANDA LINCOLN made ground stylishly last start and is sure to have his admirers.

LEG 4 RACE 10VEE CECE will notice the drop in class here, 3KG claim is an assist, she must go in. LORD ARTHUR gets his chance to show his true worth here, and he has been crying out for a middle distance, hard to beat. ROC YA SOX was in need of his last start since returning from a setback, he will be spot on for this.

ELLERSLIE M2

Star 3yo Ultimate Sniper should have no handicaps in tonight’s Derby at Alexandra Park.

Jake Bayliss did a double take when he was told the 600-metre time reeled off by On The

Rocks in his final Bonecrusher Stakes hitout on the Matamata course proper yesterday morning.“A tick over 36? You’re kidding! It felt like 39 – 38 at the very best.”No kidding Jake, the Matamata trackwork clocker’s stopwatch had On The Rocks running 1200 metres in 1:19.8 seconds and the last 600 in 36.3. For back-up, co-trainer Pam Gerard’s watch said 36.4. “That’s amazing,” Bayliss added, “he just breezed it. When he pulled up he let out a little puff and then just ambled off.”That underscored something the Ballymore Stables team have been saying for the past couple of weeks about the last-start Herbie Dyke Stakes winner. “He’s absolutely thrived, we simply couldn’t be happier with him,” Gerard repeated. “The instructions this morning were to let him roll along the last bit but nothing too strenuous.

“I got a surprise too when I looked at my clock, so I can understand Jake’s reaction, but he’s got a long stride and can be very deceptive when he lets down. “The intention since the Herbie Dyke has always been to give him that month between races and it’s all gone to plan. The main thing is he’s very well and that’s what you want going into a Group One.”Tomorrow’s weight-for-age feature has the potential to be the highlight of Auckland Cup Week, with the main talking point Melody Belle’s middle-distance debut and her attempt at an incredible fifth Group One win for the season. The late decision to run Zabeel Classic winner Danzdanzdance has added an intriguing element, while the prospect of an in-form On The Rocks returning to his favourite track suggests that at least two greys can threaten the party for New Zealand’s highest rated racehorse.Backed by the confidence of ticking off her maiden Group One success with On The Rocks last month, Gerard and her Flemington-based

training partner Mike Moroney have two live Group One chances on the Ellerslie card. The other is Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup candidate Vengeur Ma s q u e , w h o a r r i v e d f ro m Melbourne on Sunday wi th impressive staying credentials for the $500,000 two-miler.

“Mike had done all the serious work with him before he put him on the plane,” Gerard said. “He took no time to settle in and we’ve just had to keep him ticking over and a bit of striding work this morning.“So long as we don’t get too much of the rain that’s forecast, they’ll know he’s there.”

races in his absence including two last Friday, but Purdon is still Purdon and he picks up the smallest details others might miss.

“I think he has a slight issue hanging last week which we can fix for this week,” says Purdon.

“I have put a Murphy Blind on him with a small hole in it to make him concentrate better.

“I am confident he will be better and from that draw he will probably be in front. So he is clearly the one

to beat.” Ultimate Sniper has looked a touch freakish this season and as good as stablemate Jesse Duke is it is hard to see him beating him again. Another stablemate Another Masterpiece was scratched yesterday with an elevated temperature. Those looking for p lace and multis value should check out Bettorstartdreaming, who has the gate speed to find the markers early and follow close to the favourite which is the golden pathway to placing in major Alexandra Park saying events. Purdon has every reason to expect his heroics of last Saturday to be repeated tonight, with Smooth Deal looking a little too strong for his rivals in the $100,000 Breckon Farms Young Guns Final although Sweet On Me is going to have to overcome a tricky draw in the fillies final but she oozes class. But he has lost his big gun out of the City Of Auckland Free-For-All with Ultimate Machete’s huge frame finally giving up on him, with the multiple group one winner suffering suspensory damage which threatens his career. With him out of the race speedsters Star Galleria and Jack’s Legend become the two to beat, with the draw suggesting the former is the better bet.

ANALYSIS: EASTANBULL (7) showed what he is really capable of when destroying his opposition last start, different draw tonight but should still be able to cross early, go again. DINA BROWN (1) should hold up the inside and get the trip she wants, place best for her. AWESOME SPEED (5) went her usual honest race last start making the most of a hot mid race speed duel and running on for 3rd, same again. Consider BLACK ART (6) 2nd up in the North Island, asked to do too much last start, better for that, follow your money. TROUBADOR (8) Galloped when being put into the race last start, better than that, each way. THE STUNNING NUN (9) will notice the drop in grade here, should get a good run through, can win.

FORGET THE PRICE TAG (8) was charging home form the back last start, 10 metres closer in the handicaps to that winner and steps up to a more favourable distance, hard to beat. WESTY BOYS (5) kept up a good clip to score last week, not as effective at 2700 metres but is a place chance all the same. GALLEONS VICTORY (7) doing his best at the end of his race last week, better suited by the longer distance here, due a change in luck.

