Interview

The GIC recently partnered w i t h J a n g s e u n g p o N o n g h y u p ( N H ) a n d interviewed the president Soon-Ok Kwon on his perspective of the GIC along with the offers NH has to p r o v i d e t o t h e e x p a t community and more.

Q. Before we start, could you please tell us a little bit about how long have you been in Geoje and how long have you been working at NH? A. I am actually a Geoje native, I was born and raised here. I have been working in NH for five years as a president now. Q. First we’d like to thank you for the support towards the center. What was your incentive in helping the GIC and what is your perspective on it? A. Well, the global era’s trend is aiming for unity, one family, but we have language barriers or different life styles, but I feel the GIC aims to create a path in sense so that we can all work together. It also gives the opportunity for expats to learn about Korean culture. Q. What is Geoje’s role to the expat community? A. Our culture is what I think is what we really have to teach expats. It is what we can do to lessen the burden of the expats forced to live in a new culture. We should offer culture classes like cooking classes for Korean food so that our culture can be shared to the expat community when they go back home. Indeed it is currently too expensive to do, but it certainly is something that I believe our city should be able to have in the future. Q. What is NH’s role to the expat community? A. An example that I would like to point out is that in our case, when a Korean goes overseas, they will crave food from home, like kimchi. Maybe through our NH Supermarket, we can try our best to at the least provide the little things to the comfort of the expats. Q. What do you envision in the GIC-NH relationship? A. NH has a culture center and the programs that we

cannot fully offer we’d like the GIC to continue and work with us on what we else we can do. We’re open to teaching Korean food or traditional Korean dances. With the culture center’s knowledge of Korea and whatnot, we can even help out with the GIC Tour program. We can help choose tour locations and find areas that might be interesting for you. Q. What is NH Bank and are there any benefits for expats community? A. The original purpose of the NH bank was to help out farmers who needed funding for agriculture. NH bank supports farmers to produce healthy and safe foods, and all vegetables in NH market are cultivated from Korea only. Also, from the first of January 2015, expats will be able to internationally transfer money at our bank. All expats in Geoje will have a more favorable exchange rate as it will be same rate as the NH VIP member. Q. Lastly, we are planning on building a sky garden. How do you think NH can help us with that? A. We actually have a director for our storage area who is very knowledgeable in terms of agriculture. We can have him help out with the farming. Also, he can teach you how to farm organic food the right way. Q. Do you have anything else that you would like to say or share with us? A. I would just like to stress the fact that I really do hope that the expat community learns a lot of Korean culture. I hope that the Korean culture we offer here is beneficial to them, so that they can share what have here to their home countries. It is also what I see in the GIC. Q. Is there anything you expect from the expat community as a native to Geoje yourself? A . A n o p e n a t t i t u d e ; t h e w i l l i ngness to understand our culture.

Jangseungpo NongHyup (NH) President : Mr. Soon-Ok Kwon

Know KOREA

The meaning of Chuseok (Hangawi)

Chuseok is one of Korea’s three major holidays, along with Seollal (New Year’s Day) and Dano (the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar year) and is also referred to as Hangawi (한가위). Han means “big” and gawi means “the ides of August/Autumn” (August 15th according to the lunar calendar is when the full harvest moon appears). Hangawi/Chuseok was the day on which Koreans, an agrarian people throughout most of history, gave thanks to their ancestors for the year’s harvest, and shared their abundance with family and friends. Although the exact origin of Chuseok is unclear, the tradition may be found at ancient religious practices that centered around the moon. The sun’s presence was considered routine, but the full moon that came once a month was considered a special and meaningful event. Therefore, harvest festivities took place on the day of the bright, full moon or August 15 on the lunar calendar system.

Chuseok Customs

Charye (ancestor memorial services)

On Chuseok morning, family members gather at their homes to hold memorial services (called Charye, 차례) in honor of their ancestors. Formal Charye services are held twice a year: during Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day) and Chuseok. The difference between the two services is that during Seollal the major representative food is Tteokguk, a rice cake soup, while during Chuseok the major representative foods are freshly harvested rice, alcohol and songpyeon (rice cakes). After the service, family members sit down together at the table to enjoy delicious food.

!

Beolcho (clearing the weeds around the grave) and Seongmyo (visiting ancestral graves)

Visiting ancestral graves during Chuseok is known as Seongmyo (성묘). During this visit, family members remove the weeds that have grown around the graves in the summer season, a practice which is called Beolcho (벌초). This custom is considered a duty and expression of devotion and respect for one’s family. On the weekends, about one month prior to the Chuseok holidays, Korea’s highways become extremely congested with families visiting their ancestral graves to fulfill their familial duties. The graves are then visited again during Chuseok.

Ssireum (Korean wrestling) During the match, two competitors face each other in the middle of a circular sandpit and try to pin their opponent using their strength and skills, running through a one on one tournament. The last wrestler left standing after a series of competitions is considered the winner and is named the village’s strongest man, taking home cotton, rice, or a calf as his prize.

Ganggangsullae (Korean circle dance) In this dance, women dressed in Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) join hands in a circle and sing together on a night when the full harvest moon appears or on Chuseok. There are several stories about its origin. One of the most well-known story says that the dance dates back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) when the Korean army used to dress the young women of the village in military uniforms and had them circle the mountains to look like that the Korean military was greater in number than it actually was from the enemy side. The Korean army enjoyed many victories thanks in part to this scare tactic.

