On July 28th 1919, Dr. Peter Integlia of the Newport Recreation Department set forth to start a league that would eventually become the oldest amateur baseball league in the country. The new league would be called the Sunset League. The initial stable of teams were the Braves, Richmond’s, Orioles, Tigers, Clean-Ups and Ironsides. The Orioles lasted two games before being replaced by the Auto-matics. Games for the Sunset league were to be played at Wellington Park(locat-ed on the corner of Marchant Street and Wellington Avenue) and the Basin(now known as Cardines field). The 1920’s saw the Sunset league were a bit uneven for the league. The league featured as many as 8 teams and as little as 4. Financially the league struggled to stay afloat, hanging on barely. The baseball however was very good and drew great crowds to the Basin which was now the primary field. The 20’s also saw the influx of the military teams based out of the Newport Naval Station. The military teams would be a part of the Sunset League until 1970. The sunset league has had military teams from the Marines, Navy and Army. The 1930’s started what could be the best era of the Sunset league that stretched into the 1960’s. Barnstorming teams came to the Basin which in1936 was re-named Bernardo Cardines Field for the first Newport fatality in WWI. The 1940’s through the 60’s brought continued excellence both on the field and with attendance at games. 1941 featured what may be the best Sunset League team ever in Fort Adams, they went 21-1 and along with capturing the Sunset League title they also won the Northeast Naval title.

96 Years Old and Thriving

The 70’s and 80’s dealt with the loss of the military teams and thus struggled for some seasons with as few as 4 teams playing in the league. 1990’s gave some resurgence to the league. In 1991 the sunset league was offi-cially named the George Donnelly Sunset League after longtime player/reporter/scorekeeper/historian George Donnelly. The 2000’s brought about steady league filled with college players and vetarans. 2010’s are bringing a younger set of ball players to Cardines field, competition is at an high comparable to the 30’s to 60’s. Throughout the history of the Sunset League a vast majority of the games have been played in Newport, occasionally games were played away from Newport. 152 teams have participated in the Sunset League. Teams have come from Con-necticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. All branches of the armed forces have had a team participate in the Sunset League. Throughout the early years attendance at all games averaged over 60,000 annu-ally. All games ended at dusk until floodlights were installed in 1938. The tran-sition to night games helped keep attendance at historical levels. From 1942-1945 the lights went dark for fear of attracting the attention of German U-boats roaming the Atlantic.
