Genre Research

I have already looked into print based magazines which have given me the inspiration to do Alternative Rock as magazines such as NME, Kerrang! and Q has the layout of the magazine which I wish to produce. By textually analysing these magazines I have already looked into my targeted genre and I know feel comfortable in what I am trying to achieve. With my weekly subscription to Q magazine, I think my chosen genre will help me to clarify my work as I know what I am talking about and I’m actually part of the audience in which this genre is providing. Additionally, with most of the music on my IPod being Kasabian, Arcade Fire, The Killers and The Streets my playlist sets me up for success.

How it came around

The use of the term alternative to describe rock music originated around the mid-1980s; at the time, the common music industry terms for cutting-edge music were new music and post modern, respectively indicating freshness and a tendency to decontextualized sounds of the past.

The use of alternative gained further exposure due to the success of Lollapalooza, for which festival founder and Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell coined the term Alternative Nation.

In the late 1990s, the definition again became more specific. In 1997, Neil Strauss of The New York Times defined alternative rock as "hard-edged rock distinguished by brittle, '70s-inspired guitar riffing and singers agonizing over their problems until they take on epic proportions".

Commercialised

Throughout the 1980s, alternative rock was mainly an underground phenomenon. Alternative rock in the 1980’s were relegated to independent record labels. This type of genre can be known as Indie rock or alternative music. Alternative Rock occasionally rocked the charts with a random one time wonder hit within bands such as ‘Rolling Stones’.

Rock music is split up into many different sub-genres such as grunge, Britpop, gothic rock, indie pop, indie rock and heavy metal, these are all now known under the title Alternative Rock.

These can all be classed under the title of rock, giving the genre lots of alternative styles of music to fit different moods and categories.
