INTRODUCTION

While much has been said or written on the subject, the best place to look for sound teaching on generosity

is the Bible itself. Both Old and New Testaments present generous living and giving as fundamental to the

GOD IS EXCEEDINGLY GENEROUS2 Corinthians 8:9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your

sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

Genesis 1:29-30And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of

the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

Psalm 65:9-10You visit the earth and water it; you greatly enrich it You water its furrows abundantly,

GODS HEART FOR THE POORLuke 6:20Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

Deuteronomy 10:18He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner,

giving him food and clothing.

1 Samuel 2:8He raises the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit

with princes and inherit a seat of honor.

Psalm 68:5Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.

Psalm 69:33For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise his own people who are prisoners.

Psalm 113:7-9He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit

with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren women a home, making her the joyous

mother of children. Praise the LORD!

Proverbs 14:31 Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy

honors him.

Proverbs 15:25 The LORD tears down the house of the proud but maintains the widows boundaries.

Proverbs 19:17Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his

Proverbs 10:22The blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

Genesis 1:31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.

1 Chronicles 29:12Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all.

Psalm 112:1, 3 Blessed is the man who fears the LORD Wealth and riches are in his house

PERILS OF PROSPERITY

Luke 6:24But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

Proverbs 11:28He who trusts in his riches will fall

Isaiah 5:8Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and

you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.

Hosea 10:1-2The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built; as his country improved, he

improved his pillars. Their heart is false; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their

altars and destroy their pillars.

Matthew 13:22[T]he deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

Matthew 19:24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich

person to enter the kingdom of God.

Luke 12:15And he said to them, Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for ones

JOY OF GENEROSITY

Acts 20:35It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Deuteronomy 26:10-11 And you shall set [the first fruits] down before the LORD your God and worship

before the LORD your God. And you shall rejoice in all the good that the LORD your God has given to you

and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you.

Nehemiah 8:10-12Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready,

for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

Nehemiah 12:43And they offered great sacrifices that day and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice

with great joy; the women and children also rejoiced. And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away.

Psalm 112:5It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with

justice.

Proverbs 11:24One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to

poverty.

Proverbs 11:25A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children

PARTICIPATING IN GODS GENEROSITY

Matthew 10:8Freely you have received, freely give. (NIV)

1 Chronicles 29:14But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly?

For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.

Psalm 112:9He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures forever (NIV)

Matthew 5:42Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from

you.

Matthew 10:38-39And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever

finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

Luke 3:8a, 10-11Produce fruit in keeping with repentance ... ... What should we do then? the crowd

asked. John answered, The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who

has food should do the same. (NIV)

Luke 8:1-3 Jesus traveled about proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were

with him, and also some women who ... were helping to support them out of their own means. (NIV)

Luke 14:27, 33In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my

disciple... any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.John 15:12-13 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love

Ephesians 5:1-2Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us

GENEROSITY AND JUSTICE

Deuteronomy 10:18He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner,

people, give deliverance to the children of the needy May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass,

GENEROSITY AND TITHING

Matthew 23:23Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin,

and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought

to have done, without neglecting the others.

Leviticus 27:30 Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the

LORDs; it is holy to the LORD.

Numbers 18:26Moreover, you shall speak and say to the Levites, When you take from the people of

Israel the tithe that I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present a contribution

from it to the LORD, a tithe of the tithe.

Deuteronomy 14:22-29You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year.

And before the LORD your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall

eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you

Deuteronomy 26:1-2 When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an

inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of

the ground, which you harvest from your land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in

a basket, and you shall go to the place that the LORD your God will choose, to make his name to dwell

there.

Malachi 3:8-10 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, How have we robbed you? In

your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you.

LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess

Deuteronomy 23:19You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, intereston food, interest on anything that is lent for interest.

Jeremiah 29:7Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its

behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

Luke 14:12-14

Acts 2:44-45And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling

their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

Acts 4:32-37Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said

that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common There was

GENEROSITY AND MISSION

Genesis 12:1-3I will bless you and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Acts 11:27-30Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them

named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this

took place in the days of Claudius). So the disciples determined, everyone according to his ability, to send

relief to the brothers living in Judea. And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and

Saul.

Romans 15:25 At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. For Macedonia

and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. For

they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their

spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. When therefore I have

completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected, I will leave for Spain by way of you.

1 Corinthians 16:1-4Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia,

2 Corinthians 8:1-7 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among

the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme

poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as

I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part

in the relief of the saints and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then

Galatians 2:9-10[W]hen James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace

that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the

Gentiles and they to the circumcised. Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager

2 Corinthians 9:12-15For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is

also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God

because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of yourcontribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing

grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!

Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing

to God.

James 1:27Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and

widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

GIVING WISELY

Galatians 6:10So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who

are of the household of faith.

Proverbs 19:17 He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has

done.

Matthew 6:1-4Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them,

for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy,

sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be

praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do

not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your

Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Matthew 6:19-21 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and

where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth norrust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will

be also.

Luke 14:12-14 When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your

relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast,

invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you.

plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality1 Timothy 6:17-19As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their

hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to

do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for

themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
