REPORT fROUND RANDOLPH

Dear Readers,

Thank you so much for your kind comments on our first issue of the

Journal. We also appreciate your excellent suggestions. You will notice

we are using some of them and will incorporate more of them later. Please

continue to comment and suggest anything you think would improve the pub

lication. Don't forget we also welcome contributions in the form of old

letters, genealogical data, Bible records, etc.

The picnic on a hot July day was attended by around thirty persons. Dr.

and Mrs. John Scott DAVENPORT from Lexington, Virginia, came the greatest

distance to attend. The children enjoyed the facilities of the park while

their parents used the afternoon for fellowship and exchange. We will be

looking forward to an even larger crowd next year.

We are pleased with the membership growth of the Randolph County Genea

logical Society. We hope the raise in dues to $8.00 will not cut down on the membership. The raise was a necessity, what with the price of materials

going up, and our hopes for more than a semi-annual publication. The

charter members are listed following the Index.

You will find your copy of the By- Laws as an insert in this issue. Do

read your By-Laws, as well as the policies set forth inside the front cover

of the Journal. They will answer many questions you will need to know

about the organization and the publication.

Our original printing of the first Journal is a complete sell-out. We

are having some additional copies printed for the many requests we are

still receiving for the first issue. Be patient, since we cannot premise

exactly when they will be off the press. Copies will be mailed out as

soon as possible.

BUSBY'S BITS OF BASICS

FOR BEGINNING GENEALOGISTS

By

L. Delano and Darlene T. Busby

AN HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL APPROACH TO RESEARCH

To the genealogist, one of the most rewarding aspects of research is

the history, geography and topography of the ancestors residence. By over

looking this important approach, you will deprive yourself of a rewarding

experience and a knowledge of the setting, stories and feeling of the period

which gave your ancestor life. When properly used, the researcher can save

both time and money and may, indeed, find the very key to his genealogical

puzzle. Far too many pass by excellent sources because of a failure to

realize or recognize the sources that exist in a locality.

HISTORY: History is events. Genealogy is people who make events. It is

out of history that genealogy emerges. It is essential that a genealogist

familiarize himself with the history of the county or parish. You. should

find which authorities or jurisdictions kept records and when they began.

Some may be peculiar to the area such as the "land lotteries" and "poor

and common school" records of Georgia. You should discover the migrational

trends. What stimulated people to move to new areas. The best sources of

such information are usually the local histories which tell why, how and when

people settled and often from whence they came. These local histories should

be checked before getting into actual research and resurveyed further into

the research. You will find churches, schools, occupations, military action,

courts and many others which produced records. If you already have a love

and appreciation for history, you are on your way to becoming a good genealogist.

GEOGRAPHY: Closely related to history, geography records boundary changes

which frequently account for apparent discrepancies and contradictions. A

town or parish close to a state or county boundary may be associated with one

state or county in one record and with a nearby state or county in other

records. Boundary disputes and changes between counties, states and countries

were common in earlier times and even as late as 1963, Georgia claimed a

lucrative mining area in Tennessee saying they were cheated in an 1817 land

survey which determined their borders. As boundaries change or counties get

smaller, county seats change and records are kept in different places. A

family living in a part of N, C. that was in Orange Co. in l?60 whould be in

Guilford Co. in 1771 and in Randolph in 1779. This is not as isolated example.

Note that South Carolina grew from very few to many counties in a relatively

short period. Further examples: Do you know when the State of Franklin was

created? What was its capitol? What were the counties and county seats?

How long did it exist? Where are its records today? Would they involve your

ancestors? Do you know why some Kentucky and Ohio land records are in Virginia?

Would these answer some of your genealogical queries? Would knowing that

Maine records prior to 1820 were kept in Mass, be of value to you? A genealo

gist needs to know the geography at the time of the ancestory residence to know which authorities kept records.

Page 6: GENEALOGICAL JOURNAL · 2020. 2. 1. · 1. Bolivar and Memphis Trail 2. Chickasaw Trail 3. Lower Harpeth Trail k. Great South Trail 5. Black Fox Trail 6. The Cisca and St. Augustine

TOPOGRAPHY: Topographical features had great bearing on ancestral movements

and on what and where records were kept. Towns may be close together geogra

phically, but a topographical feature such as a mountain, lake, river, swamp,

canyon, etc, might cause your ancestor to travel to a more distant town to

sell his produce, find his bride, christen his children, and record his land.