Chuseokbim (Chuseok dress)

Bim refers adorning oneself with new clothes for holidays or parties. Broadly speaking, there are two bims: seolbim and chuseokbim. In the past, people adorned themselves with Korean traditional dress, hanbok, but people currently purchase new western clothes or do not prepare bim at all.

Having my son visiting from Scotland, we wanted to show him some of the traditional Korean culture. We asked our sweet Korean adopted daughter Lita to help us out! The last time he visited we went to Seoul...so, it was quite a challenge! No need to worry she excelled in her mission...I have included a small part of the history to give you some knowledge of this little gem.!!Gyeongju is a coastal city in the far south-eastern corner of North Gyeongsang Province in South Korea. It is the second largest city by area in the province after Andong, covering 511 sq miles with a population of 264,091 people. Gyeongju is 230 miles southeast of Seoul, and 34 miles east of the provincial capital, Daegu. To the east lies the coast of the Sea of Japan. Numerous low mountains—outliers of the Taebaek range—are scattered around the city.!!Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla (57 BC – 935 AD) which ruled about two-thirds of the Korean Peninsula between the 7th and 9th centuries. A vast number of archaeological sites and cultural properties from this period remain in the city. Gyeongju is often referred to as "the museum without walls". Many of the historical sites are now

designated as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and have helped Gyeongju become one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Korea. !!Places of interest:!> The Wooyang Art Museum, located next to the Hilton Hotel. Exhibitions vary.!> Donggung Wolji ( Anapji Pond ) best viewed in the evening. You have to have your car parked by 9.00pm. The evening we visited there were lots of visitors, so be prepared to arrive early / leave early to avoid the traffic! !> Large buddha at Seokguram Grotto. Though the steps are very steep!!> The grassy tombs of Cheonmachong. They let you visit inside one of them.!!Accomodation: We stayed in The Suites Hotel...clean/tidy, good breakfast and a round of putting to walk of the calories!!!Altogether a lovely weekend...!!Gail Hutchinson Tait !(with a little help from Wikipedia)!

~Support the GIC~ Hello everyone, my name is Jo and I’m the founder of the Geoje International Center or GIC for short. We provide variety of programs and events for the community. Many people come to the center to share and care for others.

Geoje has many expat people working. You are the expat people working! And most of you don’t come alone. You come here with your family. Your partners and children… What we at the GIC do is provide a cultural exchange for everyone. Your partners are placed in a foreign country, forced to adapt, and what better way than to come to a place where they can participate in programs and events, be social and be given the opportunity to find a sense of home in Korea? Not just for the partners, but also for you.

We at the GIC strive to give the expat community the chance to live in Geoje with as much ease as possible. We don’t only want your family to come here and leave with a bad image of yet alone Korea, but a positive image of everyone. By everyone I mean so because Geoje isn’t just Korean, it’s a melting pot, a melting pot of different people from all over the world.

The GIC aims to make the center a tool as a home for everyone to share and for everyone to be a part of.

I’m writing this article today, to sincerely ask you for your support in aiding the GIC. We are indeed a non profit organization, and we have so much willingness, not just me, but many other volunteers who want to help make the GIC a home for everyone, but we need your help and support to do it as well.

Please support GIC and look forward to see you all in the center!

Many Korean traditions date back centuries (some even to the B.C. era), and the use of the dojang is one of them. A dojang is a personal seal, also called a name chop, that is used to stamp important documents, either in lieu of or in addition to a signature.!

In the past, the seals were used exclusively on important documents (no signature required). And while that’s changed some today, the seals are considered more formal. It is also more traditional for the name chops to have the Hanja characters (Chinese characters) on them, but again having

hangul characters is becoming more common as well.!

Great little gift for people back home. He makes these while you wait, this is the cheapest one and it's 8,000 and for that you get the name stamp, pouch & ink pad. It's all computerized.  !

He is situated in Okpo on  the 58 just a little way down from Starbucks on the opposite side of the road.  !

You can have them made with just the Korean characters or with the English spelling and the Korean characters. !

Just be careful of these docile looking flying insects.................

On Saturday afternoon this thing was buzzing around my head in the park. I swatted it away with my hand and it stung me. The pain was awful and my finger started to swell. The sting site was a little red dot with a white circle round

and then a white area started to expand. I went to the washroom and ran it under cold water which eased the pain I then squeezed the sting site and a lot of clear liquid came out.

The pain reduced to a throb and my fingers started to swell so I took my rings off. I felt 'off' for the rest of the day.. I woke up at 4 am, my whole hand had swollen and it was extremely itchy. The swelling

went on all morning and went very hard. So of course I Googled it ........ it's a flying Asian Giant Hornet........... gee wiz you can die from these little horrors !!!

Went to the hospital, one consultation, three injections in the bum and a day's antibiotics ................ after an hour the swelling had reduced so I had knuckles again, I was tired and the itching and pain were

still there. This morning the swelling had gone and the itching has nearly gone and it is only painful to the touch.

Go to the doctors/hospital as soon as possible to reduce these symptoms. (Pauline Naylor)
