WATER SAVINGS

Water can be saved through: infrastructure investment; improved coordination; or behavioral change-measures with different costs & time scales. While 40% water savings could be achieved from technological improvements, this value is the sum of a series of different actions. Based on water resources management experience, it can be roughly estimated that improving coordination among actors could lead to water savings between 5 and 8%, with smart metering providing an additional 8 to 10%. WatERP technological solution gives response to the coordination among actors building a smart water solution.

OBJECTIVES

1. Facilitate multiple-scalable decisions:

Across geographic scales (from

hilltop to ocean), across

organizational scales (regulator, bulk

water supplier, water utilities,..) and

across jurisdiction levels (National,

Regional and Local).

2. Interconnect, through standardized

SOA-MAS ICT architecture,

subsystems that control and manage

the production, management and

consumption of water

3. Develop a web-based Open

Management Platform (OMP) for

water resource managers integrating

near real-time knowledge from

developed building blocks (DSS &

DMS) and supported by an ontology

driven knowledge base on water

supplies and water usage.

MAIN OUTCOMES

WatERP Water Management Ontology The Water Management Ontology encompasses the water cycle from its management perspective with the aim to establish recommendations and alerts regarding actions taken or decisions made concerning its various control and management systems.

Page 13: GENERAL PRESENTATION - EIP Water General Presentation.pdf · GENERAL PRESENTATION Gabriel Anzaldi ganzaldi@bdigital.org Phone. +34 93 553 45 40 M. +34 619 11 36 72

MAIN OUTCOMES

WatERP ICT Architecture The communication architecture will focus on providing intelligent and near real-time linkage between the various water supply distribution chain management tools or systems (Data Management Systems, Decision Support systems, Demand Management Systems, Weather Forecast Systems, etc.) and the OMP by implementing a SOA-MAS architecture.

MAIN OUTCOMES

WatERP Water Data Warehouse (WDW) A central topic of the project (which is also the basis for all other intelligent support functionalities) is the implementation of intelligent, yet efficient, management of a large amount of data of static, real time and near real-time character, coming from a number of heterogeneous sources (and which should also allow for the easy integration of new data sources).

Page 15: GENERAL PRESENTATION - EIP Water General Presentation.pdf · GENERAL PRESENTATION Gabriel Anzaldi ganzaldi@bdigital.org Phone. +34 93 553 45 40 M. +34 619 11 36 72

MAIN OUTCOMES

WatERP Decision Support Systems (DSS ) One of the key features in this project is the design and development of a Decision Support System (Water DSS) which will provide recommendations based on inferred knowledge to help achieve the overall objective of matching an accurate supply to the forecasted demand across the whole water supply distribution chain and contributes to the reduction of energy consumption.

Page 16: GENERAL PRESENTATION - EIP Water General Presentation.pdf · GENERAL PRESENTATION Gabriel Anzaldi ganzaldi@bdigital.org Phone. +34 93 553 45 40 M. +34 619 11 36 72

MAIN OUTCOMES

WatERP Demand Management System (DMS) This building block will be focused on the demand-side of the water supply distribution chain, with the aim to enhance capabilities and provide information and analysis tools for generating real-time usage consumption data and forecasted future demands. This information will feed the Decision Support System such that supply can be matched with demand. Over the long-term, these tools would support planning and assessment of policy instruments for water conservation and efficient water use. Through the exploitation of the knowledge base, as well as real-time water consumption monitoring, the DMS will develop communication tools to enhance awareness among water users towards water conservation.

MAIN OUTCOMES

WatERP Open Management Platform (OMP) The WatERP Open Management Platform is an information hub, which will support decision making at different stages such as water supply and demand (and forecasting), determining water consumption patterns, water allocation decisions, etc., enabling knowledge-based water governance to be achieved throughout the water supply distribution chain.
