Fill the Earth (not relenish)

Dr. Henry Morris says (1:28, Defenders Study Bible), “God’s first command to man was that of producing abundant progeny sufficient to fill the earth (not replenish, a misleading translation of the Hebrew word male).”

Genesis Record, pg. 76, “The King James translation used the term “replenish”, but this does not suggest the idea of “refilling” either in the Old English term itself or the Hebrew word from which it is translated. The Hebrew word is male, and means simply “fill,” “fulfill,” or “be filled.” Of the more than 300 times it is used, it is translated (in KJV) by “replenish” only 7 times; and even these could as well have been rendered “fill”. It is certainly erroneous to use this one verse as a proof text for the gap theory, as many have done.”

God Wants Us To Be fruitful

Is birth control contrary to God’s command and will?

I’m only aware of one reference to birth control in the Bible.

Gen 38:10 What he did was wicked in the Lord's sight; so he put him to death also.

Fill The Earth And Subdue It

Gen 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Subdue It

Verse 28 is God’s first command to humans and with it He inaugurates the first of many “dispensations.”

Dispensational Pattern

God gives a command as an expression of His will

Man breaks God commandment God punishes mans rebellion God institutes another dispensation

Jesus Taught About Dispensations

Matt 11:11-12 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Matt 5:17-18 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Matt 26:29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."

Acts 1:6-8 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The NT Teaches Dispensations

Eph 1:9-11 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him 10 with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him…NASU

Eph 3:8-9…to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God…NASU

1 Tim 1:4…myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. NASU

Logic and Reason Demand It

Could Adam and Eve had a right relationship with God if they never ate from that tree?

Could we had a right relationship with God if we never ate from any tree?

God changes not! So what’s the deal? God does deal with different people in various

ways during different time periods. Go command an ax head to float, oceans to

divide, water to turn to blood or wine, or the dead to rise up and walk. Nothing! Did God change?

Why The Word Dispensation?

Dispensation, Administration

House Law

oivkonomi,an noun accusative feminine singular common

[UBS] oivkonomi,a, management of a household; task, work, responsibility; (divine) plan (Eph1.10; 3.9; 1 Tm 1.4)

We get English “economy” from it

Vegetarians, Man & Beasts

Gen 1:29-30 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground — everything that has the breath of life in it — I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

Seed-bearing plants Almost all of our vegetables are seed-

bearing plants When pollination occurs, the seeds

start to develop, triggering a hormone change, which stimulates fruit growth.

Every tree that has fruit with seed in it. Not the tree dummy But the fruit with seed in it. They will

be yours for food. Some think that this verse is saying to

eat the fruit and seed in it. Kent Hovind tells of a culture that

grows lots of apricots and eats the seeds and have zero cancer.

Vegetarianism, Is It Biblical?

Gen 9:2-3 The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. 3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

Acts 10:12-13 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."

Mark 14:12-18…it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"….So they prepared the Passover…..one of you will betray me — one who is eating with me."

Luke 24:41-43…."Do you have anything here to eat?" 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

It Was All Very Good

If God said it was very good how good do you suppose it was.

Gen. 1:31 had to be before all the death, disease, disaster, and destruction revealed in the fossil record, also the fall of 1/3 of God’s angels and Satan, man losing sovereignty over earth, and Satan becoming “the god of this age” (2Cor. 4:4) and “the present evil age” (Gal. 1:4).

Page 33: Genesis, ch 1, #5, ch. 1;27 31, 2012, dispensations, vegetarianism, progressive revelation, not replenish, be fruitful, dna

It Was All Very Good

Ezek 28:12-14 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: "'You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. 13 You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. 14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones.

Page 34: Genesis, ch 1, #5, ch. 1;27 31, 2012, dispensations, vegetarianism, progressive revelation, not replenish, be fruitful, dna

It Was All Very Good

Gen 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning — the sixth day.

Keep in mind that this is after Eve was created.

Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

So it’s not a problem when God says; Gen 2:18 The Lord God said, "It is not good

for the man to be alone.

Page 35: Genesis, ch 1, #5, ch. 1;27 31, 2012, dispensations, vegetarianism, progressive revelation, not replenish, be fruitful, dna

It Was All Very Good

John MacArthur says (in his MacArthur Study Bible) about 1:31 “very good”, “What had been pronounced good individually (vv. 4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25) was now called “very good” collectively. The words anticipated God’s conclusion that it was “not good” for a man to be alone (2:18), which occurred on the sixth day.”

