Common Core Objectives: 2 nd Grade Writing Standard 2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. Preparation: Before the lesson I need to gather art materials and load Map Parts on the eBook website. Preparation: Before the lesson I need to gather art materials and load Map Parts on the eBook website. I also need to have the materials for my sample map prepared.

25 minutes Connecting Activity:As a whole group, students will help me put together a sample map. We will make sure to place the map elements in the correct place on the map and review each element.Next, the students will be drawing their own maps of an important place. We will brainstorm a list of ideas of places the students can map. (Example: bedroom, school, house, park, etc.) Students will then use art materials to make their own

15 minutes Individual Activity:After students have completed their map, they will write an informative writing piece about the place they chose to map. Their writing will include details about the place and why it is important to them. I will explicitly model an informative writing piece by writing about our sample map.

5 minutes Closure/Assessment:Have each student share their map with a partner. When sharing student must share their title, compass rose, symbols, and legends with their parent.