ANALYSIS: BUBBLED UP (3) will be better for that fi rst run for the season at Northern headquarters last week, she should fi nd the top from her handy draw and be too good. Stablemate KAYLA MARIE (6) is taking a bit of extra time to come up as a 3 year old, she will appreciate the small fi eld, expect better tonight. ZEALAND STAR (8) has yet to do it right handed, he was much better last start after beginning slowly, if he gets it right at the start then he is right in this. MASSIVE METRO (6) on the other hand is better over the longer journeys, he gets his chance to turn the tables this time. EVERYBODY KNOWS (5) looks to be a chance for a minor placing yet again, he is a foolproof trotter that always trys his best. GERSHWIN (3) has been impressive against lesser opposition at his last couple, he will be suited beginning out wide and can measure up here. HEAVYWEIGHT HERO is regaining his race day fi tness, it was only an early break that cost him fi nishing closer last start, the ace draw is not ideal but he is worth a risk.

STAR GALLERIA (5) was so brave last start, he might have a crack for the lead from this draw, very hard to beat if he fi nds the front. ULTIMATE MACHETE (2) has a much better draw here, he faded after working hard mid stages last time out, expect a form reversal here. TRIPLE EIGHT (4) was knocking them over late last start, he has to be driven that way and is some chance with the run to suit. There are many chances in a very strong fi eld.

ANALYSIS: SWEET ON ME looks to be the dominant fi lly at the moment, she won’t have it all her own way from this draw but that’s why you have the Iceman driving. LITTLE MISS PERFECT gets her chance from the draw to turn the tables on the favourite, she should cross the pole easily enough and from there she’ll be hard to beat. TIFFANY ROSE worked to fi nd the lead last start, making the race for the eventual winner, she can work a bit less from the better draw and hold up the inside if things go her way early, bears close watching. AMAZING DREAM shouldn’t be overlooked, she had to make a midrace move on her own in the lead up and even though she has another tricky draw she is good enough to overcome that and be right in the thick of things here.

ANALYSIS: Not looking past the prelude for this ULTIMATE SNIPER to reverse the plac-ings of last week, he was the dominant 3 year old leading up to that race which would have cleaned him up nicely for the 2700 metres tonight. JESSE DUKE wasn’t stopping last week but it was just a sprint home, he’ll have to work harder from the horror draw but has continued to improve with racing in the North Island. BETTORSTARTDREAMING took it the All Stars team at the half mile in the prelude, understandably he faded late but will be all the better for that run, the 2700 metres should suit this fellow and he can make his presence felt. ANALYSIS: SMOOTH DEAL (7) should still be able to cross them from the 7, if that hap-pens how do they beat him? VIRGIL (3) will he hold up the fence when he crosses early on and wait for his stablemate? That is the big question and the key to his best chance, but minors again we think. MACH DA VINCI (4) is in the same situation as the above horse, if he eases out early then he could only hope to place and coming out quickly could leave him with nothing, very interesting fi rst quarter here. PERFECT STRIDE (2) the best he can hope for is to be 3 back on the fence, if so he can defi nitely run 3rd.

ANALYSIS: MOSSDALE ROSE showed enough speed at her fi rst start here to say she should cross them again if Ricky May chooses to do so, too strong last time and probably this time also. STEP UP would have improved after last weeks run but would need to, her best chance is to try and cross over early. DIBABA should make up the same trifecta as last week, she closed resolutely from the back last start and would only have to settle a touch closer to be better than an each way chance here. KENSINGTON KATE can make the most of her good draw and try and cross the pole runner early, if she can lob 3 back the fence then she is a solid place chance from there.

ANALYSIS: SHE’S ALLTHE CRAZE (3) was a brave 2nd in her fi rst spin around the Park, sure to be better for that effort, can go one better. THATGIRLTROUBLE (5) resuming after a couple of Months off, she was good when 2nd at a recent workout, ready to rumble in this. INVICTUS (1) worked his way to a solid win last time, promising and wouldn’t have to improve much to be a threat here. SUNNY PEGASUS (6) was much more like it last start in better company, a repeat of that effort takes him close.

ANALYSIS: BREEZON and WALKIN BY come out of a strong form race three weeks ago with the 4th horse in the race, Honesty, impressive last week at Ellerslie. They look the best chances. You have to consider STARIANI despite the disappointing showing last time in a far stronger fi eld. Two starts back she was a solid 4th behind Tiger Silk, a placegetter last Saturday in a richer race. IGNORED hasnt raced since November but has always shown promise and the win last time was impressive. .

