Genesis 12 Summary:

Genesis 12 centers on the %romises that God ma/es to Abram AbrahamBD it is a test

o! Abrams !aith in God because God calls on Abram to leave his home, ta/e his !amily, and move onto a new homeland. God however, %romises Abram that i! he will obey him,

he will ma/e Abram the !ather o! a (reat nation, and that he will bless Abram and those

who bless him, but curse those who curse him. <hen Abram reaches the land where God

wants Abram and his descendants to %ros%er, He lets Abram /nowD Abram then builds analtar to than/ God !or brin(in( them to where He intends Abram to become the !ather o!

nations. However, a severe !amine in the land means that Abram 5ourneys !arther south, and he ends u% in )(y%t. Abrams wi!e arai is beauti!ul, and Abram !ears that an

)(y%tian will desire arai and, !indin( out she is his wi!e, will have Abram /illed. o,

Abram tells arai that i! anyone does as/, she is his sister because he !eels that it will besa!er !or them all. As Abram !ears, several %rinces o! 0haraoh see how lovely arai is,

and they tell him all about her. 0haraoh is intri(ued and has arai ta/en to his home, and

0haraoh treats Abram well because he believes that she is his sister. 0haraoh (ives Abram

several varieties o! livestoc/ and male and !emale servants, all because he wants to %leasethe >brother? o! the woman he has ta/en into his home. However, because arai is

Abrams wi!e, God sends %la(ues onto 0haraoh and his household, and when 0haraoh

reali7es what is (oin( on, he sends !or Abram to con!ront him. 0haraoh as/s Abram whyhe would lie to him about arai bein( his wi!e, and that it is his !ault that these %la(ues

have come about because God is %unishin( him !or almost ta/in( another mans wi!e as

his own. 0haraoh then commands Abram to ta/e arai and leave, and even commands hismen to ensure that Abram leaves !orthwith.

Questions:

A =uestion that I cannot hel% but as/, is why Abram did not trust God to ensure that hewould %rotect him in )(y%tian, when God has already told him that He will ma/e Abram

the !ather o! nations@

I am also curious as to why God would send %la(ues onto someone who has been du%ed

into believin( that arai was a !ree woman, instead o! the wi!e she was@ <hy would God

want to %unish someone who is truly innocent in /nowled(e o! wron(doin(@

A third =uestion I !ind is why would arai a(ree to such an arran(ement@ <hy would she

be willin( to leave her own husband and !amily, to become the wi!e o! someone she

doesnt even really /now, even i! she is worried that 0haraoh may cause Abram harm@ I!

she did marry 0haraoh, wouldnt she essentially be lost to Abram anyways@

Genesis 15-17 summary:

ha%ters !i!teen, si4teen, and seventeen o! Genesis cover the covenant that God

ma/es with Abram, the way arai and Abram try to ma/e !ul!ill the %romise in the waythey thin/ will wor/, and the %hysical si(n that God will re=uire o! Abram and his

descendants as %roo! o! their willin(ness to %arta/e in the covenant that God has made

with Abram. ha%ter !i!teen starts with God tellin( Abram to not be a!raid because he isAbrams shield and He is (oin( to reward Abram e4ceedin(ly. Abram, however, is

=uestionin( God and remindin( him that he is childless, and the heir o! his household is a

child not his own. God res%onds to him that, that child is not his heir, that Abram needs to

have !aith that God will (ive him an heir !rom his own body. God tells him to try to countthe stars because that will be the number o! descendants he will have. Abram !inally

decides to have !aith in God, and when directed, Abram brin(s God a sacri!ice. God does

tell him that Abrams descendants will have troubles bein( slaves in a distant landB, but

that they will come bac/ to their own and be richer !or it. ha%ter !i!teen ends with Godtellin( Abram all the lands that will be his descendants.

ha%ter si4teen shows arais lac/ o! !aith in the timeline o! Gods %lan and she

convinces Abram that the best way !or him to have an heir, is !or him to ta/e her

)(y%tian handmaiden, Ha(ar, as another wi!e. he reasons with him that throu(h Ha(ar,he can have the child that she believes God is %romisin( since she has been unable to

(ive Abram a child. Abram a(rees, ta/es Ha(ar as his wi!e, and she conceives a child.

