The NextLevel Commander MultichannelTelevision Sound (CMTS) Encoderenables cable operators to upgrade to truestereo TV sound. The CMTS is aneconomical means of upgrading systemcapabilities and subscriber servicepackages, thereby increasing overallsystem revenues. It allows a systemoperator to easily encode both stereo andsecondary audio programming (SAP) fortransmission and includes dbx noisereduction circuitry to ensure a qualitysignal.

4.5 MHz AND 41.25 MHz OUTPUTSTANDARDThe CMTS encoder generates a linear,non-filtered composite spectrum foroptimum stereo separation withoutrequir ing phase adjustment. Thisencoder/modulator transforms basebandstereo and SAP input (optional plug-inmodule) into BTSC multichannel soundwhich is then modulated to both a 4.5MHz subcarrier output and a 41.25 MHzIF output.

The integral precision 4.5 MHz crystalphase locked voltage-to-frequencyconverter included in the CMTS encoderprovides unmatched l inearity andminimum phase noise while the 41.25MHz crystal upconverter is provided forinterfacing with non-stereo compatiblemodulators.

DESIGNED TO FIT IN TIGHT SPACESThe CMTS is a rack-mounted unit with a1.75 inch high chassis, enabling theoperator to easily locate the unit even inmost space-restricted configurations. Itprovides front panel access to all audioinput level controls and includes bargraph indicators on the front panel for

left, right and SAP channels. The bargraph indicators provide a true peakdeviation metering of incoming audiosignals, helping ensure that subscribersare receiving a high quality audio signal. In addition, the CMTS encoder includesautomatic non-clipping over-modulationprotection on all channels; a video lockindicator; and offers remote-controllableA/B input for automatic commercialinsertion.

The CMTS encoder provides a cost-effective solution to stereo transmission incable systems.

Easy set-up and operation; no specificapplication “tweaking” required

13 and 17 launch powersincrease system design flexibility

Low noise, telecom proven reliable technology

Automatic output power compensationincreases system reliability (dual pumpOA model)

APPLICATION OVERVIEW:The MegaStar 1550 nm products aredesigned to complement

1310 and 1550 nm platform, providing the most cost-effective networksolution to both transport and distributionapplications. The MegaStar 1550 nmproduct family is ideally suited for appli-cations that exceed the limitations of 13 10nm products such as to Hubinterconnect (point-to-point or point tomulti-point), long-haul and redundant ringarchitectures. MegaStar optical ampli-fiers are used as launch amplifiers or line amplifiers to repeat the optical signalwith minimal performance degradation. The high optical output power can also besplit for the distribution of signals inbroadcast applications. If no narrowcastservices are required, the broadcast sig-nals can be optically amplified at the hubsite and directly transmitted to the node.In consolidation applications, broadcast analog signals are transportedfrom one central facility to other

or hub sites in a metropolitan/regional network. The broadcast signalscan then be combined with local origina-tion and target service signals at the huband then transmitted to the node using13 10 nm DFB technology.

SWITCHING BETWEEN PRIMARYOR SECONDARY SOURCES

l ADJUSTABLE SWITCHINGTHRESHOLD

l CONSTANT MONITORING OFBOTH PORTS

l LOCAL OR REMOTE CONTROLUSING SOFTWARE

l EXTERNAL CONNECTIONS TOSWITCH BETWEEN CHASSIS

l FRONT PANEL PLUG-IN MODULEWITH PLUG-N-PLAY OPERATION

INTRODUCTIONThe AM-OMNI-SWITCH provides auto-matic switching between the primary andsecondary signal sources during the lossor degradation of the primary signal foreither the forward or return path. Constantmonitoring of both inputs allows forinstantaneous switching in case of prima-ry input failure. Three independent modesof operation allow switching for any styleof fiber receiver. Automatic ormanual switching is possible either by thefront panel or by remote control using

Control Software.

APPLICATIONIn a typical application, redundant fiberpaths are fed to a hub location where they

are optically received and converted to RFand applied to the AM-OMNI-SWITCH.RF detection mode is used when constantRF needs to be monitored. For heavydata monitoring where RF is not alwaysconstant such as in upconversion or net services the digital control mode oroptical detection mode will monitor theoptical path. Any mode will switchbetween primary and secondary if the sig-nal level changes by -6 or by anyselected threshold using software. The first is the RF detection mode, theAM-OMNT-SWITCH will switch betweenRF in “A” and “B” on the rear panel andcan be fed by any RF source. The secondmode is the Digital Control mode inwhich the unit changes between the primary

or secondary mode depending on a level voltage out of the AM-OMNI-BCR or the AM-OMNI-

The third mode is the OpticalDetection Mode, similar to the digitalcontrol mode a front panel jumper from theoptical received test point on any olderstyle receiver such as the AM-OMNI-

and the AM-750RSHE to the opticalpower input on the AM-OMNI-SWITCH.

FROM A 4.5 MHz OR BASEBANDSOURCE

The Modulating Video Processor II(MVP-IT) is a feature and performanceenhanced version of the original MVPscrambler. The MVP-II can be used for allSTARCOM pay and addressab leterminal/descramblers by emulating anyprevious NextLevel encoder.

The MVP-II is designed to allow incrcascdflexibility in installation and more standardoperating modes primarily in the areas ofcompatibility and signal security.

EASY INSTALLATION

There are four user adjustments on theMVP-II: composite IF and sound IFlevels, and video modulation and audiodeviation adjustments.

A user reference card is provided, locatedon the top cover, in addition to theoperation manual, to help make the taskof selecting the optimum operating modean easy one.

EASY TO USE

Along with the standard remote controlinterface the front and rear panel switches

and display have been improved toprovide operational information quicklyand easily.

Set up options can be selected either at therear panel or through an access door onthe top cover.

An accessory package is included witheach MVP that provides spare lugs for theterminal block as well as extra screws.

STEREO COMPATIBLE

The MVP-II provides two stereointerfaces: 4.5 MHz and compositebaseband. The desired interface is chosenvia a switch on the rear panel and a StereoLED on the front panel indicates wheneither mode is selected.

REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION

ACC-2000, 4000 or the MVP-II can beremotely controlled from all NLSaddressable controllers.

OPERATING MODES

There are three basic operating modes inthe MVP-II: RF, BASEBAND, andMIXED. In the RF mode, the MVP-IIscrambles the video signal by suppressingthe sync information. Timing and Datainformation are amplitude modulated(AM) on the sound carrier. Whenemulating a DS/E several multi-modescrambling algorithms can be employedto provide enhanced signal security. In theBASEBAND mode, all the features ofDS/E mode are available plus several

baseband video inversion modes as wellas audio privacy. The Baseband modeuses an in-band data scheme that isMULTIPORT compatible and does notrequire AM modulating on the soundcarrier. The MIXED mode is used whenboth RF and baseband type terminalsreside in the same system. Both dataormats are transmitted and the operatingmodes are limited to the various syncsuppression modes which are compatiblewith both terminal types.

Hamlin and Eagle emulation modes areboth standard on all MVP’s.

SECURITY MODESThe MVP-II offers many enhancedsecurity features. Please contact yourNextLevel account execut ive forinformation on enhanced security modesof operation.

MVP-II: PRODUCT RANGE

The Model MVP II- DIU is a MVP IIencoder that includes a data inserter unit(DIU) option board. This option providesthe capability of carrying row teletext datain video channels. These data channelsare carried on two horizontal lines duringthe vertical blanking interval (VBI) on thevideo signal.

The MVPII-WLC provides compatabilitywith Scientific Atlanta’s scramblingmodes and is used in conjunction with aScientific Atlanta encoder.
