Genetics Calculator Use
Genetics requires some calculations, so you will be provided a calculator during each Genetics
test • The calculator models you may be provided include:– Sharp EL‐501X– Texas Instruments TI‐30XA
Texas Instruments TI‐30XASharp EL‐501X
Genetics Calculator Use
• These calculator models are provided because they enable the simple calculations needed to complete the test you are given.
• You can use these slides to familiarize yourself with the buttons on each calculator model.
• Let’s look at a few example calculations…
Turn your calculator “On” with the “On/c” button
Example Calculations
• In a test problem, you may need to square a number… – For example :
To calculate 2 ,you can enter “2” in the calculator and press the button which gives the answer of 4
Example Calculations
• To Calculate the square root of a number…– For example :
To calculate 4,you can enter “4” in the calculator and press the button which gives the answer of 2
Example Calculations
• To raise a number to a power other than 2– For example :
To calculate 2 ,you can enter “2” in the calculator and press the button and then press “3” and
“=“ gives the answer of 8
Example Calculations
• In the Probability section of the course, you will need to calculate factorials using the probability formula:
!! !
• A factorial is a non‐negative integer, n, represented as n! that is the product of all positive integers less than or equal to n
• For example…– 4! = 4 x 3 x 2 x 1
To calculate 4!,you can enter “4” in the calculator and press the “2nd” button. 2nd functions are listed above each button on the calculator. Next press “CE” on the Sharp EL‐501X OR press “3” on the Texas Instruments TI‐30XA since the factorial is listed above these buttons as n! or x!. This gives the answer of 24.
Example Calculations
• Alternatively, you can calculate factorials by simplifying…
– For example: !!=
= 5
Example Calculations
We have now covered most of the main calculator buttons you may use during a
Genetics test.
Turn your calculator “Off” before returning the calculator when you turn‐in your test.
