First we have built our program to the size that offers you more choices in quality genetics and all from one programmanaged the same—no cooperators. GCCR is ranked #2 for Simmental registrations in Nebraska and #14 nationally. We are also building aquality registered Angus herd. This year there will be 4 Angus bulls on the sale but check out our section on Angus to see what is comingfor next year.

Second you can see all the performance data, carcass data, pedigrees and epds in this catalog but you can trust that GCCR cattle must alsopass “real world” tests and meet our standards for disposition, soundness and maternal traits. And finally the bottom line—Wilson Feedyardfeeds out our steers every year and every year the steers have shown a profit.

Third, we are committed to providing customer service. In other words we expect the cattle to perform for you. We are here to help if youhave problems.

As before we are offering choices in type and style of bulls. All are bred to be balanced and to have maternal traits but there are differences inindividuals. Some have more frame and the most strength in growth and muscle such as the TopCut bulls. Some are more moderate in frameand have more strength in low birthweight calving ease and marbling such as the GAR Prophet and In Focus bulls. And most are somewherein the middle frame wise with all around balanced strengths such as the TJ Easy Money and SAV Con Air genetics. Hisequine practice includes chiropractic services, acupuncture and dentistry.Grant helped with the cattle last summer and got real good at running thethe headgate.

Drs Eric, Tori, Bella and Olivia. Eric and Tori are busy with their Optometrypractice that has offices in Grant, Ogallala and Imperial. They are expecting a new baby in May. Eric took the bull pictures.

GCCR Bull DevelopmentBulls received no creep prior to weaning. After weaning they were developedon a Purina program for gain and longevity, not high fat/gain ration. Theywere developed in a large lot.

Heifer DevelopmentHeifers received no creep prior to weaning. After weaning they were on aPurina development program and then moved to a cube and hay ration.They have been in a small pasture. The Sale Heifers will be brought toour house and penned before the sale.

Wintering/DeliveryGCCR will board any bulls not taken at the sale free until April 30th.We will work out a schedule for delivery beginning in April. Pleaselet the clerks at the Sale know the day of the Sale if you are takingthe bulls or if you want us to deliver, Please take heifers home saleday or make arrangements with us to pick them up as soon as pos-sible. We bring bulls and heifers not picked up home immediatelyafter the Sale so that we are taking care of them. The bulls aremoved to a large lot and fed a ration to harden them for breedingbut keep them in good condition.

Final Data:Actual weights will be taken shortly before the sale and a breedingsoundness exam and fertility test will be done by Dr. Lex Thompson. Genetic testing and color testing will be done in February so that it willbe ready by the 1st of March. As much data as we can by print time willbe included in the catalog – remainder will be available sale day.

MULTI-BREED CALVING EASEThe multi-breed calving ease EPDs are here! You will now see a number for calving ease (CE) and maternal calving ease (MCE) for the SimAngusanimals. Please notice that the base changed for the MCE. Which just means that the average is different than before, so make sure to take noteof the new average. Here are the current EPD averages for the Purebreds and the SimAngus:

The American Simmental Association and the American Red Angus Association have become partners for the purpose of EPD calculation. Inorder to make it easier for the customers, they have agreed to work on the same base, so this summer, watch for the EPDs to be on a new base.

The only thing you have to think about is to remember to look at the EPD averages to be able to compare the EPDs of each animal to the newaverage. It will not change the spread between any bulls or the meaning of each EPD. The base number will just be different for each trait. It willactually make it easier to compare animals across breeds.

Disposition

Quiet cattle with good disposition are a No. 1 requirement around here. Notice that the bloodlineswe bring in are high in docility. Then we cull strictly and eliminate any animal at any stage if they

are nervous or difficult to handle. Calves are socialized from an early age and handled in a quiet andeasy manner. And don’t let anybody tell you that a cow has to be aggressive to be a good mother,most of our cows are gentle but will also be very protective of a newborn. Now studies have come

out citing increased pregnancy rates with docile cattle. We have been seeing the studies showing thatquiet, calm cattle gain better and more efficiently in the feedlots. Thus there is an economic payoff to

docility along with the pleasure and increased safety of working with easy cattle.