ANALYSIS: PODRAVINA was super impressive on Saturday after a game third in stakes company the start prior. She is a black type mare in waiting and this race looks hers for the taking. NICOLETTA is clearly the class horse of the fi eld who had no luck last time at Hastings when forced to race wide throughout. This looks an ideal race to return to the winners circle. CONTESSA VANESSA is also a class act when right and she seems to be regathering her three year old form again. That was a top run last time at Hastings to fi nish third after a tardy beginning.

ANALYSIS: BETHANY is clearly the one to beat. She is still a maiden but she has contested some quality maiden and special condition races lately and beaten many horses that have won since. She should win. THE HELIX is the big danger. He backed up his recent maiden win with an unlucky third at Matamata last time. WILLIAM TELL is in great form. He hasnt put a foot wrong all season and copped a check when running third on Derby Day. There is nothing but respect around him while the best of the rest are last start maiden winners ZENVO and BIRDIE BLITZ.

ANALYSIS: TOGETHER had a shocking run last time at Tauranga after some impressive displays in her previous two. She has a big stride and unwinds when the pace is on. She is going places. JIP JIP ROCK hasnt raced since being stakes placed on this track in early De-cember. The manner in which she won her maiden race last year left little doubt she is well above average. She had a trial recently to fi t her for this test. HONESTY was very unlucky two starts ago and gained a well deserved and impressive win last Saturday. Expect her to put in big time again. Others for the exotics are OWEN PATRICK and the hardy MONACO.

ANALYSIS: RHINESTONE COWBOY is a class act. He would have taken so much im-provement out of the Matamata run last time when he was beaten by an equally talented galloper. He should go close and it will be a major surprise if he doesnt. TIGHTLIGN is talented and was unlucky two starts ago at Te Rapa and found the line well last time at Ellerslie. LUCKY SWEEP did the job under a big weight on Saturday and while he goes up in class he goes down in weight. He could try for an all the way win. IRISH FLAME is back from stakes company and should have fi nished closer last time.

ANALYSIS: RIKKI TIKKI TAVI deserves one. She ran on solidly against Princess Kereru last Saturday and was unlucky the start prior. JOY ANNA likes Ellerslie. Her run at Awapuni last time was tidy enough and she trialled well recently at Avondale where she beat a rival for Saturday in MARZEMINO who is well above average with an incredible win here two starts back fresh in our minds. DAMA ZORRO cant be left and both STRA-TOCASTER and GO NICHOLAS have contested better fi elds than this in the past.

ANALYSIS: YOURDEEL blitzed the opposition last time and theres no reason why he cannot win again despite the rise in class. AOTEA LAD is also classy and his group two win at Trentham and his all round form gives him strong recommendations. He fi nished alongside YOURDEEL in the Karaka Millions. EQUINOX was disadvantaged by the wet track at Matamata last time after brilliant debut at Trentham. ARETHA and RAINBOW DASH fought out a tooth and nail struggle in the Matamata Breeders Stakes and are defi nite chances again while BAVELLA clearly didnt like the track at Matamata and didnt get the best of runs either. A win by her would not surprise.

ANALYSIS: MELODY BELLE is the fl asgship and her fi rst run beyond 1600m is eagerly awaited. The way she found the line over 1600m in the Haunui Classic after skirting wide suggests the distance wont be a problem. DANZDANZDANCE is a dual group one winner this term who raced too handy at Te Rapa. Her gallop between races on Saturday was enough to suggest by her trainers that she is ready to take on MELODY BELLE again. ON THE ROCKS was superb last time and he wont die wondering against the two high class mares while CONSENSUS is at the top of her game and VIN DE DANCE and RONDINELLA are youngsters with so much upside. ANALYSIS: GLORY DAYS races as though two mile wont be an issue. She has been well prepared for this and it is doubtful she will run a bad race. At the weights she is the one to beat. A fellow CD galloper FIVE TO MIDNIGHT deserves the Cup after a narrow miss last year. He carried a big weight to win on Karaka night and the weight scale also tips in his favour. GUNDOWN had the perfect rehearsal for the Cup with a dominating win in the Nathans on Saturday. He was unlucky in the Avondale Cup. CHARLES ROAD is a massive chance. Hes had the ideal build up and his run last time at Matamata was as good as it could possibly be. He ran 7th in the Melbourne and was the second Australasian horse home. Others worthy of consideration are DUPLICITY, who was placed in the NZ Cup and had a pipe opener in the Nathans and didnt disgrace himself and the Avondale Cup runner up, BLUE BREEZE, who is clearly under-rated.

ANALYSIS: AMANO is racing well and shapes as though this race will suit after a game run last start. LORD ARTHUR is held in high regard. He cost punters a bit at Trentham and again at his next start but did well last time. POPPY STAR hasnt had the best of luck in her last two and she will be a big threat while HEAD OFFICE didnt get all favours last time, either.