Ha(ar then be(ins to try to vaunt her %osition and throw derision on arai, so arai (ets

u%set and reali7es she was wron( to convince Abram to ta/e this course o! action. he(oes into Abram and tells him that she /nows she was wron( and that Ha(ar is ma/in(

li!e more di!!icult, so she wants him to do somethin( about it. Abram tells her that Ha(ar

is still her handmaiden and leaves her to deal with the situation, which she does in a harshmanner. #he cha%ter closes with Ha(ar !leein( out into the wilderness, where God sends

an an(el to tell Ha(ar that her child will be the !ather o! his own (reat multitude, thou(h

he will be at war with most o! humanity. God convinces Ha(ar to then return to arai andAbram, which she does, and she bears Abram a son when Abram is ei(hty-si4 years old.

ha%ter seventeen covers what si(n God re=uires o! Abram and his descendants

as %hysical %roo! o! their covenant with God. God chan(es Abrams name !rom toAbraham because he will be the !ather o! many nations. God will ma/e Abraham

e4ceedin(ly !ruit!ul and he has established a covenant with Abraham and his

descendants. God tells Abraham that his descendants will have the land o! anaan astheir everlastin( %ossession. #he %hysical si(n that God re=uires o! Abraham and his

descendants is that all male children will be circumcised by the time they are ei(ht days

old and that any male servants who have been bou(ht and brou(ht into the householdmust also be circumcised. God re=uires Abraham to also be circumcised, and He tells

Abraham that his wi!e arai will no lon(er be named arai, but rather arah because she

will be the mother o! Abrahams heir and will be /nown as the mother o! nations.

Abraham lau(hs at God tellin( him that both he and arah will be %arents because

Abraham is then nearly one-hundred years old and arah is ninety. Abraham doesnt see

how %eo%le as old as themselves could ever have children, so Abraham mentioned that he

does have a son already named Ishmael, wont God acce%t him and the heir. God correctsAbraham and tells him once a(ain that arah is the woman who will be the mother o!

Abrahams heir, and thou(h God will bless Ishmael, he is not (oin( to be the member o!

Abrahams !amily who will carry the %romise o! the covenant with God. As cha%terseventeen ends, Abraham ta/es his son Ishmael and all the males o! his household and

they are circumcised that day.

Questions:

 ha%ter 1B- Ene o! the thin(s that I have a =uestion about is that in verse si4 it says

that Abram believed in the $ords %romise, and yet in the !ollowin( verses he is

=uestionin( how he can /now !or sure that God will !ollow throu(h with the %romise o!lettin( him inherit the land. o i! Abraham can be accounted !or !aith in belie! that God

will (ive him children, why would he have a hard time believin( that God will (ive him

the land !or his descendants too@

Another =uestion I have is why did God (ive Abraham the vision o! how di!!icult it

would be !or his descendants@ How could Abraham want to then have children i! he/nows that his heirs will have to (o throu(h somethin( so di!!icult@

#he last =uestion I have about cha%ter !i!teen is, was the smo/in( oven and burnin( torchthat %assed over the o!!erin( Abraham brou(ht somethin( that God did, or was it

Abraham !inally !inishin( the sacri!ice@

ha%ter 16B- Havin( dealt with !ertility issues with my own wi!e, cha%ter si4teen reallyhit home, and I su%%ose the =uestion that !irst and !oremost comes to mind is why

Abraham would so willin( (o alon( with arahs %lan@ I understand the need !or an heir,

but i! Abraham had com%lete !aith in Gods ability to %rovide him with an heir, whywould he ever a(ree to ta/in( his wi!es handmaid as another o%tion@

I also wonder why Ha(ar thou(ht it was o/ay to start loo/in( down on arah sim%ly because she had conceived a child, yet she would never have been in that %osition i!

arah had not %ut her there.