It is our desire that bulls and females purchased from GENGENBACH CATTLE will have a long andproductive life. With that goal in mind we have implemented the following protocol:

All sale animals are ear notch tested for BVD and to this date no positive animals have been detected.All breeding females receive a pre breeding vaccination with a modified live BVD vaccine to help preventBVD persistently infected calves. At preg check cows are given killed vaccine for BVD, BRSV, IBR,Vibrio and Lepto. Calves receive vaccine for BVD, BRSV, IBR, Pasteurella and Clostridium in the springand at pre weaning and weaning. Cattle are dewormed in the fall with Dectomax injectable and treatedfor lice and grubs at that time also. Sale bulls and heifers will be poured with Dectomax prior to sale.

We kept this younger bull because at weaning he weighed as much as many older calves. Out of a lowbirthweight dam this combination worked and he has continued his growth post weaning.

5/8 SM 3/8 AN Son of TJ Bonus Beef we retained. His dam is the legendary “Cookie” show heifer of our grandson, Grant. CB as we call him sired our topgrowth and top selling bull in 2012’s sale. He is a 6 frame plus, who sires a show look phenotype and exceptional growth.

With feed costs high, in today’s cattle feeding environment, you need an animal thatwill perform efficiently and hang a carcass that will generate premiums above “average”cattle. We have been feeding Gengenbach Cattle Co calves for the last seven years andthey have proven that they can do both. The gains are well above the yard average andthe conversions are as well. We have been marketing these cattle through the USPremium Beef grid in the spring and early summer. This grid works well for cattlethat grade choice and dress above the plant average as do the Gengenbach cattle. Thedisposition of the cattle is excellent which makes everyones’ job easier. It has been apleasure feeding Randy and Mary Jo’s cattle.

Lot 2 at Schaff’s 2012 Angus sale, Con Air was the lead off bull of the SAV Brand Name sire group. Kelly Schaff and Bob guided us to Con Air because we wanted docility, moderate birthweight, pheno-type and style with as much maternal and growth performance as we could get. One of their “A” rated bulls, Con Air according to Kelly and Bob was “one of the stoutest hipped bulls in the sale”. Excel-

lent fertility as we were able to get him collected and freeze quality semen right after the sale so that we were able to use him both natural service and AI. We are using him for daughters to build ourregistered Angus herd and to cross on our Simmental. He sires his own phenotype so that his calves are stylish, stout, long and deep ribbed with a big middle. Birthweights have been low to moderate,

growth and carcass has been good to excellent. There won’t be as many comments with his sons because they are so much alike.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDsare the most accurate and effective toolavailable for comparing genetic levels. Inusing EPDs, the difference between twosires’ EPDs represents the unit difference ex-pected in the performance of their progeny.For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of+10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be ex-pected in their progeny (moving from -5 to+10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs isknowing what units they are expressed in.For example, if the above case referred toweaning weight EPDs, A would be expectedto sire 15-pounds more weaning weight thanB. If calving ease were the trait, A would beexpected to sire 15-percent more unassistedbirths in first-calf heifers; in other words, ifB sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers,we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A per-centile-ranking chart is required to deter-mine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relativeto other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparisonof genetic levels for many economically impor-tant traits, they only provide a piece of the eco-nomic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes comein. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathe-matical computation, $ indexes blend EPDsand economics to estimate an animal’s overallimpact on your bottom line. The same technol-ogy that led to the dramatic progress in swine,poultry and dairy genetics over the last sev-eral decades was used to develop the following$ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for useon the entire cow herd (bred to both Angusfirst-calf heifers and mature cows) with theportion of their daughters required to main-tain herd size retained and the remainingheifers and steers put on feed and sold gradeand yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on ma-ture Angus cows with all offspring put on feedand sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index touse; if you’re keeping replacements use API, ifnot, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in onthe unit difference between bulls. (As de-scribed above, index units are in dollars percow exposed.) The difference can be used todetermine how much a bull is worth comparedto another. Or, put another way, how muchyou can pay for one bull compared to another.For example, when buying an all-purpose-typesire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A per-centile-ranking chart is required to determinewhere a bull’s index value ranks him relativeto other bulls in the breed.
