Excursion to Panorama Museum Bad Frankenhausen(for Academy members and accompanying persons only)

08.15 am Departure in front of the Dorint Hotel Charlottenhof Dorotheenstraße 12, 06108 Halle (Saale)09.30 am Arrival in Bad Frankenhausen10.00 – 11.00 am Guided Tour of the Panorama Museum11.00 – 11.30 am Documentary film „Schlacht am Bild“11.45 am Return to Halle (Saale)1.15 pm Arrival in Halle (Saale) at Dorint Hotel Charlottenhof

This year‘s excursion takes participants to the Panorama Museum in Bad Franken-hausen/Thüringen and should be seen in the context of this year’s Reformation Jubi-lee (1517-2017).On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the German Peasants‘ War in 1975, a panoramic memorial site was erected on historic grounds, on a battlefield (“Schlacht-berg”). Leipzig’s most important painter, Werner Tübke (1929-2004), designed and painted a 360° depiction of the battle. Tübke was – together with Bernhard Heisig, Heinz Zander and Wolfgang Mattheuer – a member of the “Leipziger Schule” and also served as the rector of the ”Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig ”. In 1976, he accepted the assignment under the condition that the panorama painting should also show the transition from the medieval to the modern age. The original intention of the GDR‘s cultural policy was to create a memorial site that idealised the Peasants’ War, and particularly the figure of Thomas Müntzer (1489-1525) in the sense of a socialist view of history. Tübke successfully prevented that his art was instrumental-ised in this way. First, he studied Renaissance paintings, made sketches and produced many smaller studies of the final monumental painting. Subsequently, he developed a 1:10 scale model, which later served as a template for the projection of the 360° image. After further preparatory work he began in 1983 with the actual transfer to the big screen. Tübke was temporarily supported by up to five other artists. On 16 Oc-tober 1987 he completed his work and put his signature under the finished unique painting. Due to the monumentality and the craftsmanship, the 14 x 123 meter work of art is also often referred to as the ”Sixtina of the North“.
