    AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

    and unintended consequences of behavior

    3) To identify and apply those techniques of

behavior management that are most likely to

lead to the intended consequences and

outcomes that are conducive to student

    learning

    CONSEQUENCES OF BEHAVIOR

    All behavior has consequences

Some consequences are obvious while others

    are subtle

In some cases, outcomes bear no similarity to

that which we intended (e.g. the teacher shouts

to keep the noise level down, which only serves

to excite the students further and raise the

    noise level of the classroom.)

    CONSEQUENCES OF BEHAVIOR

A knowledge of group psychology is important

In order to ensure that intended outcomes are

achieved, the teacher should at all times model

the types of behaviors he/she wants to develop

You must be thechange you want tosee in the world

    CONSEQUENCES OF BEHAVIOR

    Children must learn that dysfunctional

behaviors will lead to disciplinary consequences

Teachers can help students to learn the natural

consequences of their behaviors e.g. if a task isnot completed during class-time, they may have

to use their recess to complete it

Detention can be used as an opportunity to

    complete unfinished assignments

Can you think of some other examples?

    CONSEQUENCES OF BEHAVIOR

    Things to remember

At all times, consequences and restitutions

should be relayed to students in a respectful

    and calm manner.

Refrain from dramatic displays of anger and

attempts to humiliate the student publicly.

When the student has complied with theteachers requirements, there should be no

    further reference to the issue.

Remember..a little forgiveness makes life a lot morebearable, doesnt it?

    STUDENT-TEACHER INTERACTIONS

    Correcting student misbehavior is mandatory.

Give all corrections in close proximity, with eyecontact and a quiet but firm voice.

    Give corrections immediately following the

disruptive behavior. Corrective statements must emphasise the

positive intended outcomes e.g. you need tostoptalking instead ofyou are too noisy.

Learn to provide positive feedback whenstudents respond appropriately. (well done!,

    good response! etc)
