Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards G5.3.2 Differentiate between a city and a state using appropriate examples. o Student-Friendly Standards G5.3.2 I can label the capital of each state on a map. E. Procedure: 1. Ask students to raise their hands if they know the capital of Nevada. Using the Elmo, use the map of the United States to show students where Carson City is located. 2. Explain all states have one capital city and each one is located within the state. Stress that the capital is a city within the state. 3. Students will receive lyrics while before playing Wakko’s 50 State Capital Song. E. Procedure: 1. Ask students to raise their hands if they know the capital of Nevada. Using the

Elmo, use the map of the United States to show students where Carson City is located.

2. Explain all states have one capital city and each one is located within the state. Stress that the capital is a city within the state.

3. Students will receive lyrics while before playing Wakko’s 50 State Capital Song. Students will listen the first time and sing together the second time.

4. Washington D.C. is included in the song. Explain to students that it is not a state capital.

5. Students will work on the “Fill in the States” worksheet with a partner. They will fill in as many states as possible from memory. Students can refer to map for help with the remaining questions and to check their answers.

6. Students will continue working in partners to complete the word search.

7. CLOSURE: Students will sing Wakko’s 50 State Capital song once more as a class.

1. The worksheet and word search will serve as the assessment in this lesson. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the

lesson.

1. The worksheets are different from one another since one asks for the state name and the other asks for the capital. Students are able to practice with both names. Student’s answers on both worksheets will show how well students understand the capitals as they relate to each state.

They have wonderful clam chowder.