In the U. S., the mountain ranges run from north to south, while the migrations

or movements were from east to west. Study a topographical map showing moun

tain ranges and water courses. People followed the flat land along the rivers

and the rivers themselves, detouring around mountain ranges. Such a study can

make clear the routes used by those migrating from the Pennsylvania area into

the piedmont of Virginia and North Carolina. (See map insert)

History and geography, national and local, are essential studies in a

complete and thorough research program. Genealogy is more than a study of

names, dates, places and relationships. An awareness of the conditions under

which our ancestors lived brings them closer to us. We hope your interest and

imagination have been kindled and that you will expand on this short "bit" on

the value of the knowledge and use of history, geography, and topography in

determining which authorities or jurisdictions produced records concerning

your ancestors.

The map insert with its list of principal emigrant trails east of the

Mississippi River on page 5 is one prepared as accurately as possible from

earliest maps on file in Washington, D, C.

It accompanied Marcus LEWIS'S The Development of Early Emigrant Trails,

which in summary gave the historical and geographical reasons for the

trails which our ancestors followed, as the Indians had before them, the

original ones blazed by the wild animals of the region as they searched for

survival in the wilderness.

The detailed article, dated 1932, of over ten pages, also contains

descriptions and explanations of many of the trails and traces relevant to

migrations to North Carolina and Randolph County. A copy will be available

to members of the Randolph County Genealogical Society upon request, along

with a postage fee of 25<£ to cover the cost of mailing.

The editor heartily recommends the addition of this article to libraries

of serious genealogists.

Copied from Alexander's Math Book.

These family records came from the fly leaf of an old math book now

in the possession of Jay L. McGILL, Howard's Court, Apartment 3. Route 5,

State Park Road, Greenville, S. C.

The book came to him from his grandfather, Everett Jay MURDOCK, he

having received it from Nancy MURDOCK YORK. Nancy lived in Randolph County

until her husband's death when she moved to Noble County, Oklahoma to live

with Lindsay MURDOCK.

The mother of all these Murdock children was Sarah FARLOW with the

exception of William Lewis MURDOCK, who was adopted in 1867.

Can anyone help Mr. McGILL find out who William Lewis MURDOCK's

parents were or why he was adopted by this family?

ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT FOR BUILDING A CHURCH AT RICHLANDS

This is a copy of a paper loaned by Robert Bender KIME, Sr, It was writ

ten by Henry KIME, who was his great grandfather. One side of the paper has

a part torn away. The missing parts are contained within parentheses. The

obvious names or words have been filled in. There is no way of knowing whether

the subscriptions marked paid are the only ones paid or whether they are the

ones who paid as they signed their names to the document. It is unfortunate

that the sentence which told the sum needed before beginning the construction

was on the part torn away. On another scrap of paper are the rough figuring^:

The Evangelical Lutheran congregation, called Richlands, at a meeting held

on the l^th day of July I8U9 resolved, in reliance on Divine Providence to erect a new Meeting House, the right and title whereof to belong to said congregation

which (has) always been in connection with the Lutheran church in this state.

Believing it to be the very genius of Christianity to cherish a spirit of

fraternal friendship and love, we would not wish to exclude ministers of good

standing in other protestant denominations from the privilege of preaching occa-

ssionally when the pulpit is not occupied by the regular pastor; or funerals at

the request of their friends and by permission of the council of said congregation.

The building is to be a wooden frame and wheatherboarded and ceiled; its

dimensions 12 feet high; 35 feet wide and 55 feet long.

The expenses of erecting the above building are to be defrayed partly by

the balance of money on hand which accrued from the (sale of) a portion of the

church land for the purpose of enclosing the bur(ial) ground; and partly by

subscription. Whenever the subscrip(tions) and the balance of money referred to

shall amount to the su(m of ) the commissioners hereafter appointed shall p(roceed to) build the church.

Subscribers are to have the preference to all others in fu(rnishing) requisite

materials at the rates and prices fixed by the ( ).

The commissioners, or persons chosen to solicit and re(ceive the) subscrip

tions , donations &c, on behalf of the congregation shall) make all necessary

arrangements to erect the above buil(ding ).

