• Fantasy films are films that usually involve magic supernatural events, make-believe creatures, or exotic fantasy worlds. The genre fantasy can overlap with other genres including science fiction and horror. Fantasy films often have an element of magic, myth, wonder, escapism, and the extraordinary.

1920s – The Silent Era.• When silent films were around because there was no sound available for

films, the most successful fantasy films included The thief of Bagdad (1924) and Die Nibelungen (1924).

• The thief of bagdad tells the story of a thief who falls in love with the daughter of the caliph of bagdad. The daughter is a princess which is one of fantasy films most popular features.

• Die Nibelungen is a series f two fantasy films also silent, it is about someone wishing to win a princess’ hand in marriage. Again a very popular feature.

1930s

• Now sound films had been invented many one of the most popular fantasy films of all time came about for all ages, the wizard of oz (1939)
