Pre-Visit Story
Ways I Will See
• There are many things to see at
the National Museum of Natural
History.
• I can look up and I can look down.
I can go left or I can go right.
• It is a very big museum and I will
stay with my adult.
• I will look at one thing at a time.
• I might not get to see everything.

Lighting
• Some exhibits are darker than the rest.
• This is to help protect the objects that are on display.
• Some objects are very old, and very delicate: even light can
damage them.

Things I May Hear or Watch
• There are many sounds to hear
in the Museum.
• There are many videos to watch.
• I might see a video of a scientist
on a boat. Or of about mammals.
• If it is too noisy for me I will let
my adult know so we can take a
break.

On Exhibit
• I will see different kinds of things on display.
• I will see living animals and insects.
• I will see animals that used to be living

• I will see models. They are made to look like living animals, but
they were never alive.
• I will see fossils. They were alive a long time ago.

• There are things I can touch in the exhibit that will teach me
about natural history.
• There are drawers I can open carefully.
• There are replicas of fossils.
• There are interactive computers that I can use.
Ocean Hall
• When I am at the National Museum of Natural History, I can visit
the Ocean Hall.
• This exhibit tells the story of the ocean and the plants and
animals that live in it.

African Voices
• I can visit the African Voices exhibit.
• In it I can learn about the people who live in Africa.

Hall of Human Origins Exhibit
• I can visit the Hall of Human Origins.
• The Hall of Human Origins Exhibit tells the story of how
humans have changed over the last 6 million years.

• I can visit the Mammals Hall.
• The Mammals Hall tells the story
of many different mammals.
• Mammals are a type of animal.

• There are many things to explore in the Natural History
Museum.
• If I find something scary I do not have to look at it.
• I can let my adult know and we can keep walking.
