Season Outlook Cautiously optimistic are the two words that head women’s tennis coach Nancy Harris used to describe her 10th Clemson team. With a squad that will feature just three upperclassmen, two sophomores and five freshmen, she is excited about the talent her players display and the depth they bring. However, Harris also understands the unpredictability that comes with an extremely young team, as well as the phrase, “building for the future.” “We have wonderful talent and very good people to work with,” she said, “but we also realize the tremendous challenge.” She coaches her teams to play aggressively, a style that takes time to de-velop, and will spend much of the preseason laying the foundation with each player. “Right now, my challenge is to hold the girls back and work more with their ground strokes and returning serves, as well as with their own serves,” she said. “We are aggressive baseliners, all-court players and that takes longer to develop.” The fall season gave Harris and her coaching staff, which includes as-sistant coach Darrell Jernigan and volunteer coach Alix Lacelarie, a chance to observe the talent of her newcomers and to work individually with each player. They were pleasantly surprised by the rookies’ performances. Selma Babic won her first-round match-up at the Furman Fall Classic in September and then defeated a veteran Duke player in October’s Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional. “Selma is a superb athlete and has great potential,” commented Harris. “I think she is really going to be a superstar down the road.” As she becomes more consistent off the ground, Babic is going to be a force to be reckoned with. She has only just begun to tap into her potential as a player. Also hailing from Bosnia is stellar recruit Ina Hadziselimovic. Hadziseli-movic was the number-one ranked player in Bosnia last year and was recog-nized as one of the top junior players in the world. Harris believes she will continue that success at Clemson. “Ina is beyond her years in terms of understanding the game. Rare is it that you have a freshman who really understands court position and shot selection, and she

does. She sees the court and reads her opponents well.” Ani Mijacika, another highly touted recruit, showed great potential in just two tournaments last fall. The 5’10” native of Makarska, Croatia took the nation’s 17th-ranked player to two tiebreakers in her opening-round match in the flight one bracket at the Furman Fall Classic. She then reached the quarterfinals of the Southeast Regional before falling to the eventual cham-pion. Mijacika defeated two seeded players during her run. She was one of two Clemson players to reach the final eight of the South-east Regional, a claim no other team can make. Junior Carol Salge joined her in the quarterfinals to continue her out-standing play from a season ago. The San Roque, Brazil native earned a bid to the NCAA Singles Tournament in 2006 and was Clemson’s only All-ACC hon-oree. She took over the team’s top position late in the year and posted four wins in six decisions at flight one. The two losses were to the nation’s number one and number six ranked players, while three of her victories were over players ranked in the top 60. With a 24-10 overall record last year, Salge finished the season ranked 63rd in the Fila/ITA Tennis poll, and she jumped to the #45 position in this year’s preseason singles rankings. As one of only two players with multiple years of experience at Clemson, Harris will look for Salge to play a leadership role this year. “Carol is one of the top players in the nation,” Harris said. “She has tremen-dous desire and I think that she will have a professional career ahead of her.” She expects Salge to resume her position at the top of the lineup this season and to have another successful year. Harris will also rely heavily on Maria Brito to provide leadership for such a young team, but it is a role she feels her lone senior will perform brilliantly. “We may have just one senior, but Maru takes the place of two or three in terms of her leadership,” Harris said. “She has always set an incredible ex-ample for her teammates and is the definition of a team player. She has been a great champion for this team.” In testimony to the remarkable career Brito has had at Clemson, she en-ters her final season just two doubles wins and one three-set victory away from the top 10 of the Tiger record books. She has won 78 career doubles matches and has posted 20-win seasons in singles action in all three years. The Tigers’ final upperclassman is junior Kathryn Gerber, a native of Vienna, WV. Gerber arrived at Clemson last year as a walk-on, but earned a scholarship after demonstrating an exemplary work ethic. She played in 29 singles matches last year, mainly at the flights five and six positions. “Kathi made a huge improvement last year,” Harris said. “Her biggest chal-lenge is to continue to climb as she did last year with her strong academic demand being pre-dentistry.” The two sophomores on this year’s team had their fall seasons hindered by injuries and illnesses, but Harris expects them to have fully recovered by the start of the spring season. Federica van Adrichem played in just one match in the fall after an ex-tremely successful freshman campaign. She was ranked 55th in the final singles poll last year after posting a 22-15 overall record. She was selected to participate in the NCAA Singles Championships and advanced to the second round of the tournament. Van Adrichem, who hails from The Netherlands, was also named to the inaugural All-ACC Academic team in 2006. “Federica is an incredible talent and had a fantastic season last year,” ex-claimed Harris. “I really anticipate that she is going to do the same thing this coming spring.” Alexandra Luc also showed signs of a promising future as a Tiger. A na-tive of Paris, France, she entered Clemson last January and compiled a 16-7 record in the spring season. Luc also won nine of 11 matches against ACC com-petition last year. “Alexandra is a very talented player,” Harris said. “She is still very young, but I think we will see her develop into a great player.” Adding to an already strong class, freshman Estefania Balda enrolled in school this January and will begin competition this spring. Balda has had much success in International Tennis Federation competition, winning mul-tiple doubles titles and claiming one singles championship. “We are so thrilled that Estefania chose to be a Tiger,” Harris said. “She