We now appeal to all the members (of) the congregation; we ask (not only) Lutherans; we ask all the friends of religion who feel inter(est in) the prosperity

of the kingdom of Christ to aid up by your prayer, your labours, and by your

pecuniary contributions. "The Lord loves a cheerful giver." Let each one say:

"The glory of this latter house shall be greater than the former;" and the Lord will prosper the work; he will accept of the temple with the richest demonstrations

of his mercy and the outpouring of his Spirit.

Richland Lutheran Church is located-on S R 2^18 about four miles from

Liberty near the Guilford County line. The Church itself has been inactive since

1950, but the building erected by the specifications stated on page 9 still stands

guard over the old graveyard across the road. The cemetery is kept through funds

set up by the late Edna STALEY KIRBVLAN for that purpose. A cemetery reading will

be printed in a later issue of the Journal*

GRANVILLE LAND GRANTS

by

Barbara N. GRIGG, Carolyn N. HAGER, and Francine H. SWAIM

In 1663 King Charles of England granted colonial territory between the 31st

and 36th parallel from sea to sea to the Earl of CLARENDEN, the Duke of ALBEMARLE,

and six other favorites, among them Lord CARTERET, afterward the Earl of GRANVILLE.

When the land was reclaimed through an act of Parliament in 1729, GRANVILLE refused

to sell, and his one eighth share of Carolina was laid off and known as the Gran-

ville District.* The part of the state later to become Randolph County lay in

that district. The piedmont section of North Carolina was not settled to any ex

tent before this time, with the greatest influx about the mid 1700!s, so these

grants will show some of our earliest settlers. The state granted all land grants

after the Revolutionary War.

Only the names, counties, and dates of the Granville Grants are listed below.

They were taken from the card index files in the State Land Grant Office, and the

files in the Archives Search Room. The cards in the Land Grant office had no land

marks given, only the names of the counties. Randolph was then either Rowan, cut

from Anson, or Orange, formed from Granville, Johnston, and Bladen counties. When

persons names were repeated on Search Room cards with landmarks far removed from

Randolph, they are not listed. Some grants are listed that are not in either file.

They are the ones found in deeds, wills, (as Peter KIVETT's) etc. found mostly

through the research of Barbara N. GRIGG.

SHILOH CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Located in southeastern Randolph County on State Road 2895 near Erect, NC

Compiled by Carolyn N. Hager

Note; This is a compilation of the church members as listed in the church

record book. The record book states the church was organized Dec. 11,

18^3. This was not the first record book. There were three lists of

members. These lists were dated l88l; undated but approximately 1889 or

1890; and 1902. Each list deleted names of people who had died or

moved away since the previous list. Listed here are the names from the

first two lists only and separated by a line to show those names on the

second list that did not appear on the first list. If the name appeared

on List 2, it is marked *; if the name appeared on List 3, it is marked #.

All notations, such as married names added later for the women, have

been added after the name.

The cemetery records were compiled for all who died prior to 1920.

Since death certificates were supposed to be issued after 1913, we felt

the cut-off date of 1920 would include those who did not have a death

certificate. Where possible, these tombstone records are listed after

the church member's name. At the end of the church member list we have

listed the cemetery records of persons who died before l88l or who were

not on the church roll. The picture at the end is of persons attending

the school run by the church. (t,=tombstone; b.=born; d.=died; y-year,

SHILOH ACADEMY

Little is known of when Shiloh Academy, operated by the Shiloh Christian

Church, was opened. The only notation about it is found in Stokes and Scott,

A History of the Christian Church In The South, Elon College, 1973. It states,

"About 1856 (John R,) Holt retired as principal and returned to Chatham County where he taught at New Hope Academy until 1866 when he moved to Randolph

County and taught in Shiloh Academy until his death March 22, 1871." From the

foregoing, Shiloh Academy must have been started about 1866. The Shiloh

Academy building was erected about 1885, according to the late Dr. R. L.

Caveness of Coleridge. In 1977, the school building was moved to a new site

and is to be restored. The building originally was erected in the church

yard. Mr. E. C. Beane stated in an article in the Greensboro Daily News,

"Commencement was a big day. Everybody gathered there; the whole hill was

covered. They usually had a good speaker and the people really enjoyed it.

We'd have a big brush arbor there, just likef?a camp meeting. They had lemonade

stands, and ice cream made in hand freezers,"