Fy !inal =uestion about this cha%ter is that I wonder how Ishmael have !elt when hehears that he is not to be the heir o! Abraham and Gods covenant@ I would ima(ine that

he had to !eel some 5ealousy, but did Abraham treat him as a >second-class? citi7en, and

i! so, how could he do that to his own child@

ha%ter 1&B- #he !irst =uestion that comes to mind, on this cha%ter, is what is the

si(ni!icance o! God chan(in( Abraham and arahs names@ I understand it was tore%resent their bein( the !ather and mother o! multitudes, but why chan(e the names@

Fy second =uestion I have to %onder is how Abraham must have !elt when God told him

that the %hysical si(n o! their covenant is that Abraham and all the males o! the household

Page 9: Genesis Outline

must be circumcised@ <hat would the rest o! his !amily have thou(ht about it, and how

honestly, how willin( was everyone to (o alon( with such an act@

#he !inal =uestion I have !or cha%ter seventeen is why the wait !or ei(ht days be!ore theact o! circumcision !or each male child@ I am aware that there was some belie! that a

certain amount o! time had to %ass be!ore %arents were willin( to tal/ about the name o!

the child, but what is the si(ni!icance o! the ei(ht days@

Chapter 27 summary:

ha%ter twenty-seven encom%asses 9acob !oolin( his !ather, Isaac, out o! the blessin(that was su%%osed to be his older brother )saus. Isaac has by this time (rown into an old

man, hes (rown blind, and he /nows he is (ettin( ready to die. Isaac calls )sau to him

and tells his oldest son that he wants him to (o out into the wilderness, /ill some (ame,

brin( it bac/ to ma/e a savory meal, and then Isaac will (ive )sau a blessin(. )sau thensets out to do so, yet Isaacs wi!e 8ebe/ah has overheard this %lan, and wantin( her

!avorite, 9acob, to receive the blessin(, she (oes to 9acob and tells him what is (oin( on.

8ebe/ah then devises the %lan o! dis(uisin( 9acob as )sau, so that he can steal the

blessin( !or himsel!. 9acob tries to ma/e her reali7e that Isaac will /now it is him because he isnt hairy li/e his brother, but 8ebe/ah has a %lan !or that too. 9acob !ollows

his mothers %lan, and thou(h Isaac initially sus%ects that he is bein( !ooled, 9acobmana(es to convince Isaac enou(h to obtain the blessin(. o sooner has 9acob received

the blessin( and le!t his !athers tent, than )sau arrives with his o!!erin( to his !ather.

Isaac is in disbelie! that he has been !ooled, but )sau is an(ry and still be(s !or his !atherto (ive him a blessin(. Isaac tells him that he cant (ive him the blessin( her ori(inally

was (oin( to because he had already (iven it to 9acob, but he does eventually (ive him

the only blessin( he can. As Isaac be(ins to wea/en, )sau determines in his heart that

once the days o! mournin( !or his !ather are done, he is (oin( to /ill 9acob. 9acob hadalready stolen )saus birthri(ht and now he had stolen his blessin(, so )sau is

understandably u%set. 8ebe/ah learns that )sau %lans to murder his brother so she %lans

to send 9acob o!! to her brother until thin(s cool down and )sau is not as an(ry. 8ebe/ahthen tells 9acob that she wants to send 9acob o!! so that he can !ind a wi!e, and the

cha%ter ends with her be((in( Isaac to understand that she wants 9acob to marry a

woman !rom her homeland so she will be treated well in her old a(e.

Questions:

#he !irst =uestion I have about this cha%ter is how a mother could desire the down!all o!

one son in !avor o! another@ 8ebe/ah already /new that 9acob had ta/en )saus birthri(ht, so why would she encoura(e her son to steal the blessin( !rom him as well@

Fy second =uestion is what /ind o! role-model does 9acob really show by bein( willin(to ta/e %art in the %lan that mother has come u% with@ <hy would God want this /ind o!

%erson to be the heir and %ro(enitor o! his chosen %eo%le@

inally my last =uestion why would Isaac %ut the !act that )sau would have to serve his

brother in the blessin( that he bestows on )sau@ <hy ma/e )sau !eel even more li/e hes

been robbed by addin( that@ id )sau !eel that way about it@
