What drives me to want every fleet to be the safest on the road and every member of that fleet to be a

better driver today than they were yesterday?

As a forensic collision investigator employed in one of the busiest police forces in the UK, I attended somewhere in the region of 1000 serious and fatal road traffic collisions.

Almost a third of those incidents involved people that were at work and in every one of those cases, those people left their homes in the morning and were absolutely entitled to return home safely to their loved ones that evening.

Not all of the people involved were drivers or passengers in vehicles – many were pedestrians going about their day-to-day business and again entitled to return home safely at the end of their working day.

I know that this makes difficult reading and that most people believe that they will never be in this position. The harsh reality however is, that on any given day at any given time, it could well be you or one of your employees that is involved in a similar situation.

Having appeared as an expert witness in courts of all jurisdictions, I am acutely aware of the importance placed upon Health & Safety. The penalties for offending in this area of law are rightly harsh.

Remember, 97% of collisions are NOT ACCIDENTS – they are preventable and will have been caused by human error or some other negligent act. Someone, somewhere made a mistake or an error of judgment.

The challenge, on a daily basis is to pre-empt the areas in which errors may be made and put rigid preventative measures in place.
