Principal Koehler’s News
It is hard to believe that our 2018-19 school year will begin very soon. I hope you have
had an enjoyable summer with family and friends.
Whether you are new to George McGovern Middle School or a returning student/family,
we look forward to you being a part of the GMMS Family and hope you become involved
in our school. I encourage every student and parent to embrace the opportunity to make
this a great school year.
Staff at GMMS have been busy during the summer preparing for the 2018-19 school
year. Teachers and administrators have participated in professional development to
improve the instructional opportunities of students. The Custodians, clerical and
maintenance staff have prepared the building and grounds for the return of students.
Our teachers and principals continue refining assessments, aligning instruction to
standards, and improving communication with students and parents. Our #1 goal is to
improve student learning to educate and prepare each student to succeed in a changing
world. Regardless of where students begin the year, we want to help them advance their
critical thinking, knowledge, skills, and ability to problem solve.
Please, complete the Annual Student Information update (see next page for
instructions), GMMS Open House “Eagles Launch” is August 20. If you are unable to
complete the online form before August 20 contact GMMS Office staff 605-367-4440,
they are happy to set up a Parent Portal account for you and you can also drive to
GMMS to use a computer and complete your students registration between the hours of
7:30am to 4pm, Monday through Friday.
GMMS Open House “Eagles Launch” is Monday, August 20, from 1:00pm -8:00pm. This
is the time you and your student will meet teachers, have their school photo ID created,
bring in school supplies, pick up bus and class schedules.
If at any time you have a question about what is occurring in your student’s class, please
contact your student’s core teacher, they are the place to begin. If there are more
concerns, then you should contact myself, Assistant Principal Hutchinson or Intern
Assistant Principal Van Drongelen.
The 2018-19 school year will be a success as we all work together to benefit our
Children/Students. Best wishes for a successful school year, we will see you at
registration “Eagles Launch” August 20 and on the first day of school, Thursday,
August 23.
Sincerely,
Tim Koehler

Mark Your Calendar for Sept. 18th
By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent
By the time you read this, the Summer of 2018 will be mostly memories. If the break from school seemed shorter this year, that is because it was shorter. As you most likely know, the calendar returns this fall to a pre-Labor Day start.
Other than an August start to school, the other big news of 2018 is the upcoming school bond election. For the past 18 months, the Sioux Falls School District has held public meetings and requested community
input on a plan to handle increasing enrollment. Because the city is a thriving economic engine with high standards for quality-of-life assets, our schools are filling up fast. Sometimes due to the enrollment and sometimes due to the age of facilities, safety and security issues also arise.
A 30-member task force of taxpaying citizens that include parents, young adults who are not yet parents, business owners, and retirees convened to understand and affirm growth projections for the city and schools. They developed a recommendation which was presented to the School Board in June and approved in July.
The bond election totaling $190 Million would add a fourth traditional high school in the northwest quadrant of the city, a sixth middle school in the southeast part of the city, and a new elementary. In addition to new buildings, the bond includes money for purchasing land for future school needs and making renovations to 14 existing schools to maintain their high quality. All registered voters in the Sioux Falls School District are urged to go to the polls on Tuesday, September 18. The last time Sioux Falls School District voters were asked to support a bond for facility improvements was in 1997 – more than 20 years ago. Because the District pledges to be good stewards of your taxpayer dollars, those bonds were paid well-before they were due. New schools have been built in the last 20 years, however, those were paid for through Capital Outlay. In 2016, the SD legislature put a limit on Capital Outlay, thereby eliminating the ability for schools to generate the money needed for new schools.
The District – committed to continuing to keep its promise of fiscal accountability to taxpayers – has developed a plan to build the needed schools and make the necessary renovations at a cost of $.13 (13 cents) per $1,000 of property valuation. That means, if you live in a median priced home of $185,000, this plan would add an additional $2 per month to your current tax bill or $24 per year.
We encourage each stakeholder to ask questions and seek facts prior to the September 18 election to make an informed decision in the voting booth. Every opinion matters. We need all of Sioux Falls to help determine the future of your public schools. I hope you have a great year!

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
Our school cares about the safety and well-being of our students. We want to make sure our school is a
good place for students to learn. To do this we use a program called the Olweus Bullying Prevention
Program. The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) is one of the best-known bullying prevention
programs. OBPP has been proven to prevent or reduce bullying.
The goals of OBPP are to reduce bullying problems and prevent new bullying problems from happening.
The program also works to make relationship better among students. The program is for all students,
not just those who are being bullied or who are bullying others.
Parents and guardians play a key role in this program. Your child will be asked to tell an adult at school
and at home if he or she is being bullied or sees bullying happening at school. It will be very important
that you take any bullying seriously and tell our school staff. Our school staff members have been
trained to deal with bullying situations when we are told about them. Bullying should not be seen as
“kids being kids” or something that students just need to deal with. Having a safe school experience is
something that all student should be able to enjoy.
These are the anti-bullying rules at George McGovern. Please review them with your child………
We will not bully others.
We will try to help student who are bullied.
We will try to include students who are left out.
If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.