John’s use of “anticipated God’s conclusion” confuses me. Chapter 2:18 chronologically comes (in the broader view of chapter 1) in Gen 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; [Chapter 2:18-23] male and female he created them.”

Page 36: Genesis, ch 1, #5, ch. 1;27 31, 2012, dispensations, vegetarianism, progressive revelation, not replenish, be fruitful, dna

It Was All Very Good

Each days conclusion of, “it was good”, refers to that days work. It is not addressing the fact that all the work of creation week was not finished (“not good”). God’s statement that it was “not good for a man to be alone” in 2:18, had to occurred on the sixth day, after creating male and before creating female.

INTELLIGENT DESIGN NEWS    8.31.2012 9:19PM DNA Stores Data More Efficiently than Anything We've Created Casey Luskin August 29, 2012 12:39 PM | Permalink A fasincating story at ExtremeTech.com, "Harvard cracks DNA storage, crams 700 terabytes of data into a single gram," reports that Harvard scientists

have broken the record for the data storage density in DNA. According to the story, they "successfully stored 5.5 petabits of data -- around 700 terabytes -- in a single gram of DNA, smashing the previous DNA data density record by a thousand times." To give an idea of how much information that is, Wikipedia reports that Google processes about 25 petabits of information each day. So this method, apparently, could store all of Google's daily information in less than 5 grams of DNA. The ExtremeTech.com article puts it this way:

Just think about it for a moment: One gram of DNA can store 700 terabytes of data. That's 14,000 50-gigabyte Blu-ray discs... in a droplet of DNA that would fit on the tip of your pinky. To store the same kind of data on hard drives -- the densest storage medium in use today -- you'd need 233 3TB drives, weighing a total of 151 kilos. In Church and Kosuri's case, they have successfully stored around 700 kilobytes of data in DNA -- Church's latest book, in fact -- and proceeded to make 70 billion copies (which they claim, jokingly, makes it the best-selling book of all time!) totaling 44 petabytes of data stored.

So how did they do it? According to the article, the project treats DNA as just another digital storage device. Instead of binary data being encoded as magnetic regions on a hard drive platter, strands of DNA that

store 96 bits are synthesized, with each of the bases (TGAC) representing a binary value (T and G = 1, A and C = 0). And of course, what this means is "Scientists have been eyeing up DNA as a potential storage medium for a long time." There are good reasons for this: First, the article reports DNA is "incredibly dense (you can store one bit per base, and a base is only a few atoms large)." Second, DNA is "volumetric (beaker) rather than planar (hard disk)," again meaning you can pack it in efficiently. Finally, DNA is "incredibly stable -- where other bleeding-edge storage mediums need to be kept in sub-zero vacuums, DNA can survive for hundreds of

thousands of years in a box in your garage." This means that unlike magnetic hard drives which have a comparatively short lifespan, DNA could store data for a long time.

Nothing made by humans can approach these kind of specs. Who would have thought that DNA can store data more efficiently than anything we've created. But DNA wasn't designed -- right?

Acts and Facts, Dr. Larry Vardiman

“Mitochondrial DNA and a Recent Human Origin.” A team of scientists that includes Dr. Daniel Criswell of ICR

has …completed a study of mitochondrial DNA …[presented at]…International Conference on Creationism… the mitochondrion has its own small DNA molecule and this DNA is passed down from mother to child. The study has revealed an unexpected lack of diversity within worldwide human mitochondrial lineages, despite high mutation rates, and this supports the idea that humanity is only a few thousand years old.

…it contains several interesting tenets: 1) there was a single dispersal of mankind with three main mitochondrial lineages interspersed within clans; 2) the dispersion was centered in the Middle East in the recent past; 3) the dispersion was essentially tribal in nature, with small groups pushing into previously uninhabited territory; and 4) genetic evidence indicates that male lineages are much more geographically specific than female lineages, with female migration rates up to eight times greater than males. This latter tenet is an expression of the Babel account in Genesis, where the initial, well-mixed population split up and migrated according to paternal lineage. The biblical model fits very well with data collected in these evolutionary studies.

The ICR team began an exploration of changes in mitochondrial DNA by collecting and culling publicly-available human DNA …. Eve 1.0, is nearly identical to the original mitochondrial sequence--that of Eve, the first woman and the mother of every person who has ever lived. And because the mitochondrial genome is subject to high mutation rates, the lack of significant worldwide variation is evidence for a young mitochondrial genome. The complete paper, The "Eve" Mitochondrial Consensus Sequence…presented at the 6th International Conference on Creationism in Pittsburgh, PA, in August 2008.