Maria Brito, a two-time All-ACC honoree, is the only senior on this year’s team.

follows a great tratition of champions who have played for Clemson and I am truly excited about the contribution she will make to the 2007 team.” The final member of the 2006-07 team is freshman Samantha Eppelsheimer. She is a walk-on from Mt. Pleasant, SC who led Wando High School to state championships in 2004 and 2005. “Samantha has been a great surprise to me,” said Harris. “She has demonstrated that she can really compete, and her work ethic and attitude are just tremendous.” With such a deep, talented and young team, expect an ever-changing line-up for the spring season. However, the players will have little time to adjust thanks to the demanding schedule awaiting them. Harris has put together another challenging slate for her team that she hopes will prime the Tigers to again compete on the nation-al stage. “If you want to be successful at the national championship, you have to do the things during the season to prepare you,” Harris stressed. “Every match will be a challenge, but we have spaced it out to give ourselves breaks in between.” Highlighting the non-conference schedule will be Clemson’s trip to the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February. The Tigers earned an invitation to compete against 15 of the nation’s top teams. The annual event will again be held in Madison, WI and hosted by the University of Wisconsin. In other non-conference action, Clemson will play two matches against top-25 teams from last season, in Virginia Commonwealth and Georgia. The Tigers also have contests scheduled against South Florida and in-state rival South Carolina, who were ranked 37th and 41st, respectively, last year. Clemson will face the College of Charleston and Troy University as well this season. The ACC is arguably the strongest conference in the nation with seven of its 12 member schools ranked in the top 25 of the final poll last season. That caliber of competition will test the Tigers in every match. “We are so proud to be in the ACC because it continues to grow stronger,” Harris said. “It is an extremely demanding and very tough league.” A part of Harris’ job this season will be to re-lieve the pressure from her players of competing in such a difficult conference and in a program with such high expectations. However, she also anticipates that they will rise to the challenge and have an opportunity to contend for a national ti-tle. “I couldn’t be more delighted with this group of athletes,” concluded Harris. “I think that we are in for a very exciting year.”

Carol Salge (right) played six matches at the number one singles position last year

and was selected to the All-ACC team.

Hoke Sloan Tennis Center The Clemson women’s tennis team makes its home at the Hoke A. Sloan Tennis Center located in the center of Clemson’s ever-growing campus. This modern and well-equipped facil-ity was originally made possible by the donation of long-time Clemson resident and former Tiger Coach A. Hoke Sloan. A modern tennis center, completed in February 1993, is in the center of the Hoke Sloan Tennis complex. The $450,000 structure consists of two levels, and is one of the finest of its kind in collegiate tennis. The center consists of 3,500 square feet. On the lower lever, there are two separate locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s varsity teams. A training room is located in each of the locker rooms. Also on the lower level is a spacious lobby/trophy and memorabilia room. The coaches’ offices for both the men’s and women’s teams are located on the upper level. Also on the second floor is an open area with a deck allowing for an unobstructed view of the six main varsity courts. Surrounding the tennis building are 21 laykold-surfaced outdoor courts. A 700-seat permanent stadium, completed in the spring of 1985, overlooks six of the courts for varsity competition. The addition of seat-back chairs, which replaced standard bleachers in the fall of 2006, will give fans a much more comfortable and enjoyable experience when watching Clemson tennis. Tennis is a year-round sport at Tigertown, thanks to the mild-winter temperatures. However, on occasion, inclement weather does force the Tiger netters inside, and when this happens, the Tigers can take advantage of a four-court indoor facility located adjacent to the Sloan Tennis Center.
